@Mike: Controls all around are definitely more smooth yeah.
I got the game early. Ask me questions (No Spoilers)
@decibel: Greg Miller said that it plays significantly better than Ground Zeroes. Assuming you've played Ground Zeros have you noticed that at all, if so, what's changed?
Meh, I mean it controls fantastic but I didnt notice a huge difference between GZ and TPP in terms of controls. (movement, crouching, etc)
How long does it take to unlock suppressors for sniper rifles? I was watching an impressions video and the guy said it took him half the game, which has me worried. Is it story locked or is it something I could unlock earlier by mainlining Mother Base stuff or looking for certain specialists out in the world?

That sounds about right. I still didnt unlock any suppressors for my snipers. I guess they don't want the game to be a cake walk so early on. You'll just be picking everyone off from a distance and not bother with the sneaking gameplay!
@decibel: I agree, it would make things easy, but my playstyle is CQC and tranqgun. I was mostly asking because I was planning on using Quiet as my Buddy for as much as I could, but I was concerned that her rifle might end up raising alerts frequently.
Well, unlocking silencers and new snipers will mainly depend on how much time you spend upgrading mother base, recruiting high ranking people, and gathering resources. and kinda takes a bit of time.
I got an early copy of it too, but I'm a little afraid of playing it before Tuesday. Don't want to get my account locked or anything. Am I safe if I just play it offline?

Why would your account be locked? You bought it, just play it. Thousands of people have the game already.
Is there anything that does not feel great? What are some of the nitpicks you have.
I don't love the way the cassette tapes are implemented. You're encouraged to listen to the tapes because there's important story stuff in some of them, but you can't really listen to them whilst out on mission because the second Miller starts talking to you, you can no longer hear the tape. And he (and Ocelot) are quite chatty. So you're basically forced to sit in your helicopter listening to them.

Man this is something that has been bothering me while replaying GZ. Miller just. Won't. Shut. Up. Everytime I'm sneaking around and might need to have some awareness about who or what is moving around me, he has to pop on with some really obvious shit like "yo Snake, don't let guards see you. Peace, I love you, bro!"
@giant_gamer:Nop, you have to play GZ Separately. Which is highly recommended because you'll feel you missed out on something.

As far as I know, if you're in the open world doing missions, you can't have a helicopter pick you up and drop you off at another landing point immediately. The Chopper departs out of the map and into a loading screen that takes you into ACC mode (Still in the chopper) where you can select another landing zone, After Another loading screen you're back where you wanted to go.
@skullpanda1: Yeah, my store of choice as well. :P
I've played all the main entries in the series apart from Peace Walker, I played Ground Zeroes and picked up the story well enough from the recap but I didn't appreciate the story as much compared to previous games because the story heavily centred around two characters who were only really in PW (though I thought the game itself was fun regardless)
Anyway, do you think the story would still hold up for someone who has a limited knowledge of Peace Walker?
Does it still have awkward third person accuracy like GZ? Like say I am aiming the tranq. gun at someone directly in the middle of the crosshair and when you fire it just completely misses them. I understand the gun itself is offset from the center but when they're 20m+...

