Swery! Yes!
I'm glad to see more of Swery, he seems like such a cool & interesting guy.

Here's hoping the Deadly Premonition Director's Cut will sell well enough for him to keep making games.  I still remember about a year ago when he was begging people to fund his new project... let's hope he doesn't get in that dire of straights again.
I'm still hoping for a Deadly Premonition 2.

Swell interview. I attempted to transcribe it for those having a hard time. There may be some mistakes, and there were a couple words I couldn't make out after several minutes, but the gist is there. Read along with the video.

RYAN: What is it that you wanted to accomplish with the director's cut?

SWERY: He released the original version of Deadly Premonition only for Xbox 360. But it was a pity that he could not deliver this fantastic game to PS3 owners. This time he had a chance from the producer to bring this game newly to the PS3 owners. He was so happy to have that kind of chance.

PATRICK: When you were thinking about what to put into the director's cut, how much of it was what you wanted to put into it, and how much of it was listening to fans and what you could address based on what they had played in the Xbox 360 version?

S: First of all, he didn't want to make a big change from the original version, but after the release of the 360 version, after feedback from the western market, some of them were very positive, from the core fans, and some of them were kind of negative comments. For example, graphics is not so good, or something like that. So first of all, he wanted to improve such kind of points when he decided to bring this director's cut. He decided to fix the controls because so many fans were complaining about it. So he decided after listening to the voices from the fans.

R: Were there any story or character elements that didn't make the 360 version that you wanted to incorporate that made it into the director's cut?

S: Also he decided to add a new scenario. In this new scenario, he brought a completely new character. But he didn't want to destroy the main story or the main original gameplay, so he decided to add the new story as a little cutscene. He decided to insert those cutscenes throughout the game. For those core fans who played the original version, they will be able to get a kind of a new translation after they watch the new scenario, because he added a new ending as well.

P: You have been very active on Twitter, Instagram, you interact with your fans a lot. What do you get out of that? Why do you like interacting with your fans so often? You seem to be one of the few Japanese developers that really dives in head first to talk to all of your fans on Twitter.

S: He likes to be close to the fans because sometimes he can recognize what is good, what is bad. He received a comment like, "I don't like the QTE of Deadly Premonition," so this time he decided to fix the QTE scenes so that the player can much more easily clear this game.

R:You've been living with Agent York and these characters and this world for a really long time now. Deadly Premonition in its various incarnations has been around for a while. Do you have any ideas moving forward in this universe, or after this are you looking to break completely from Deadly Premonition and jump into something new?

S: Of course he is thinking of various things. Maybe getting back to the (indistinct) or something, or jumping into the new titles. But at the moment he's thinking that everybody's pushing him to bring York to the next game. He is kind of enthusiastic to come back to the Deadly Premonition world. He'd like to get the chance to do that.

P: I'm curious when you go around the world talking to different Deadly Premonition fans, do you get a different reaction from different fans around the world where they like certain things or want to talk to you about certain things more than others? When you go around the world talking to fans, what do you hear from people?

S: There are so many fans who is loving Deadly Premonition. Some of them say, "Please don't change anything, even if it was very bad, some kind of controls or graphics, because it is kind of a charming point of Deadly Premonition. And of course, he is so pleased to hear such kind of comments as well, but it's been two years now. He is kind of grown. He is now thinking that he has to change or improve Deadly Premonition. Some of the fans may complain about it, but he'd like to say, "Trust me. This is SWERY's game as well."

P:What has been your biggest takeaway from this whole experience. I know making that game took a number of years. It was shown at TGS, then you showed it again several years later, and it was a big surprise to a lot of people. Having gone through this whole experience, and now you're going through it again, what's been your biggest takeaway from this as you move forward.

S: He had so many issues during the development. This game was going to be canceled four times. But after those troubles, he finally reached to the release date. He can remember the day this game was out. That was so impressive day.

This game will be available the last week of April in North America.

I love the look on Patrick's face at 01:45

"I have to act like I understand a word this man is saying! Oh crap, maybe I should just nod right now? Yeah, that sounds good"

To be fair, Vinny/Drew might have spliced the footage together and gotten Patrick and Ryan's reactions to what the translator was saying at the time.

That being said, I often wonder what the proper etiquette is those situations. Do you honestly just sit there and nod your head randomly to a person speaking a language you don't understand? I suppose you can't just stare off into space like an a hole. It would be hilarious if Swery was ripping into Patrick in japanese, and Patrick was just sitting there nodding along.

In most cases they respond and react to the translator and in post the translator is edited out so it looks like they react to the person speaking in a foreign language, usually in television they don't dub and looks like the other is capable of understanding every word the foreigner speaks. But no idea how GB worked this interview.

