I think it looks fine. This redesign did get me thinking that they should go back to their roots and call the PS4 "The Playstation" and its a modern take of the first PSX. It should also be released worldwide on the Japanese 20th anniversary, 3 December 2014.

Sony should have just slapped a 80 or 120 GB HD and dropped the price to $199 and they could have thrown in some pre-installed PSN titles. (Like Flower or Journey, and maybe a PS3 title from a year or so ago)

Though, I think they are holding off to make the big price drop right around the time the next console comes out...

Also, I think more systems should have manual ways to open them. I hate not being able to get the game out if the thing breaks, or the power goes out.

Yeah, kinda crazy that they were so against the idea of a "cheap, low tech" top loader in the bombcast. I'm constantly scared that my current slim PS3 with the automatic slot-loaded drive will suddenly die on me with some irreplaceable disc still inside. I'm OK with tray loaded drives, as they aren't that hard to open even if the motor dies, but I absolutely prefer manual top loaders like the PS2 slim.

I don't care about the look, the size is cool and I bet it's quiet - but the top-loader downgrade? Nope. PS3 Middle 4life.

If you put it up vertically, the opening slides down gradually instead of the more abrupt opening as it sits horizontally.

I was hoping they would demo that.

I guess they just didn't think of it at the time, but at least now you kind of know right? If you go to IGN they do show that.

I'll wait for a sale I think. 200 for a ps3 sounds like the perfect number to convince myself to get one of these (or even the original slim) and finally play all those ps3 only games I have missed out on for this entire generation.

Makes me hope my old PS3 with the Blueray player replaced (expensive!) holds up Both situational(on the top tier of my wall mount component shelf right now), so top loading would be awkward. Also appearance, and nearness to next gen, relatively speaking. One thing has always confused me..how they disperse heat so much better than the 360...or generate less. No power brick to boot!

I have not turned it on in about a month and 1/2. Still I have the MGS HD collection in there, and desire to play Resistance 3...these things must happen. Should happen at least.

Edit- went to check the P-logo and found it at 45degrees....

Its so tiny! I bet they could have saved some money by just having an Uncharted 3 download code in the box. I would love to pick one of these up as I still don't have a PS3, but it feels waaay too late to buy a new old console.

Its crazy to think, though, that if it didn't have the internal power brick or the disc drive it would be about the size of a Wii at this point.

There are two things preventing me from upgrading from my original fat PS3, both equally important:

1) I'd lose PS2 backwards compatibility.

2) I'd lose a turning PS logo (also, I'm surprised people still don't know about the PS logo turning, especially people on the GB crew).

This is the dumbest redesign I've seen in a looong time. Tell me, dear Sony engineers, how the fuck am I supposed to access the disc drive when I put the PS3 in my entertainment center (which features very limited overhead room)? Not to mention that the thing if fucking ugly and looks cheaper than a Taiwanese hooker.

It does look cheaper, but it kinda reminds me of an old Atari or something. Nostalgic in a good way maybe? Lol and just sliding that door open and close looks like fun.

should be easy, as the lid doesn't pop up, it slides and takes no clearance.

I do prefer the design and matte finish of the first PS3 slim, but slightly lower price is good. And how much time does one really spend staring at a game console once it's placed on the shelf of an entertainment stand?

This. SO MUCH THIS.

Not only that, but the guys are totally right about games getting stuck in there. Both times I sent my launch PS3 to get fixed, a fuckin' game was stuck in there. Seriously thinking about that one next year, when they DO go "Hey, it's one-hundred ninety-nine US dollars!"

Not much magic to it, original PS3s actually generate a bit more heat than the 360 but they had a much better and correspondingly more costly heatsink design.

The original PS3's heatsink used 5 copper heatpipes - 3 on the CPU, 2 on the GPU - that connected to a single large, shrouded aluminum heatsink with a 160mm blower fan right in the middle ensuring a large amount of air movement across all the heatsink fins. This is roughly the same heatsink design used on high end video cards. 5 copper heatpipes = $$ which surely contributed to the PS3's debut price.

The slim PS3s (the 'old' slim and not this new one, which I don't know about) use pretty much the same blower design but get away with a single heatpipe because of processor size and power usage reductions.

The original 360 had a rather basic and small, single piece aluminum heatsink on the GPU and a separate single heatpipe heatsink on the CPU. These were cooled by two 60mm exhaust fans on the back of the case which relied on air in the case being "pulled" through the heatsink. In other words, the heatsinks were insufficient and there was less direct airflow over them. Later revisions (post red ring fiasco) added a heatpipe and secondary heatsink for the GPU, even after they reduced size and power usage on the processors.

Slim 360s get away with a basic (no heatpipe) single aluminum heatsink over both the CPU and GPU, but have a larger fan situated right over the heatsink for more direct airflow.

At first it didn't look that small till it was next to the PS3 slim and made it look huge by comparison. That thing has to be ridiculously small.
