Overview
When Blade was first created in 1973 by Gene Colan and Marv Wolfman, in Marvel's Tomb of Dracula he was very different from the modern perception. During childbirth, his blood was contaminated by a vampire's blood as it feasted on his mother. This left her boy with an odd immunity to vampire bites. This gift made Blade an excellent vampire hunter, unafraid to get up close and personal with the undead to avenge his mother. Despite his name Blade only carried wooden knives for most of his career. Blade didn't start carrying a sword until the early 90s when Marvel was prepping the ip for LL Cool J to turn into a movie, because the movie studio definitely couldnt use the traditional version of the character.
In 1998, New Line Cinema released a movie based on Blade starring Wesley Snipes which would continue to define the character to this day. A year after the movie's release, Morbius bit Blade and he finally gained vampiric superpowers but it left him dependent on consuming human blood for sustenance, like seen in the movie version. And yes, they started calling him "Daywalker" like in the movie.