I just finished watching the first season of Twin Peaks, and what a ridiculous cliff hanger ending. It makes me sad that everything I've heard about Season 2 has been ho-hum.

I think a lot of the negative reception of the second season has to do with people getting kind of miffed that it starts straying pretty heavily away from the 'crime drama' genre. I mean, it was always Lynchian, but it was also pretty accessible. Once it started really flaunting its esoteric nature was when people started dropping. Yeah, it gets pretty convoluted, but that doesn't bother me much. The second season is great and contains one of my all-time favorite scenes in TV history. I wouldn't listen to what you've heard from people.

It's really tiring and I'm beginning to dislike the community because of it. Giantbomb used to make me glad to be a gamer and I enjoyed visiting the site, but the cynicism around him really is too much.

It's almost like most people genuinely dislike Patrick and want him off the website.

>"Most"

You mean loudest. Vocal minorities gonna bitch, doesn't mean everyone is on your side.

Nah, I'd say most. I rarely comment, but I also dislike Patrick. Too much of a hipster. Also, his interview questions sucked. Boring and generic.

The word hipster should be banned. People are just throwing it around with reckless abandon these days. Also I'd say you're wrong, I'd say the majority of people are fucking over the fact that Patrick joined the site.

I don't like him either - I just find him annoying - but I usually shut up about it since I'm still giving them money. At least he's not in everything (though recent videos say otherwise), although he did get into this Swery video which is great since Patrick had so much to do with the Deadly Premonition ER. At this point I kinda feel like Giantbomb is just using Patrick to troll the fans that can't stand the guy, and I guess you have to give them props for that?

right, that's the measured and reasonable conclusion to draw. it's not like he's been staff for nearly 2 years now and is producing content that otherwise wouldn't get made. or doing the job he's paid to do. that would be INSANE.

@Fobwashed: Definately watch the rest of the series. I almost didn't do watch it from all the hate it got, but it's actually pretty good. It drags a little bit midway through the season, but all of it leads up to a fucking fantastic finale! It would have been a much better season if they edited many of the pointless sub-plots out, and had Lynch and Frost been writing it again. But even then it's still awesome. The final two episodes are definately worth trudging through the mediocre subplots!

On the subject of this Patrick stuff, man, it's really sad. It's so unrelenting, this hatred of him, that I'm starting to expect some sort of bizarre motive. What are you all trying to accomplish, make him feel so shitty that he eventually decides to leave the site? I'd like to think that I don't put a lot of stock into Internet commenters, but if I were in Patrick's shoes, this nonsense would be really difficult to handle. It's one thing to be constructively criticized—it's nice to look into oneself in that sort of manner. To be repeatedly insulted for no good reason every time you show your face, it can't be easy. This sick hive mentality shit is pretty disgusting. You all need some to do some deep self-reflection.

@Jeff: See what we need in the new Giantbomb site is a personal "hellban" button for each user. That way I can slowly weed out all the annoying little kids (and adults that act like kids) and even though they'll still be whining, I'll have a Giantbomb free from ignorance and hate. That's the Giantbomb I envision in the future.

I'm on the fence about Patrick. On the one hand, he generally writes great news stories and brings something to GB that they didn't have before. On the other hand, he just doesn't mesh all that well with the rest of the crew. Which is a pretty tall order considering the other 4 guys have been close friends for a long time and are also 10 years older than Patrick. It would be tough to bring anyone into the Giant Bombcast and ask them to mesh perfectly with the amazing dynamic that Jeff, Ryan, Brad and Vinnie have had for years and years. I think that is the main reason for all the "Patrick hate". On his own he is a good guy, and a good writer, but when it comes to the Giant Bombcast, again it's a tall order for anyone to join that well oiled machine and fit in perfectly.

While I suppose that'd be ideal in a way, the ability to get exposed to less stupidity to begin with...that doesn't sound bad at all to me.

Not really buddy. The translator has a pretty strong accent and I can totally sympathise with anyone struggling to understand what he was saying. It's not ignorant, racist or stupid. It's just the way it is. I got the gist of what he was talking about though. Swery is such a great quirky guy!

not really, the speech is stiltered but extremely easy to understand?

My only real hurdle is that he refers to SWERY as "he" rather than speaking as him and saying "I," which I didn't realize at first. Once I realized that, the whole thing actually fell into place for me.

The crew have made their fondness for Patrick clear, not sure there's anything else to say: he's here, get used to it. If you can't, take your pick of a million other gaming sites. After all, the only reason to really follow GB is because you thing Jeff and Vinny and everyone are cool. And they're all friends of Patrick.
