Giant Bombcast 04/12/2016

Bonfire Watch 2016 is on! In between trips to the Steam forums, we touch on early Star Fox Zero impressions, unearthed Neo Geo prototypes, the Ratchet reboot, entering the Gungeon, Nintendo's "friendly" market research, a variety of vape flavors, and the great video game CEO cage match.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

@newhuman: It's not vaping itself that's "crazy." It's the way the most hardcore vaping enthusiasts act that people think is weird. 99% of the people I know who vape are perfectly normal people who just use it instead of smoking cigarettes.

Same could be said for us video game types

True, but to be fair the GB guys can be just as derisive about those types as well.

@sethmode: Yeah, no one has a leg to stand on in those "you're weird because you're super into x" type of arguments.

Jason's defense of SFV sounds almost exactly like Brad's defense of Destiny when it first came out, which brings something to mine that Ryan once said: everyone has their games and genres that they turn a blind eye to bullshit from.

@visualizer: Goofing on strange fanatics can be funny of course - but sometimes the vaping stuff seems to veer on old man rants about tattoos, gauging ears, neon hair colors, etc. Even aside from nicotine, every weed smoker I know has switched to a vaporizer for example.

E: Oh also congrats on cutting back on smoking - I had quit before vaping became what it is now but I bet it would have helped.

My 5 Nintendo games, excluding Rare games which are in Rare Replay.

1. DKC Tropical Freeze. Very refined platformer, beautiful game, good coop.

2. Super Mario Maker. Tons of Nintendo charm, lots of people make amazing levels. Better than the original games.

3. Majora's Mask 3D. Best Zelda, super atmospheric, great writing. (Could do WWHD instead)

4. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. You become a pro wrestler in this. Later you solve a murder mystery on a train. This game is the best RPG.

5. Smash Brothers 4: Brings everything together though overrepresents FE. (Mario Kart 8 also option here. No FE characters in that!)

@unastrike Grandpa Chewbacca's VR porn companion in the Star Wars Xmas Special was none other than disco diva Donna Summer. As a future tech bonus, Jefferson Starship shows up to perform a song as a "hologram" later on in the special.

I know way too much about the xmas special for having only seen it once.

Is it me, or did the sound sort of "change" at the beginning? Sort of like mono to stereo or something went on.

For a game reviewer, I can see why you might not been as hype for StarFox 64. As a kid with no money, playing it over and over on each path was fun. I dunno if StarFox game-play is interesting anymore though...

Perhaps we need to kill this darling.

Star Fox 2 is way better than 1 though.

Also the five games are Super Mario World, Zelda Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Kirby Super Star Ultra. Paper Mario 2 and Wii Sports Resort are great too. Chrono Trigger on DS if that counts.

Star Fox 64 was wildly interesting back when it came out. The branching paths actually changed what happened in missions and the ending. The repetition was actually fun.

I actually had an idea about what Star Fox could do to become interesting. It could do a bigger branching-paths thing like 64, but with a weird time travel Zero Escape style story at the core that requires varied playthroughs. That way there would actually be a compelling reason to try different things.

EDIT: I credit Star Fox 64 and Mario 64 as being the games that made an N64 an absolute must-have for me. The demo kiosks at every store had Star Fox running and it was super impressive. I don't know what Jeff's jaded weird perspective is coming from.

@schlorgan:

The thing about most hardcore street fighter players is that literally the only things they care about is VS mode and ranked online. That's it. They don't care about tutorials, story, or arcade mode. All the problems with Street Fighter V is related to the stuff that the hardcore fanbase always ignores.

The reason Jason is still defending the game is because all the stuff they fucked up is the stuff that he never touches. The core fighting mechanics are phenomenal.

As someone who's been to more than a few vape meets (before I saw them for what they really were), Jeff's presumptions are pretty much spot on - It's a craft beer type crowd with added evangelism.

Two hobbies which can happily co-exist, but the weirdos tend to spoil it for everyone...

Street Fighter V talk on this podcast has officially become the Destiny talk of 2016. "Is the game still disappointing?" "Yep, but the core gameplay is good!"

Also Star Fox 64 is great. You couldn't get away with selling a repeatable score attack game like that at full price today, but I dunno what Jeff's argument is about given the same could be said about Star Fox SNES.

I don't know why but Dan's Miitomo talk kind of annoyed me, lol. That being said, I used the stupid miitomo app and its 100% stupid and no its not a game; its described as "free to start" so it will definitely be nasty with microtransactions at some point.

I'm sorry but what?! Star Fox 64 wasn't good? Since when? Star Fox 64 is the only Star Fox game that I've ever heard anyone mention or seen anyone play. The multiplayer was so fun with friends, and the single player was amazing for its time. I beat the single player campaign endless times trying to get all of the bonus tidbits as a kid.

