Giant Bombcast 11/17/2015

Battlefront! Fallout! Tomb Raider! StarCraft! The games of holiday 2015 are upon us, but that doesn't keep us from other important topics like old Bruce Lee games, Nintendo's first post-Iwata Direct, the fate of System Shock, seafood pizza, a bunch of game-review reminiscing, and the things you shouldn't take home with you.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

I've played all of the Zelda games except spirit tracks and I even owned the GameCube and Wii versions of Twilight Princess yet it's the only game in the series I remember virtually nothing about. That's how bland it is.

I remember more about Skyward Sword.

Also the whole vault 111 section is the tutorial. They explain all of the movement and UI options via prompts. Including VATS and how the PipBoy works.

It's hard to miss really. The help prompts even show up periodically as long as you stay in the relevant section of vault 111.

Even if you completely miss all of them there is an in game help section in the same menu that contains 'save', 'load' and 'quit' that also explains all of the basic UI and control options.

Even I noticed that and I'm literally half blind so please stop claiming that Fallout 4 doesn't explain stuff just because you have been to preoccupied to notice it, Dan.

I wish the comment section of the premium 'cast was this active every week, although it is sad that it is just people complaining about an ad.

How very true. And to think it's over an ad that should appeal to everyone here. My subscription ran out over the summer and I almost missed a similar deal. Would've been nice to know about through the Bombcast like this ad, but I guess we can't have nice things.

Oh, you missed them mentioning it on every live stream, on the main page with an article dedicated to it, and at the top of this very page that says "Premium sale is on! Extend your sub for just $35"... you missed all that huh?

After they come back from the break they just start talking about a game and its news and how you can sort things from it and use your computer or phone now.

After about a minute they mention Mario 3 and airships and then I figured out they were talking about Mario Maker. So confusing.

@abetorias: When Jeff yelled at toques, my toque that I keep on a statue on my desk fell over and knocked some stuff down. It was ACTUALLY offended by him.

@toug: You just offended your toque by calling it a hat. It was probably trying to escape.

@chicken008: Yup. Also toboggan is a type of sled, so the Southern thing must mean a hat you would wear when you go tobogganing. Maybe that's why Brad calls them that.

Yes, indeed I did miss that over the summer. Not everyone subscribes identically to the way that you do. I mostly am a subscriber to show support to a site that I love. I infrequently come to the website, largely due to the people posting negative & sarcastic comments. I don't watch many live streams, I use an app & most of what I watch is not current. Like a lot of users most of my content from GiantBomb is the podcast.

If it helps. You've compellingly won an argument no one was having. I openly admit it. I'm inept at taking in advertisements. It's completely true. I have a very good ability to completely ignore all advertisements, I just moved out of Chicago & if I paid attention to every ad I saw I'd never get anything done. *This bus is telling me there's a new vodka from Absolute... Wait! This building is telling me about the new iPad... let me write this down...*

(I just noticed all your posts against this ad, I can see why you might have been a touch defensive. My comment wasn't directed at you & if anything was meant to show that though some members might have been bothered by the ad, I'm in the group that isn't. We agree on some areas (I too found it odd) and we might disagree on others (I'm not bothered & wouldn't consistently post about it in the comments). But we are both entitled to our opinions and that's okay. Now, I'm off to do something that I love rather than spend more time nit-picking something that "sort of sucks" but is "not a huge deal".)

This episode sounds like the crew is unaware that Picross 3D 2 was announced for Japan. No talk about a western release yet though.

If you want to "run into stuff" and a living interesting post-apocalyptic world (instead of just endless action and "dungeons" poor on lore) I'd suggest New Vegas, Brad.

Bummer about all the Fallout-talk. While I agree that the game has way too many performance issues and some stupid-ass bugs, I think you are being way too harsh.

Jeff seemed really down on the game and they all talked about it like.. I don't know are they playing a different game than me? So Jeff has found what, like two in game notes that were not story related, one of them being the super mutant orders? How does he play this game?? I had my freaking inventory full of notes and holotapes even before setting foot into the city, ten hours in.

