Legacy of Kain Returns in Multiplayer Form With Nosgoth

My thoughts when I saw this video:

"Omigodomigodomigod! Wait, multiplayer? Please don't tell me this is a MOBA... Hmm, this looks nothing like Legacy of Kain. :/ OH WELL."

My only hope is that this could be at least a little bit interesting as an asymmetrical multiplayer game, like AvP. But again, like so often, doesn't look like it needs the franchise name at all. On the other hand, I would pay zero attention to this otherwise. So, it's obvious why they did it.

I hope this is what they meant when they said they were bringing the series back. I thought they said they were rebooting Soul Reaver, perhaps I heard wrong.

Where is the fantastic story telling and wonderfully fleshed out characters the Legacy of Kain series is known for? I'm sorry but this whole game looks like something that should have been a multiplayer mode tacked onto the side of a real Legacy of Kain game. I'm not only disappointed to see Crystal Dynamics let their franchise be muddied by this, but to presume that fans of a single player/story heavy adventure game would be into a team based shooter is pretty gross. Its certainly not going to appeal to new players so who is this even for?

Ill give it a go despite my misgivings but only because it has the vaguest hint of LOK about it, don't see it lasting more than a few days for me, has Gotham City Imposters written all over it.

Hey guys, remember when we took Shadowrun, a much loved and respected pen and paper RPG and beloved cult classic games and got rid of all that gay-ass shit like story, setting, RPG elements and fun! That was such a fucking smash hit that everyone loved so goddamn much, let's do it again with this Legacy of Kain thing I found in the attic!

What's it's history? Oh, I think it's some intricate 5 games series of detail plots and characters arcs that garnered a cult following from it's fantastic script and voice performance. Don't worry, we'll add great voice work too, like when you die, your go "AHHHHHHH" and when you kill someone, we'll put in the MP3 file of the laughing from Unreal Tournament!

Next up for unbelievable stupid idea for a multiplayer shooter: BALDUR'S GATE!!!!

I'll play it but I also played LoK 2, so that tells you when it comes to the series I'll play anything new...

@kagato: From what I understand, this originally was a multiplayer mode added to a to a singleplayer game. There's an in-depth thread on GAF about cancelled LoK games that includes some information about this title as well.

Wait, wait... I take everything back! They have some Legacy of Kain ASCII-art in the source code of their blog. These guys must be for real! :O

Seeing as LoK is a huge favorite of mine, I hope this at least leads to Blood Omen HD somehow.

Two things:

1. It's a little difficult to take the developers' praise of the game seriously when they don't even bother to put any emotion into it.
2. I'm gonna have to replay Soul Reaver, aren't I?

No wonder Blood Omen 2 was listed as a "New Release" on Steam yesterday.

I had read about the single player but didn't realise this was a component of that game....that's just sad, i hope they at least price it accordingly.

@humanity - wait it is? <runs off to buy it>...wonder if they will ever get around to releasing the original Blood Omen so i can play through from start to finish on PC. I have them all split up in a weird order, Blood Omen on PC, Soul Reaver on Dreamcast, Soul Reaver 2 on PS2, Blood Omen 2 on Gamecube and then Defiance back on PS2.

This just confuses me. I just don't see why they'd bother.

Like normally I would just think "Because money" but not even that works as an excuse here. They're taking a kinda niche franchise and carving away the part of it that said niche would want to return to.

Who is this for?

I'm haggard veteran of this series and I'm feeling some apathy toward this new game.

on one hand I'm disappointed we're not getting a single player game that continues the story of Kain as he tries to restore the ruined world he may or may not have created. I'm also surprised to see Razielim vampires in the trailer considering they were wiped out when Raziel was cast into the pit. I'm sure they'll explain it away with one line of dialog and expect us to accept it.

On the other hand this game looks kind of fun and the Nosgoth of the Soul Reaver 1 era hasn't been explored as deeply as other eras. The humans in SR1 were an odd edition to the game. They were allies or enemies depending on how you treated them. They made Nosgoth feel like a real place. It might be fun to take the role of a human in this world.