It's the last Star Fox game that was worth playing that's for sure.

I get the feeling there's a really enthusiastic vape guy working at CBSi that they are picking on every week.

Also, I almost wrote "enthusiastic vaper," is that a thing? Are people who vape called vapers?

It's my understanding that for Nicotine the range between effective dosage and toxic dosage is very narrow as far as drugs go, this is why it could be concerning to have the concentrated liquid around your house.

Also, Raspberry Bubble Butt is an aroma I would happily have in my home.

@redhotchilimist: In Demon and Dark though those boss weapons were at the end or at least part of upgrade trees, not just a vendor that traded you this boss soul for this weapon.

Not even sure Brad played enough Dark Souls 2 to get to the weird bird lady that sold boss weapons.

One benefit for messing with Miitomo is the sweet My Nintendo Platinum Points rewards. You can earn up to 245 points each week if you use friends, and still can get 70 per week if you don't. Makes getting Wario Ware: Touched and whatever else might catch your eye a lot easier.

I feel like Battleborn is getting a bad rap. While the game borrows some mechanics from MOBA, it is an objective class based shooter first and foremost. There are fully featured single player and co-op modes, along with the competitive pvp modes with no microtransactions. Everyone is quick to compare this Overwatch which also seems odd as they are very different games. People are totally writing off this game without fully understanding what it truly is.

"It didn't grab me" - Every release this decade outside of Mario Maker, Superhot, & The Witness.

Or Nuclear Throne, or Trackmania, or any of the hundred other games that Jeff likes and has talked at length about liking.

Seriously, this whole "Jeff hates games now, he's so jaded" thing just needs to die already. Other than the obligatory "they're getting paid off by [name of console manufacturer]" type comments this genre of Giantbomb commentary is by far the laziest and dumbest thing that people on this site say.

Are you guys seriously not mentioning Metroid Prime as a good intro to Nintendo franchises? It's an almost perfect 3D version of Supe Metroid.

Also, I read somewhere (pc gamer, I think) that the crash in DS3 is caused by the long flowy robes and graphical effects from the bonfire. No problems on my end with the 970 and AMD cpu.

Them talking about Dark Souls III sounds like me two games ago. I thought Dark Souls was WAY easier than Demon's, simply because I spent so much time playing that first game. None of them really felt all that daunting since. Well, except my first experience with DS 2 was Scholar of the First Sin with its bullshit enemy placement.

It's strange being reminded that other people masturbate, though I would watch VR porn featuring the cast of Giant Bomb. Also I guess Jason browses /d/.

Man, even Ratchet and Clank can't do 60 on the PS4? I thought a game with a more cartoony art style like this it would be easier and make more sense to tone the graphics down a bit or just 'stylize' it more. It's really sad that this isn't the generation consoles shot for 60fps 1080p.

Wait, smoking a hookah with alcohol instead of water isn't a common thing? I thought it was. Everybody around here did it back when hookahs were the thing. My friends used absynthe most of the times. I just drank it from a glass like normal drunk people do, never tried to smoke.

I don't know shit about vaping but I feel like Jeff's assertion that it's more of a tobacco smoking thing than a weed thing is off. Maybe what they are inhaling is closer to a cigarette than marijuana but their overall demeanor and attitude reminds me so much of the pothead idiots that I went to high school with that I just can't decouple the two. I've never met a smoker that would talk about taking fat rips off their cig.

P.S. Before someone loses their shit, I'm not saying all people that smoke weed are idiots, I'm talking specifically about the ones that go around wearing as much hemp clothing as humanly possible while giggling to themselves every time the number "420" comes up in a conversation in any way. They're like the vegans of weed. They are incapable of not mentioning marijuana on an hourly basis.

Every time they talk about beer, I die a little inside. I can't tell if its just that everyone in the Bay is more of a dick than everywhere else, or just Jeff being Jeff, but his depiction of craft beer people doesn't seem entirely accurate. I worked in a beer bar for a while, and I don't remember anyone yelling at people about how their preference in beer was wrong, ever. Pretty much everybody left everyone else alone, drank their beer, and that was that.

Isn't being a dick about someone preferences the same thing their doing to you? Why not just leave everyone alone?

Admittedly I still get a giggle out of them skewering vaping, so I guess I'm no better.

Good news! The hard enemy placements become much more reasonable very quickly (and are often not harder than OG Dark Souls II). Plus, certain areas are even easier than OG Dark Souls II's!

If I were to bag on people who vape (and I probably wouldn't, partially because outside of this site, I have never heard nor seen anything to suggest it is a thing that ever happens ever), it would be half because of the term alone. "Vape" just sounds like some incredibly lame and tacky euphemism invented by people who were actively high.
