Great article, Patrick! And just in time to contribute to the EVO hype.

Super fun idea for a blog.

I only know about two-thirds of the list, but I'd have Rita higher as she was the character I remember liking the most from Vesperia (which is also my favorite Tales game) between being the group nuker and also the deus ex machina of the game. But I get that she might not be quite as much fun to play as some of the combo heavy brawlers. I definitely agree Yuri is the best central protagonist of the series. In a sea of wishy washy and bland, his edge definitely stood out.

I would put Colette lower, because boy was she annoying. Sheena and Zelos were definitely the best two from that game.

@darth_navster: Severed is one of those games I just keep liking the more I think back on it. Right now, I think it'd be in my top five favorites if you put a gun to my head and made me rank a list, but yeah, it's going to be brutal trying to come up with a list at the end of the year. At the very least, I hope Wii U owners check it out. I mean as bad as the Wii U install base is, at least it's better than the Vita. You would think they would port it to tablets at some point.

@rorie: I deserve it! Man, it's depressing with how good Tekken 7 looks realizing that Namco can't figure out what to do with Soul Calibur. SC I and II are my two favorite fighting games of all time.

@slag: So I have a Steam controller, but for XCom 2 I played it with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. I haven't been overly enthralled with the controller yet, but like you, the Steam Link has been the most transformative piece of gaming hardware I've bought in years.

"Which year is the best" discussions can be tough. I mean, it's all too easy to say "blank older year" will never be topped because it founded so many concepts. The best parallels to that can be found with sports, where it's too easy to just go like Babe Ruth/Ted Williams is the best ever and that will never change. But this could turn into a really long and complex discussion.

@eder: I know, I keep trying to bang out things on my backlog, but it's been tough with all the great new stuff out. I especially want to go back and play the Shadowrun Returns and Hong Kong after how much I liked Dragonfall. I also just bought the Homeworld Collection, which I really want to go back and play. I bought that with Deserts of Kharak during the Steam sale (Kharak is really good btw, but just not quite good enough to make that top ten list).

@spankingaddict: Thanks!

@wheresderrick: Yeah, the multiplayer is totally forgettable. That's okay for me because Doom was never about the multiplayer experience, even though it was the first online multiplayer shooter. Now if Quake Champions can do for multiplayer what Doom did for single player....

@cyclonus_the_warrior: Yeah, granted that's counting the Collection, but it got really crazy how many of those they were putting out. This is a good starting point for the series. It's going to be on a lightning deal later today on Amazon I believe. I don't know how much it will be for, though.

@biospock:I take them at their word about that the watches were damaged in shipment. Aksys's actions strike me more as just generally not knowing how to handle the incident rather than anything malicious.

From what a few people on NeoGaf have been able to gather combined with a more helpful response I got from Amazon Customer Service today, I think what happened is this:

  • Aksys told Amazon to ship the game and watches separately. Amazon agreed.
  • The version of the game with the watch was listed under a different SKU.
  • Because it was under a different SKU, Amazon is still waiting for copies from Aksys matching that SKU even though at this point those are just regular edition copies of the game.

That's all just an educated guess though. But it would make some amount of sense. Dan Halen posted a general Tweet yesterday saying he was still working with Amazon to resolve the issue, but hasn't really offered any new information since. One person on NeoGaf did say they got the game today with a "Limited Watch Edition" sticker on the box.

Update: The SKU/ASIN was indeed the issue:

@Ephemeral_Chaos I can't speak for them, but I'm under the impression that ASIN numbers are causing the issues.

@Ephemeral_Chaos If a game ships without the watch, I think it closes out the order. So we've been working together on getting a new ASIN

@soldierg654342:Yeah, I can only speak to my friends, but I have one friend who wrote the game off when he saw the waifu advertising and another who decided she would wait to see how it impacted the game before buying it or not. So I appreciate the responses from everyone.

I bought enough during the Steam sale that I'll leave this on my Wishlist for now, but I'll probably check it out later in the year.

I feel like Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE is the type of thing that 15-20 years ago would have come with a small book of liner notes to explain all the cultural references. As a fan of both Fire Emblem and Megaten, I'm super curious to see what that thing is. But I'm probably going to wait for some reviews to actually buy it.

But it's likely to get overlooked as the week goes on as Mighty Number 9 will, for better or worse, dominate the discussion this week.

Man, the community really knocked it out of the park with some of this E3 material. I'm so glad someone compiled all the food jokes into one convenient video.

Thanks for the shoutout this week!
