Ed Boon on Mortal Kombat vs. DC

It's ironic Ed Boon seems like one of the nicest people in the industry while also being the co-creator of one of the most controversially violent series in the history of video games.

Justify Superman i nthis game all you want... Okay fine his "godlike" powers are limited by magic. But how is SHAZAM, (Captain Marvel for anyone who knows anything), in this game!? He is as strong if not stronger than Superman and he IS magic so there would be no limit to his power. He was a poor choice to put in here.

I feel the same way. The Giantbomb previews are incredible. The Age of Booty was the best though.

Is Tobias back with the MK Dev Team? John Tobias left the Mortal Kombat team in 1999, during the time that MK: Special Forces was being made.. He left because he thought the action-adventure MK spinoffs were stupid and was dissatisfied with how crappy the franchise had become. I know he's working on a comic book to be released with MKvsDCU, but I haven't heard anything abouty him being back on the dev team. I don't know why he'd want to come back on now when the franchise has been self-censored and sanitized/bastardized into a Teen rated game. Well, other than being hopeful for a fat paycheck.

And, yes, the Joker's fatality has been nerfed, as has Kitana's fatality.

Anyway, it's been changed up a bit, toned down to just slightly less than awesome to secure that highly coveted T-rating that Midway and Warner Bros. are so adamant about. In the latest build, Joker still whips out his prank gun, a "BANG!" flag unfurling. Unfortunately, you won't see the follow up of Joker shooting someone in the face; that actually happens off screen now, the headshot safely out of sight.

Another Fatality that's seen some revision was Kitana's, one that involved her opponent being impaled by her trademark blade-fans. Initially, the first fan went into the torso, the other into the forehead. That second was a T-rating no-no. Double fans delivered to the chest, however, that's a T-rated way to end someone's life.

I know it's snarky, but, since we no longer see the Joker shoot someone in the face, can we call it Mortal Kombat Lite?

Nice video explaining why they broke up the combat with the mini-games, but I really don't want mini-games in my fighting game. I see where he's going with the making transitions mean something instead of a static cinematic, but the arena transitions and the way they jarred you out of combat was what I hated about MK 3. Replacing it with a mini-game doesn't solve the problem for me. I thought the fluidity of the combo system in MK 5 was good, but it seemed cheap at times.

The bruising system sounds impressive and the ideology behind the mini-games is interesting, but I think I'll pass on this like I did with MK 3 & 4. Hopefully the devs will release another pure MK game, rated M, and get rid of these transition break-ups.

Keep up the good work Jeff. I see you as becoming the Roger Ebert of the video game world.

I, like many of you, first hated the idea of MK vs. DC but trying to hate the game got old fast after seeing the combat and the way the enthusiasm came through the devs. talking about the game. Will this be the greatest fighting game ever? No, but It will please both fans of the MK series and DC fans alike just due to the fact that their favorite superhero is being featured in a fighting game or because the combat is mixing up old school MK with a little bit of new and I for one cannot wait!

It is funny how it was a collective WTF when it was announced, i must say as time went on i started liking the idea and now im pretty excited for it.

Man.  If this game comes out and it sucks and you have to give it a bad review, it sure is going to be awkward between you two.

I really, really, really love your video features. Always interesting. Nice guy, this Ed Boon. Also, I'm a long time MK fan but, but only got a console before a few weeks. That means, I'm pretty psyced about this one, especially since the opinions on it have gotten better and better.

A little disappointed you guys didn't record any matches, I remember you playing Ed Boon in I think Armageddon back on GameSpot.

I've made up my mind, if Jeff gives this game 4 or 5 stars, I will purchase this game.

Thank Jeff and Ed Boon for the preview. I am now pretty much sold into getting this game into my collection. Ed, thanks again for the fan service and keeping true to your art in the most original fighting platform design. There is no fighting game compared to some of that good ole' fashion butt kicking, spine ripping and WTF moments in the "MORTAL KOMBAT" universe!!!! Keep on gaming you two.
