Giant Bombcast 04/12/2016

Bonfire Watch 2016 is on! In between trips to the Steam forums, we touch on early Star Fox Zero impressions, unearthed Neo Geo prototypes, the Ratchet reboot, entering the Gungeon, Nintendo's "friendly" market research, a variety of vape flavors, and the great video game CEO cage match.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

I get the feeling there's a really enthusiastic vape guy working at CBSi that they are picking on every week.

Also, I almost wrote "enthusiastic vaper," is that a thing? Are people who vape called vapers?

They prefer to be called vapists. The really enthusiastic ones are serial vapists.

All companies are cold calculating profit driven machines. Some just make a lot of fun things.

That said if you aren't paying for a service then you are the product. You are no more of a sucker for playing Miitomo than you are for using Twitter or Facebook.

No no no. We all know the best Star Fox game is Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.

Took the words write out of my keyboard.

If you can't have fun playing the first level of Star Fox 64 like 6 times at a minimum, yeah, you definitely are going to be annoyed at the game's design. I had fun trying to get better at it and master it and looking for secrets/bonuses.

That's sounds like a poor value proposition to me where the value is achieved by replaying the first mission multiple times (and i enjoyed star fox 64). As the above quotation mentions, Rogue Squadron was a much better evolution of the genre.

@andrewb: I had the crash issue at Firelink, put the lighting to low and its been flawless since so you should be right. I am wearing a massive cape, long hair etc and no issues since making the adjustment.

Nice. Hopefully they've nailed the issue down so I don't have to think about it in the future. I've still since had it affect me even with my current standard attire. Cloth physics should not come at the cost of gameplay/graphics. I'd imagine From and Nvidia are both on it, but they should have been weeks ago.

Pretty much the same for me too. I think I had one after making that adjustment (but I might be wrong there). So I have had a few but overall not anything terrible for a new game. Runs really smooth otherwise too.

Every time they talk about beer, I die a little inside. I can't tell if its just that everyone in the Bay is more of a dick than everywhere else, or just Jeff being Jeff, but his depiction of craft beer people doesn't seem entirely accurate. I worked in a beer bar for a while, and I don't remember anyone yelling at people about how their preference in beer was wrong, ever. Pretty much everybody left everyone else alone, drank their beer, and that was that.

Isn't being a dick about someone preferences the same thing their doing to you? Why not just leave everyone alone?

Admittedly I still get a giggle out of them skewering vaping, so I guess I'm no better.

Yeah I was going to say it's the same with vaping. I actually know multiple people who vape and they're not so lame about it and they are using it to stop smoking cigarettes (which like they say on the podcast will have to be tested but hard to believe it could be worse). As someone who is very against people smoking cigarettes it's really hard to hate on too much. With a lot of hobbies there is a hardcore group that can be annoying so I think it's just poking fun at that.

But that's just Jeff's style. Dan and Jeff will both bag on something for the show. I mean listen to Jeff talk about ICP and then realize he had an ICP jersey so...

I just have a laugh and remember they are being entertaining. I'm someone who does enjoy craft beer but will drink a 40 any day too so it's all good to me.

Jason was right about the colloquial Louisville pronunciation, definitely more of a -vool rather than -vil.

And the Dark Souls series is something I've always appreciated but loved to watch more than actually play. Love the show!

I would die a happy man if the Bomb crew never discussed vaping or vape culture, ever again in life. The whole shebang is profoundly uninteresting to me.

I feel like Battleborn is getting a bad rap. While the game borrows some mechanics from MOBA, it is an objective class based shooter first and foremost. There are fully featured single player and co-op modes, along with the competitive pvp modes with no microtransactions. Everyone is quick to compare this Overwatch which also seems odd as they are very different games. People are totally writing off this game without fully understanding what it truly is.

I agree but i put most of the blame with the marketing team here. Have they ever even bothered to try to explain what Baltteborn was about? The only way i know what it is, is thanks to Totalbiscuit video about it. I didn't even knew it had single player at all.

Would enjoy that 5 Nintendo game discussion if they had to choose one game per system.

Also not even a mention of Metroid Prime bummed me out.

*The following may or may not be satire. Don't take it too seriously*

Hey Leslie. I just heard your email on the Podcast and I'm here to help you.

What your father said to you, wasn't out of malice, but because he wanted to protect you.

Here are the top 5 Nintendo games you'll wanna check out and help you reinforce the love for your family, with the knowledge that they were right all along:

  1. Hotel Mario: Everywhere you turn you will probably hear Nintendo fans go "Mario! Mario! You gotta play Mario!". They are just trying to scam you into their weird cult and before you know it you'll be trapped in the Amiibo hole. Hotel Mario is the definitive Mario experience. It comes on CD, so you know it's better than a cartridge game and you don't have to break your fingers on some dumb Nintendo 64 controller.
  2. Superman 64: Speaking of the Nintendo 64, it's the worst video game console ever made. Aside from the controller being stupid, everything on it looks bad and there are barely any games in real genres like RPG or SHMUP. An example of this is Superman 64. Time and energy was spent to create this thing, which Nintendo fans consider the greatest game with the greatest superhero ever. Why they prefer Superman over Batman is beyond me, but you can't reason with these people.
  3. IronFall: Invasion: You and me both know that mature games for mature gamers such as ourselves starts with classics such as Gears of War and Inversion. It took ages for Nintendo to catch up and when they finally got there with last year's IronFall: Invasion, it was already to little too late. A dissapointment... Just like Nintendo.
  4. Yoshi's Island: You'll often come across Nintendo fans saying that the Super Nintendo is the greatest console ever made and while it does have many good games, it unfortunately also has Yoshi's Island. In a desperate attempt to capitalize on the Jurassic Park craze, Samba De Amigo from Nintendo, came up with this ridiculous game about a dinosaur carrying a baby around, because that's what he thinks of his own fans: That they are babies. In many ways Nintendo fans got what they deserved.
  5. Balls of Fury: I suspect that Nintendo poisoned the water supply at some point to make the Wii the best selling console at all time, because anyone who's sane can see that what Nintendo considers premiere video game entertainment, just doesn't cut it against Xbox 360 classics like Rockstar's Table Tennis, which did everything better in every. single. way.

No, instead of spending time on Nintendo's "finest" just to get into retro gaming, you should check out a real system... Let me introduce you to the Turbografx-16.

The only Starfox game I've ever owned was Starfox Command. I had played 64 and Assault (I think it was Assault; it was on the GCN and didn't have dinosaurs) and watched someone play a bit of the dinosaur one. So I have no idea what possessed me to ask my brother for Command for either a birthday or Christmas, but I did. I only played it a handful of times, because immediately in I was annoyed by how it was just a series of battles linked together by some quasi-RTS fog of war crap. Didn't enjoy that part in the slightest. I played the multiplayer over DS download play at lunch with friends a few times, though. That was pretty ok.

I visited my friends this past weekend, and I learned one of them vapes now. He only did it as I was leaving, so I didn't get to experience the smell or anything. AFAIK he never smoked so I have no idea what he's doing...

haha that's hilarious, thanks man. Funny enough I happened to stumble onto that episode when I was listening to random old episodes three weeks after we talked about it. I wanted to leave a comment, but I was afraid I'd come off like a crazy person so far after the fact. Thanks for following up!
