Nintendo of Japan has today confirmed one Wii title due in early 2010  - " Zangeki Reginleiv", an action title from Earth Defense Force developer Sandlot Games. The game was previously announced as "Dynamic Zen", a title which may be retained for a possible Western release down the line.

This has to stop. Nintendo is announcing games MONTHS now before release. Whatever happened to waiting a year?

Anyway, I wonder what it's about.

It's about killing shit and has 4 player online coop. Definitely set for Western release given the blood and shit. Those screens look messy because they're snapshots from a tiny few-second clip released in 2008's Media Summit. I'm sure it's changed a bit at least by now. I guess it would be kinda like Serious Sam with melee weapons instead of guns given the amount of enemies seen? Something like that. Very not-like-Nintendo for sure.

Oh I'm sure it will look far better in it's present state, still, you can make out it's got a nice fantasy art style, even in those crude shots.

I wouldn't mind seeing a clip of this in motion. If you can find it...

EDF 2017 is a blast, so very interested to see how this turns out. And even in those blurry pics, that's a pretty impressive looking game, mostly from an art design perspective.

This is supposed to be Nintendo's first M game they have developed.  I'm interested to see how well it does.

They aren't making this game, Sandlot games is. It says so right there. And if you mean publish, they have published a whole bunch of them in the N64 and Gamecube eras.

Looks like this game was first announced as "Dynamic Zan" so looking up that name might result in that video of the Media Sumit. The title now is "Zangeki no REGINLEIV". THe game is about a young valkyrie that has to fight of Nordic mythology inspired monsters. 4 player online (no additional fees unlike the Japanese version of Monster Hunter 3). The site i'm looking at says it is to be released February 11th in Japan

Found another screenshot and an EXTREMELY interesting detail concerning the gameplay. It was said to be motion based when it was announced (oct 2, 2008 article) so considering Nintendo is publishing this it is pretty safe to assume that this will be a M+ game, now i am really looking forward to more info on this game.

The original pics are bigger but given their quality you can't see much more. No face shots. Maybe trailer soon, or at least Famitsu website coverage.

I hope it turns out well. I was a big fan of Sandlot's Robot Alchemic Drive (RAD) on the PS2. Man, that game was awesome! I heard there were sequels in Japan that were never released in the West though, I think.

To do it now would be very early. Especially since Nintendo titles tend to be so secretive we don't even know how it plays until it comes out. In fact, we don't even know it's western name. That Japanese name won't do very well here.

But it would be smart to at least make the actual page first so that the game exists on Giantbomb.

It has gotten better looking since E3, it's no longer FF12 quality. But still looks pretty generic graphically.

One can only hope it's as good as EDF in terms of playability... The facial models look pretty weak in my eyes, but what's worse is the use of neon colour slashes which remove any sense of maturity this title had.  It looks really lame, which is a huge shame as the blood effects mean very little when you have that nonsense up on screen. It reminds me of the garish green gloop that was used in that crappy WiiWare MP shooter from Hudson.

Hopefully the games playability will make up for it.

EDF was hardly the pinacle of HD visuals on 360. This looks better artistically and about the same technically even though it's on inferior hardware so Sandlot are improving (or maybe that's Nintendo's effect). Of course it's not a city with destructible buildings so that plays a part too (though I'm sure there are different environments, the screenshot with the 4 players above shows buildings, but they probably don't collapse with melee hits). I don't think you'll be seeing faces much outside the cut scenes and if it's anything like EDF better faces wouldn't save the story. As for the line that you draw with your cursor for your character to then slash over, I imagine that's not used when Motion Plus is enabled. The footage shows slashes, a few in sequence at one point, without that line drawn first (unless it's just how the video was cut). That said, they should still fix it for people without motion plus, it wouldn't be that hard to just make the cursor have a subtle trail instead of that fat line. Hudson's WiiWare shooter (Onslaught) is pretty cool considering the limitations of WiiWare and that it has features you were hard pressed to find in retail Wii titles at the time. Online co-op is still a rarity. It does fall short of long term entertainment and I never got 100% comfortable with the controls but I don't consider it a bad purchase.

I really liked Onslaught, its cheesiness was great. I remember the controls feeling "right" in that game. I really should finish it one day but solo it is not nearly as fun as with other people online in co-op. It might have had a split-screen mode but I'm not sure.

Other then that i'll have to side with you that the game it's presentation makes it look quite wacky.

Nobody in this thread said the budget 360 game was. I wouldn't compare the alien B-movie style of EDF, alongside the Norse mythology style found here, in my eyes they're two completely different styles.

EDF seems to have a lot more going on in it's graphics, and not just with it's environment destructibility. Zangeki seems to be a slower paced game. and in turn has a significantly smaller NPC count, and most probably smaller NPC models also. I doubt very much the game will have bosses as large as those found in EDF 2017.