Some of their criticisms are absolutely valid, some of it seems like it's completely out of thin air. If you don't want to deal with the skills/unlocking/inventory limits then that doesn't mean others won't like that stuff. Honestly it seems like they all have so little time to even play games anymore, that a game like Fallout or The Witcher seems like a giant hassle to them.

That's sad.

In all the Fallout 4 talk all over the internet, no review that I've seen even mentions the bigger issues with the game, aside from performance and bugs.

One: They kicked the skills out! There are no skill checks anymore, except for unlocking and persuasion.

Two: The combat system seems incredibly weak when dealing with longer range encounters. Your shots would not automatically hit back in Fallout 3. Your skills determined their success. Now with skills gone, everybody can just snipe fools from a distance and the AI kinda has nothing to throw against that.

Ugh, this comment is way too long. I apologize.

The whole Wind Waker thing was just a matter of time and place. First off: realtime 3D graphics were just entering the post-"early" era. That is to say, the Dreamcast/PS2/Gamecube/Xbox generation was the first where the graphics didn't look like they had to be massively compromised in order to exist. Faces were now fully modeled instead of being painted onto fleshy slabs. Fingers were individually modeled instead of clumped into a weird mitten. Things looked like things instead of crude representations of things. People were excited to see their favorite characters fully realized and the Spaceworld demo offered a look at Zelda in this light, and when Link was instead revealed to consist of very simple and stylized geometric shapes with a flat, painted on face, it was seen as a betrayal of this desire. The loop has since closed on that and such art styles are considered unique and a breath of fresh air, but at the time it seemed like a lateral (or backwards) move rather than a forward step and therefore a waste of resources (until, perhaps, the game was finally released and looked gorgeous and helped bring about this change in perspective).

Secondly, games were still very much in a teenage angst period. People wanted their games to be 'gritty' and 'mature'. They wanted Zelda to show up Final Fantasy. They didn't want a whimsical cartoon story about pirate adventures, they wanted dramatic revelations, long emotional cutscenes where sympathetic characters die-- they wanted Sephiroth saying dot-dot-dot and then doing Matrix shit. Anything else was a step backward for "games as art". Ironically, when Nintendo later tried to appease these people with Twilight Princess the reaction was "FINALLY.... wait, it's 2006 and I don't really want this anymore."

This hate for Twilight Princess and crying that it isn't Wind Waker is really fucking dumb. I'm about as tired of it as the hate for Final Fantasy VII.
Fair enough, you don't like it, but to go on and on and almost throwing up when it's mentioned is just dumb. A HD version is coming, ignore it or give it another go, but to dimiss it to the point where making it sound like people who enjoyed it and want to replay it are crazy people is just really dumb. Fucking get over it.

Oh man.... do you guys thing the world would flip out if Link were a girl in a new game? I personally think that'd be sweet, wouldn't really change the feel of the series very much either, Link is so androgynous to begin with (aside from Z64 maybe).

Man, that Twilight Princess talk was so painful. TP is amazing, easily better than Ocarina of Time in every aspect, the world and dungeons were much more interesting than any other game in the series up to that point. And we already had a Wind Waker HD, so TP is the right choice. And boring characters? Remember fucking Midna, the best character in the entire series? Also Ilia and Malo and great reimaginings of series mainstays.

@sammo21: Dude, the best Zelda game is A Link Between Worlds. :D

Oh man I remember Jeff's TP review, gfaqs boards were on full out pitchfork mode. Probably the first time I've learned of Jeff as well, since I wasn't really familiar with GS or any other review outlet at that time.

It's my personal favourite to be honest. Very excited for what ZeldaU will turn out to be, and I appreciate what SS tried, but among the classic 3D entries, I'd take TP over everything easily. Too bad what we saw from the HD port so far doesn't seem to be doing as effective of a job as WW HD did. Would love to at least have a new lighting system.

How about a shorter membership ad for the premium version of the podcast? Like 5 or 10 seconds. I don't mind the hint that there's a sale to extend I just don't need a two minute pitch to get sold on something I already bought.

That story about the Sonic synth-weed is pretty amazing, Dan needs to write a memoir. But I admittedly used to smoke, and even when I did I couldn't stand "stoner culture". The terms Jeff uses to make fun of it is barely exaggerated and hauntingly accurate.
