As budgets get larger and the ambitions of the industry’s most prominent developers tend towards the focused and cinematic its almost inevitable that we begin to compare games to film. Actually calling a game an 'interactive movie' though is an observation some might take as derogatory, it might put them off. As Jazzpunk's brash, stylistic opening blares and swoops across the screen, you'd be forgiven for assuming that it's a game by Brendan Chung, the designer of bold, fantastic games like Gravity Bone, Thirty Flights of Loving, and the upcoming Quadrilateral Cowboy. Its got the same audacity and a similar visual style, full of loud colors and clean lines. Cold War World. Agent Polyblank goes to take up his next mission in a wornout trailer. Oh I forgot to mention the psychedelic intro. Sits down, fart chushion, laugh. Jazzpunk is a comedy in the burgeoning sub genre of first person games like Gone Home or Thirty Flights of Loving that seek to tell a linear story in a non-linear experience by shepherding the protagonist with incentives. It’s not so often that I find a game where I can’t really properly come up with the words to explain why it’s so appealing. A friend of mine has labelled Jazzpunk as an 'interactive joke machine', which I feel sums the game in its entirety. This game was one of the biggest letdowns I've ever experienced.I normally like oddball/non sequitur humour and feel like I understand what they where going for here but it was completely underwhelming; it's almost like someone watched your favourite TV show, then made a game out of it but had no understanding of why the TV show was so great.I really feel like I missed something huge here, but I don't care enough to figure out what....

Jazzpunk is a bit of a timecapsule. The "random for the sake of random" vibe of the early 201X's is on display in this game, but I think that sells this one short. This is what you might get if Leslie Nielson were born in 1980 and grew up playing Monkey Island and making YTMNDs. Short, silly gags abound, with little purpose or thematic connection.