I doubt there will be, It looks integral to the design.

I really don't think it was intentional, that was the product of a Japanese developer trying to make a  MP FPS for WiiWare. It showed in all areas of design ^^

I don't know the budget this game is on, being full price or budget price makes little difference. Super Mario Galaxy certainly cost more than some trash other companies put out on Wii but it was still at the standard 50 price like most games so that doesn't mean much. It's still Sandlot so unless they hired more staff or worked on it for far, far longer than EDF it won't have cost that much more. That wouldn't necessarily be reflected in its price.

The model size has nothing to do with anything at all, polygon count and textures and such is all that matters, you can have it at any size you want after you create it without affecting performance further. Of course, if it's smaller you can get away with less detail since it's going to be less visible but the (presumably minion) enemies seen so far aren't smaller than some EDF minion enemies. The giants are bigger than the ants and such, and possibly bigger than the EDF bipedal robots. We haven't seen bosses but if they want huge bosses they can have them, maybe with less normal enemies around (or with less types so that there are fewer unique textures) when a boss is there to allow for it to have a little higher resolution texture (but not that high, it's an SD game). It's all up to how competent and creative a developer is and how much time is available.

It doesn't look slower paced to me (but if it is, maybe it's a better game thanks to that, who knows), the footage is too short to really judge that, and likely from the first level(s). If you replaced the setting so that you were in a modern city shooting rockets instead of magic blasts and arrows it could have just as easily been short bursts of awkwardly cut EDF footage. It's a glimpse of the game, not a full representation. Making assumptions about what the whole game will include from a few seconds of footage is pretty silly in any case, negative or positive of course (I'm just saying huge bosses are plausible, if they're good bosses or bad bosses is not just up to their size), but it's looking promising. I'm sure there's some more exciting EDF footage to see (as flawed as that game is) but the first short footage of Reginleiv is hardly going to be the best part of the game. Still, the fact they show a horde of giants as the very first enemies hints that maybe the enemy size is a big factor to their design and ideas.

Of course EDF didn't have an online mode at all (it's certainly harder to have all those enemies networked) and had a ton of slowdown with all that it pushed even on 360 so I won't mind at all if they scale some of that back in attempts to provide a smoother (if not always smooth) and more feature rich experience while adjusting the gameplay to keep it engaging with whatever compromise they make for those reasons. If they don't manage to provide something good it doesn't mean the inferior hardware was to blame, there are ways for creative programmers and artists to provide experiences you wouldn't think possible, like the Hitman 2 levels that had tons of NPCs around or the PlayStation 2 game that's got tens of thousands of enemies to slay (and, true, little else). It's all up to how competent and creative a developer is and how much time is available.

And I'm not saying the Wii can handle anything the 360 can for such games, EDF would be impossible to port as is, I'm just saying this is as close an approximation as it can probably be from what we've seen so far, and in my eyes it looks better in most ways (the character designs and animations and the online features and stuff) and worse in others (doesn't have lots of shinies everywhere, but it also doesn't fit the theme so yay) but overall a package I didn't expect to see this promising. EDF was so flawed on 360, I thought a similar Wii game from them would look amateur.

Sandlot isn't exactly a top tier developer but EDF has its fans and this shares many similarities so it could end up good if they/'ve learnt from past mistakes, that's all I hope for really, but if that's not how it is, oh well, I'll play something else, there are more games than I can afford.

I'm pretty confident this will be a full price affair on Wii...The fact is a 360 game of this type could never hope to sell full price at retail, which is exactly why EDF was a budgeted title selling at a measly $35 when it launched.

The model size does matter, larger models require more texture work and more complex polygon structures to look and animate believably, unless a developer wants them to look like shit. Take a look at how simple (and crude) the movement is on those larger models in the Wii games trailer, there's a good reason for that.

The only decent looking large well animated models I've seen, are on Monster Hunter Wii, but even there it comes at the cost of the environment looking totally desolate.

The bipedal robots, there's a lot larger NPC models in EDF than that, 2017 has some of the largest ever seen : /

It looks like notably slower gameplay to me on the evidence of the video. EDF is a fast paced shooter that shoves a ridiculous amount of NPC's on screen constantly, this on the other hand is a run and slash game that utilizes magic. I cannot imagine it having anywhere near the same number of enemies to deal with looking at that trailer, and knowing it's style of gameplay. it's bound to have slower gameplay to suit it's unique gameplay mechanics.

For some reason the camera during combat looks very odd to me, like it's too far zoomed in or something. Hopefully it's better in actual play and not just awkward in screenshots or trailers. Anyway, this game does look interesting, the mythology-based setting intrigues me.