not the guy but a big reason for this in GZ that there is some pretty severe bullet drop for tranquilizer darts at range, i have to imagine the bullet drop mechanic will make it into TPP because i thought it was pretty well considered as a way to balance the tranq gun (as in all other metal gears it was accurate forever, you were just on limited maps)
@marc: How did you handle the Quiet fight? Everything I try just seems to get me killed in one hit
@itwastuesday: @bellmont42:Bullet drop in TPP is different than how it was in GZ. Now it only starts when you fire at a target that's more than 75m away from you.
Try doing the mission at night, using your nvg goggles. Makes finding Quiet much easier. I beat that mission with my tranq. pistol and nvg goggles. S-ranked it too. Felt pretty good about it.
@atomicoldman: Apparently you can turn Ocelot/Kaz off in the options.
@altonbrown: Thank fuck.
Sorry if this has been asked already but I tried reading some responses and started seeing things I didnt want to know yet. Anyways, is this game tonally the same as the other games in terms of 80's action movies filtered through a Japanese developer with silly Johnny-pooping-his-pants-elements thrown in, or is it more self serious which the trailers imply and is what soured me about ground zeroes.
On a scale of 1-10 how metal gear is this game? Also does the story/characters address why big boss doesn't speak that often (no direct spoilers just want to know if it's addressed and if people consider it spoilers spoiler tag it for me just in case) thanks.
I get this game free, but god i won't be able to play till at least 2-3am on tuesday if the game releases on time. I'll have mad max to fill in a couple hours though.
So, I see that you folks feel that the controls have improved from GZ.
I'm specifically wondering about how easy it is to select something nearby. In that first tower in GZ, if you choke out that guard, it can be a nightmare selecting the spotlight from like... a foot away. It was really fiddly.
@bocam:I did it by just popping back and forth with a scope, looking for the little sparkle. Took about 4 or 5 hits.
You can totally avoid the whole encounter and go back, which was what I did initially... Thanks sandstorm.
There's a mission involving a truck I found to be nightmarishly hard. I sometimes find that the missions are so open that you can kinda be overwhelmed. There seems to be an insane amount of ways to approach a lot of encounters, occasionally I wish there was a tiny bit of guidance like the codecs would give.
@sunbrozak: Supply drops on da head :D
@david3cm: The silliness is no longer in the story, but it's still there. Example: there is a cassette you can find of a certain soldier pooping. The silliness is still there if you want it. It is my helicopter entrance music. Just because.
@oursin_360 depends how you define Metal Gear. The story is very much still Metal Gear. The cutscenes are just much further apart and not nearly as long. The silliness is also more in the gameplay and as easter eggs, rather than in the story. The story doesn't explain why BB doesn't speak a lot, but it makes sense given that you can play most missions as other characters. Most of Snake's dialogue is in the tapes. The tapes are basically codec convos that you can still play the game through. The conversations are also not nearly as cheesy, and are more natural and to the point. The amazing gameplay makes up for the lack of lengthy cutscenes. Big time. You can also always tell what's on Snake's mind by seeing his face.
Very minor non story spoiling spoiler (it actually is a fun thing to look out for if you know this ahead of time. It spoils zero story, just one minor scene involving Eli): There is a scene on MB where One armed Kaz CQC's Eli, and if you look at Snake, he has a shit eating grin on his face watching it. It's great.
@marc Oh man. I might have to try that. Especially now that I can get tanks via supply drops.
@altonbrown I looked in the options to see if I could turn it off, but I found nothing. The only thing it seems that you can turn off is the voice of your iDroid.
@oursin_360 I would say that it feels very Metal Gear whilst also feeling quite different from previous Metal Gears. The gameplay is significantly different, in the sense that it is the most open and the best playing to date. The plot details are still as crazy as ever, but the directing of the cutscenes is quite different, similar to Ground Zeroes. They are very impressive to watch, if also quite sparse. In regards to why Big Boss is much quieter, I think it's more that Kojima wanted to take Big Boss in a different direction with the swap to Kiefer as a voice actor. The performance takes some getting used to, but it's growing on me.
Quick question to anyone who knows, is ground zeroes in phantom pain? (like the tanker mission from mgs 2) or is it a separate game entirely. I'm about to buy both and wondering if this is necessary.
@spacefish: Ground Zeroes is a totally separate thing. I think you go back to that area at some point in The Phantom Pain, but you do different stuff.
That being said, Ground Zeroes is free on PS+, Xbox Live Gold, and Steam (w/ pre-order), so you probably don't need to actually buy it.
Yay, got the game today. Man that intro before the "press options button" is already super cool imo :)
To me it still feels like metal gear a lot but also not I guess....It seems more show dont tell than previous metal gears which I can actually appreciate way more than I would have thought. It is still 100% a "crazy" kojima game with an insane attention to dumb minute details, Its just less cheesy and stupid in the cutscenes themselves.
Also, If like me you were in love with the way the 2 cutscenes in GZ were shot you are in for a fucking treat.
I know this has already kinda been answered, just wanted to chime in ;).
Havent tryed skipping a cutscene yet and I'm also not ashamed of my words and deeds yet
Thanks @marc and @sunbrozak Seems like it's about a 7 on the metal gear scale but still a good game for other reasons. I started to get used to keifer in gz's but he still feels like a new/different character all together from snake/big boss