I'll play this but only if it will show Square there is still interest in the Legacy of Kain franchise.

This is just a god damn slap in the face! I played the entire series, I could pretty much speed run soul reaver 2 and I was pretty much a LoK timeline theorist. This is the worst possible way to bring back this IP....I mean was an HD collection too much like work Square Enix?

Look that that! Tons of visceral action, we can see the winged and brute vampires at work. And the graphics have obviously improved! I'm sure Nosgoth™ will deliver on all the pulse pounding excitement and fun of the original game!

what the hell did I just see...

I was so excited to just see Legacy of Kain in text again...and then I watched the video. It was like running up to Mickey Mouse at Disney World, only to have him stab my parents and take my shoes. I didn't want it like this...this isn't how it was supposed to happen. What kind of ass-backward-twisted-alternate-reality shit is this? Who asked for this? Did I win Twisted Metal or something? I guess I should stand by for the free-to-play tower defense game that will be Condemned 3. Or the next big kart racer: Half Life 3: Gordon's Run.

What did i just watch?
I mean sure.. a Legacy of Kain MMO could have it's charms, something that throws you right into the world.
But this does not look anything like that?!

This looks like just another arena Shooter that throws you into heavily instanced hubs between matches.
Even with their track record on multiplayer games (UT, Homefront, Gears, ME3) they need to show something way more interesting than a mere team deathmatch multiplayer, especially if it's F2P.

Until then i consider myself "unimpressed"..

For a franchise with such a rich history and fiction, being reduced to a free-to-play multiplayer game feels like a slap in the face. I really loved those games it's super disappointing that they'd build this type of competitive game when the fans have been barking like mad for a true follow-up. Nosgoth looks like a game prototyped for something else that has been awkwardly crammed into the LoK universe.

As always I will reserve final judgements for when the game is completed but seriously, this just seems ill-advised.

Will look into this out of curiosity but as a fan of the LoK series, hopefully they will see how the Elder Scrolls mmo will probably dive quickly into the abyss then they will make this into a single player RPG set in Nosgoth. At least with Elder Scrolls mmo it seems like it's been around for a while yet this seems like a newer decision by some people who should know better now about how unsuccessful mmos can be on the most part without any kind of legacy in that genre. Plus Square hasn't had the best of luck with mmos, so definitely not going to give this much hope on being average.

The game itself looks okay... but I can't abide by this horrible misuse of such a great series.

I consider my self a pretty level headed person and relies that all the people in this video are just folks that need to eat and pay the bills but this shit needs to die, NOW. I love the Kain series and bought every every single one at full prices with the exception of the first which i came late to.This pile of shit wreaks of the same failure of that garbarge shadow run FPS.

God please smash a meteor into were ever these people are woking at 3am. That would be so cool.

This is just branding at its worst.

And a flying vampire doesn't even make any fucking sense in the series lore whereby vampires evolve over time. Raziel emerging from his pupating state in SR1 with wings was significant because it was the first time a vampire had sprouted wings since the original Ancients several millennia prior, elevating him above even Kain. It's only the seminal fulcrum upon which the events of three goddamned games were set into motion.

The only other vampire to possess wings in the series was Janos Audron, the last surviving Ancient, and he would have been dead during this conflict anyway.

Some desperately concieved multiplayer only games come out DOA. But this one is looking straight up DBA.

i'll say it...Tony Jay would roll over in his grave at this...i love the Kain/Raziel games, but this trailer just makes me cringe.

Raziel is the awesomest...just walking around and gliding in Soul Reaver was such beauty, and his voice actor, Michael Bell, was top-notch as well.

It reminds of that Batman Impostors game - and that was pretty good.

I could not have said it better myself. I loved the heck out of all those games (except Blood Omen 2), and really don't like this idea. I'll check it out if there's a demo, but I'm not excited for this.

What happened to this franchise?

I would definitely just prefer a reboot of Soul Reaver or a an HD remake.
