Im a little surprised how similar the graphics look. They still look bad, just slightly less so.

Mass Effect conversation wheel and Paragon / Renegade conversation choices.

Great.

Fuck you, Bioware.

I think you've mixed your dates up, the original Mass Effect came out in Nov 2007, ME2 was Jan 2010, that's 2 1/4 years. I find it's odd that we haven't seen any gameplay footage and when I pose the question it seems unimportant... conspiricy? "
That I did, I read it was Nov 2008.  I was probably thinking about some other franchise that had a quick sequel and turned out pretty good.

But still, this is BioWare we're talking about. If there's one company I have blind faith in to make a good product, it's them.

EDIT: Left4Dead, thats what I was thinking of that had a quick sequel which had everybody up in arms about it being uncharacteristic of the studio. Had to go stare at my shelf for a bit to remember.

What the hell, this game looks so cartoony now.

Wait, one of the romance options is an innocent girl-next-door? Guess we know who everyone will romance then.

Going to wait for the reviews. I'm skeptical of this product and its merits.

Hmmm, their characters still look and sound rather shitty compared to what another part of Bioware has been doing with Mass Effect.

Honestly, it's quite funny that Bioware's other AAA RPG(ish) product is what really makes me notice the problems with the DA games. DA1 ended up bland and generic when it came to story, narrative, aesthetics, acting and general audio.

I really don't like the art in this. Looks way to anime for Dragon Quest.

And the artist clearly doesn't do it well.

I'm sure it will be great. The trailers for DA1 with the metal songs and such made it seem really stupid, but in the end it was great, and I bet DA2 will be great as well.

I've rarely seen a user base as split on an upcoming game as is the case for Dragon Age 2. I guess Dragon Age 1 is the other example I can think of and luckily that turned out quite well. The main reason for this is a major difference in the expectations of what an RPG should be.

I grew up on older RPGs in an age where the presentational aspects of games had not progressed as far as they have today. These games focused more on statistics and strategies as designers had to find ways to abstract those things that they could not display on-screen. This had the wonderful side-effect however of making these games an intellectual challenge. From moment to moment the player had to solve problems a typically mathematical nature to progress through the story and game. It was the resolution of these problems that provided me with the greatest sense of enjoyment. Finding novel ways of maximizing the skills of my characters and carrying as much loot as possible was a much bigger factor in my enjoyment of an older RPG than they way that the combat and story was represented. To summarize: Thinking was fun.

In the modern age presentation has caught up and the aspects of a grand adventure can be visualized and no abstraction via text or numbers is needed. This increases the spectacle of these games, but has the side-effect of requiring less thinking. If you grew up with this, this is your expectation of games and you would want the game to entertain you instead of you entertaining yourself by solving intellectual problems. Sorting your inventory and min-maxing statistics would therefore seem utterly tedious if your expectation is that of a minute to minute thrill ride. To summarize: Sparkles are fun.

Dragon Age 1 was a game that harkened back to the older type of RPG while introducing more of the spectacle that modern hardware allows. This effectively merged two very different user bases and has now seemingly placed the Bioware in a tough spot. The sequel can try to play the balancing game or head in one of these directions. The marketing makes it seem like the case is the latter, but I guess we'll only know when we play it.

I'm not sure whether I'll enjoy Dragon Age 2, but I'm sure it will be fun to see how people react to it come March.

I share Daves trepidation on this game. I mean, I loved Mass Effect 2 as much as anybody, but what i'm looking for here is a good old fashion Bioware RPG.

I'm starting to warm up to Dragon Age 2, but the fucking pre-order thing is retarded! It has left a very BAD after-taste.
I couldn't find a single LOCAL retailer that actually used this pre-order deal. Holland seems to have been left out. But they even went and left Steam out of the deal! Leaving me with no legitimate option to pre-order it...
The EA Store has a limit of a year to download a game purchased, and after that you need to jump through hoops (really? that's not how to get direct sales EA. Offer proper service or GTFO!). And I aint going to make an account on EVERY fucking digital platform there's out there.
Gah - I'll see if there's a reason to play it as soon as it's out. Otherwise I'll try an look at deals to get Dragon Age 2.

"
Check Steam, they just added it a few hours ago and it's getting it's own special version that has different DLC. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Pre-Purchase Offer

Pre-Purchase now to receive two special in-game items!

FADESHEAR (sword)

The core of this blade is old. As old as the first smiths who sought a way to battle the nightmares from the land beyond. It has fought the demonic hosts in countless battles. Sometimes it has been held high in triumphant victory. Other times, it has lain broken besides its dying owner. But after every defeat it has always been reclaimed, reforged, and made stronger. Fadeshear has passed through many hands before yours. Now it is your turn to make the demons of the Fade pay for crossing the Veil into the waking world.

  • Improves with each level-up
  • additional damage vs. demons and undead

THE LION OF ORLAIS (shield)

At the height of the Summer War all of Orlais was embroiled in fierce battles. Over the course of the war dozens of contenders for the Imperial Throne emerged – most long forgotten except as footnotes in scholarly tomes. But everyone remembers the gallant young lord Emile Deveraux, “The Golden Prince”. Thought outnumbered at every turn, he racked victory upon victory culminating in the Seventh Battle of Roses. While wearing this shield he broke through his uncle’s vanguard to win the day. He never knew the taste of defeat, instead meeting his end at the hands of a jealous lover in the dead of night.

  • 2 rune slots
  • Adds to health
  • Adds to % XP gain

Visit the Black Emporium today, and you’ll be the envy of adventurers everywhere. Your invitation awaits!

The Black Emporium features:
  • A magic item store that has some of the best equipment you’ll find in the game. It’s restocked with better items as you progress through the story.

I'm not concerned about the graphics at all. I'm worried that I will not like this method of story telling. It works in movies because you are being presented with a completely linear, non-pausing experience in a single sitting. On the other hand, I haven't played a Bioware game I didn't like, so we'll see.

Dragon Age II...

The question is why are they fixing things that are not broken?
The first DA sold rather well, some figures saying it sold more than Mass Effect 2...
Why change some of the crucial core gameplay wholesale rather than improving on the success?

Say what you will about the inventory, leveling system, and the mako, but saying the combat in Mass Effect 2 was weaker is moronic.

Please start up Mass Effect 1 again and look how everything works against everything with very little depth before you start shouting your ill-informed opinions.

They really need to update that engine or at least allow upscaling on the PC version. Other than that, it looks like it will be fun, though clichéd and mildly tedious. I think I will also forgo any DLC this time around, enough is enough...

I didn't say the combat was less complicated than the first. I said there wasn't a lot of depth there to begin with, which there isn't compared to a game like Dragon Age or Icewind Dale. Mass Effect is a shooter with RPG sprinkles on top. Read the post before you start shouting your ill-informed responses.

why does this game look worse than the first? not just the graphics, which i'm not fond of, but the character animations (conversations, etc.) are even stiffer than in the first game, and that's saying lots.

Parts of me want to play this... Parts of me dont, and part's of me NEED to upgrade my computer.

One thing with a game like this. I kind of wish it was more mature like The Witcher. Not for the bare chests or anything like that ( however in a romance scene..it looks odd for people to "get it on" with clothes on) but more or less for better expression. They did it with Mass effect 2. Made the game more meaningful when shit went down or people got hurt, you were not the only person cursing.

Here's hoping.
