Quick Look: Star Fox 2 (Plus the Rest of the SNES Classic Line-Up)

When we heard there was an unreleased sequel hidden inside the SNES Classic Edition, we were immediately excited to finally see Rap Jam: Volume Two. Sadly, it was not meant to be.

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

@benpack - despite StarFox 2 selling as the $80 price-point game; that was typical new Nintendo game prices in 1996.

Does PC count as a platform? If so, then it's far and away the best.

I love that the refresh rate in Contra 3 was synched in such a way that bullets weren’t visible half the time.

No.Stop.Dont.Buy. I kinda want this thing just to play those snes games at a proper 60 hz like their meant to without a hassle.(With the proper controler the game was designed for) That is, if they'll even be available in stores ofcourse.

Edit: of course they arent, not only that but apparently all the stores here in the netherlands charged 10 to 50 euros more than they should for the preorders just because they could. fuck that.

This thing is almost $200 in Sweden.
Appears to be our distributor adding their tax. Nintendo ought to end this partnership.
I've not had much experience with Bergsala, but people have always hated them.
I now know why they cry.

Chiming in to say the prices in Denmark are fucked too, cheapest seller is roughly $150. With stores charging up to a crazy $316 as the most expensive :(

I always wanted to play Donkey Kong as a kid and I love the look. The way Jeff feels about it is how I feel about the way F Zero looks. If I could afford the £80 I would be tempted to buy this but I have a SNES and I don;t play that.

Once again Jeff insists that Super Metroid having a map whatsoever means it was a badly designed game with a direct objective indicator at all times, as opposed to a much more intelligently designed experience that flows from one major upgrade to the next super smoothly. Brad did this as well, they both don't seem to recall what Metroid games have what mechanics; specifically that Metroid Prime is the one that had a bunch of concessions on by default.

Wait... If @brad doesn't know anything about the Megaman X games, does he not know about how the localization team named the bosses in X5 after Guns n Roses members?!?

Seriously, Brad. Ask Ben about this.

I thought the 2 AM upload time was a placeholder. Then I got an alert that SNES Classics were on sale on Gamestop's website a little after then. I already have a preorder, but I wanted to try and get one for my less fortunate friends.

The website crashed after I hit the "Add to Cart" button. >_>

Why do they call them quick looks if they aren't anywhere near quick? 2 hours and 40 mins is not quick.

@bhhawks78: It's less than $4 per game, better than the Virtual console's $8-$10 per SNES game.

Regarding overclocking the Super FX chip: yes, you can do it to a point (too much and the games just crash), and it's been done in both emulation and real hardware. (Both sides of the video above are apparently real carts.) In Starfox, the gameplay seems to be tied to the number of frames displayed, so overclocking results in speeding up the entire game.

I would've loved to play it like that back in the 90s.

Apparently the GBAs audio problems were a combination of moving from chip tunes to (highly compressed) samples and the GBAs DAC being God awful. You could have put CD quality audio on a GBA cart and it still would have sounded like trash going through that thing.

Just so you know, people have been saying some variation of that for years, and while I don't want to sound mean here, it's not exactly helpful. They're called Quick Looks because they started out shorter and grew in length as the site went on, while the name stuck. Also, there are 21 games here, which when spread over 2h24m is about 7 minutes per game. Even a short check-in with each game is going to add up to a couple hours.

So, the GBA's audio hardware that Brad talks about is indeed pretty shitty. It has the original Game Boy audio, plus 2 channels of audio that has to be mixed in software. Most developers didn't really give a shit, not even Nintendo, so to save resources they went with a really crappy output sampling rate. There's examples on YouTube of people replaying music of some of the games with the original quality of the samples in the ROM and it sounds so much better, sadly it's not a process that works on every game and only some that use certain audio drivers. The N64 was much the same way which is why a lot of N64 games somehow manage to have worse audio than even SNES games.

I wish they'd "Remaster" some the GBA games. Just tweak the visuals a bit to better suit backlit screens, and fix the sound. Metroid Fusion and Minish Cap would be so much better if their audio wasn't so ear wrenching and clearly designed to be played out of a small mono speaker where good audio didn't matter anyway.

Of course I did, but I never managed to see Castlevania IV. I remember them doing Dracula's Curse and the next thing I knew they were on the PC Engine game. Must have been short.
