2013 Games I've played

Simply a list of games from 2013 that I have played, along with a short bit on what I think of them so far. Most of what I've played this year has been a fair bit older, though; I hope to populate this list more soon.

List items

  • (PC - Finished) A very good action-adventure game with a paper thin plot that tries to take itself too seriously. A lighter tone would have gone a long way toward making this game better-remembered, but what I took away from this game was stupid fun and not a thing about Lara's supposed character development stuck.

  • (3DS - Unfinished) This and Nocturne are pretty much the two games that propelled me into an interest in grindy dungeon-crawling. Even moreso than Nocturne, and much like last year's X-Com Enemy Unknown, this is a game boiled down to pure mechanics. And those are some very well-balanced, interesting-to-use mechanics. Part of the game is exploring the most effective class combinations and moves, the other half is exploring the game's dungeons and overworlds, beating some very difficult bosses and enemies. Drawing your own maps is actually a more relaxing mechanic than a frustrating one like I feared. 40 hours into the game and still counting, I think it's great.

  • (PC - Finished) Almost the opposite of Tomb Raider, this game has good-not-great gameplay and a fantastic story. The gameplay itself is certainly fun, but it doesn't hit the same high notes that Tomb Raider does. Story, though, soars over most games, complete with a mind-blowing ending. Exactly how the goings-on of the climax are happening isn't entirely clear, but the point is well-made and it ties up all the loose ends that it needs to in spectacular fashion. I just wish the I could call the gameplay more than "mostly good, but never great".

  • (3DS - Unfinished) This game ought to be a Game of the Year contender pretty much everywhere. Thus far, it has almost perfectly balanced my interest in the gameplay and the story. I'm not just here for either like some other entries on this list; I'm here to see the story and the gameplay through to the end. I originally started the game on Normal/Classic, but decided that I didn't like to see my characters die, so I restarted on Hard/Casual and that's the way I like to play the game.

  • (3DS - Unfinished) Like Fire Emblem Awakening, this should probably be a game of the year contender everywhere. However, I can't say that it's quite as good as FE: A. Don't think that it isn't a fantastic game, however. It still is. Probably the best SMT game thus far, and a very good reason to own a 3DS.

  • (3DS - Unfinished) So technically this is a game for the Wii that came out a while ago, but it came out this year on 3DS and this is the first time that I've played it. It was mainly a nostalgia fueled purchase, but the game itself seems very well designed and fun to play from what little I've played of it. Unfortunately, the control scheme that allows you to use the directional buttons also switches that X/Y buttons with the L/R buttons, and the 3DS's analog nub does the 2D platforming no favors. Not a big deal, but enough of one for me to mention, and controls simply don't feel as fluid as they did in DKC2. This doesn't stop DKCR3D from being a lot of fun, though.
