3 tries, normal difficulty.

So freaking stoked I went half holy/half unholy on this, the crosses maxed out saves your ass on this challenge.

Amazing.. at the start of the video Ryan turns a platform and has to jump off as it moves back to it's original position. I vividly remember doing exactly that on GoW2

I couldn't helpt but notice, like some of you here, that Ryan perhaps went into this game with the wrong mindset. Seeing as he really rely on a bit too much on the buttonmashing of this game and not taking advantage of the spells and other tactics which the game rely on you to use. Since I have not played this game I can't judge it myself, but I get the feeling this is like that dude who reviewed Mass Effect 1 without using his experience points to boost his skills, instead hoping shooting would solve everything.

But then again, the problem is perhaps that this game had not presented itself to Ryan at all, during the game (up to till this point), that you perhaps can't beat this game with just mashing buttons and only use holy crosses . And that's a design fault which Ryan can't be held guilty for. He was just playing the game how he thought it would be played.

Watching this is just brings back my memories of playing Ninja Gaiden, for the xbox, where I could be stuck on bossfights and even on some ordinary enemies because I just tried to beat them with share force. So it's kinda frusturating for me to watch this since it just reminds me of foolish you really seems to be when trying to beat a game by the wrong means and how easy it would be to tell Ryan "YOU PLAYING IT WRONG GODDAMIT, DO THIS AND THAT INSTEAD" because that's easy for me to say when I don't actually play the game.

I was so emotionally invested by the end of this video haha.  By the end I was like "C'mon, Ryan, c'mon, c'mon, AGHH!"

Edit:  Also, can someone who's played the game fill me in on what the dark powers are?  Ryan has filled out most of the tree for the left side, yet he doesn't seem to use any of it's powers.  What are they?

man i was so relieved when ryan finally beat it.  that was stressful even for a viewer. but seriously challenges like that should not exist in the main game. Thats why you usually see those kinda challenges in like "Challenge mode" or "arena mode" something like that. anyways seeing that was enough for me to justify not buying dante's inferno. let alone i probably wont ever play it especially with god of war 3 coming out so soon.

I kept expecting Jeff to mock Ryan; "You can't handle the truth!" and Ryan would respond by bitch slapping him with the 360 controller, thankfully he beat it and everyones friends. ^^

Kind of silly that you have to do specific challenges like this to progress through a game. Stuff like this only comes off as filler and should be something that is a bonus or something on the side rather then something to progress with.

Was actually kind of nice to see that we all have our frustrating moments in gaming, no matter how many games we've played or even if we make our living playing them.  Was also cool to get to be there for the moment of success - I shared the relief.

Who needs Sisyphus when there is a veritable Hell on Earth in the form of this?

Very entertaining yet painful watching though. The really stupid thing is that there is no in-game reason why you should fail or have to do this: It's simply lazy game design.

Part of me think this is horrifying to watch.

Part of me remembers I've wasted WAY too much time not having fun playing games in exactly this way.
eg.
- COD2,3,4 on Veteran
- Last boss in Guitar Hero III
- Last guitar song on Expert in Rock Band 1
- Getting stuck at 499 orbs in Crackdown

There's no Unholy equivalent of the ranged attack?  That seems like a pretty strange design choice.

Come ON, Ryan. I did this part on my first try. There are a lot of stupid and frustrating parts in this game, but this is definitely not one of them. I'm going to assume that you weren't even aware of the relic that increases the window for combos. And relying on a cross attack that you didn't upgrade at all probably wasn't a good idea either. I am in no way defending this game, because it's honestly not that good, but this part is simple shit.

Im surprised you had a hard time with this. All you had to do was activate redemption. Your knockback isnt that long (if it knocks you back at all which Im not even sure it does). You wouldve passed this in one go. This is the shortest challenge of all of them. I beat it on first try.

Ryan. You did miss a key part of the game. You are trying to go about it just using two attacks. Regular attack and the holy cross...the holy cross is just to string along the combo. You have a mana bar which was explained way earlier in the game, and you have magic powers to use by pressing L2 (or L1 maybe?) also you have a "Go crazy"-mode by hitting L1 and R1 which is blinking at you all through the video :)

I will admit some of these challenges were harder than they needed to be I managed to get by this one on my 3rd try. Between Vile Wind (the spin around in a circle move) and Holy Cross I was able to keep the hit counter going.

I did it on the hard setting in 1 shot. The easiest way that I found is just diving around the arena using cross attacks.

I enjoyed this game, except for this part.  I don't know why otherwise fun and solid games (IMO) throw challenge levels like this in out of nowhere.  Darksiders being another recent one.

The moment the developers started talking about repetitive arenas with different qualifications for passing each arena, I decided I was not going to get this game.  Why do developers have to do this bullshit?  It takes you out of the immersiveness and just annoys most people.

Did you even watch the video? He used the rage mode a ton, and he mentioned the magic stuff in the lower right corner. He just didn't feel it was necessary.

There are SO many things you can do that make this challenge a breeze, like literally no luck (nor skill) involved.

First and foremost, make sure you obtain the relic that adds window for your bonus time, when maxed out, it gives an ADDITIONAL 3 seconds to the regular window time.

Second thing I'd say is to have cross at level 3. It's on the holy tree on the very left of it, you looked at it for a split second and didn't seem to notice that you didn't have it, and I'm sure you had points for level 2 at least, that would've helped tons.

In general the holy tree has a lot of AOE and lots of control moves that knock even the larger enemies down and you can spam the combo that's done by holding block and spamming B (I think) that pulls everyone in towards you, knocks them into the air then slams them down.

If you don't go that deep into holy, you can just throw the relic that disallows interruption while spamming Holy/Cross attacks, and the extra combo time, and literally walk around the edges throwing crosses into the centre, no need to block, or roll or anything like that. With level 3 cross, the final "throw" has a HUGE knockback and damage.

Last but not least, I believe Jeff asked if the attacks were interchangeable. It took me a while to realise the combat system, but eventually I did. What you can do is something like, three cross attacks then hit Y and do the final heavy attack that breaks guards. Pretty sure it works to do three cross attacks then hit X for the three sixty knockback with scythe too, and this works vice versa; three scythe attacks, hit cross and it does the final "multi-cross" attack.

If only you knew this beforehand. :(

@Kovski:
That's an interesting observation,sir.

Ninja gaiden (XBOX) was a tough -as -nails game but it was fundamentally fair. The controls were so responsive that even if you made a mistake, it was possible to get Ryu out of any situation  and the boss fights were like a puzzle that required you to learn their attacks and patterns so that you could avoid damage and actually 'beat' them .( That said, Alma: You're a real bitch.)  Also , the more you played it ; the more you got better at it. I died about 15 times before i beat alma the first time and now having done it all, can beat her with pretty less damage on the first try. This Implies that a system was at least in place and once you learnt the rules, you could master it.

Here, Ryan seems to be struggling a lot with the dodge manuever  and it's not his fault. It's not sloppily designed but  requiring this kind of precision (what with the combo timer, etc.) for  system that is more about crowd control than anything else. (Since it borrows from God of war. I've always felt that DMC:Style, Ninja gaiden ;precision and patterns, God of war :Crowd control)  is simply unfair.

Well done then, Ryan and bravo for sharing this with us. Hope the review is up soon.

PS: Even after playing bayonetta,Dmc 4 and ninja gaiden 2. I still think the original XBOX ninja gaiden/black is the greatest game in the genre. The palpatable rush and the incredible sense of accomplishment remains unrivalled
