Quick Look: Star Fox 2 (Plus the Rest of the SNES Classic Line-Up)

When we heard there was an unreleased sequel hidden inside the SNES Classic Edition, we were immediately excited to finally see Rap Jam: Volume Two. Sadly, it was not meant to be.

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

@haze: Even through an emulator where the hardware DAC has no influence the audio is still really bad. It's mostly because of the shitty audio drivers and Nintendo not mandating some kinda audio quality. Although since doing better audio would have used more CPU, it would probably have been very contested.

Brad didn't realize that Vinny Vania went on for like 6 more games after Vinny moved to the east coast. :(

Of course I did, but I never managed to see Castlevania IV. I remember them doing Dracula's Curse and the next thing I knew they were on the PC Engine game. Must have been short.

Yeah, Castlevania IV is probably the easiest game in the series. I think that one only lasted 3 episodes for Vinny.

Why do they call them quick looks if they aren't anywhere near quick? 2 hours and 40 mins is not quick.

Oh no! The YouTube comments have found their way to the main site! As @antipoderightfully said, it's just a naming convention at this point, don't worry about it. Although, for the amount of games they showed I might argue this was actually quite quick.

Well I can't wait to hate read the Youtube comments for this one, once it hits a bazillion views like the NES Classic QL did.

@brad: If I recall correctly, he kind of smoked that game. It's lighter difficulty coming off of the insane "bash your head against this level and boss seemingly forever" style of Dracula's Curse seemed to put Vinny in the right place to savage that game.

genesis ghouls n ghosts is 100% a different game

Correct. The Genesis version is based on the Arcade game, and it's a pretty faithful port. The SNES version goes beyond that by adding more presentation to the graphics, improved music, and Mode 7 effects. Visually, it is a better game. But the Arcade and Genesis versions didn't have that slow down problem.

The bad GBA audio is also why it fucking sucked for so many years that the only version of Yoshi's Island you could get was the GBA one on the Wii U VC. I thought there was some rights issue but apparently not since they have them here. Supposedly there was some kerfuffle about the rights to the Super FX chip so no StarFox or Yoshi's Island re-releases.

Sucks that you can't just get this bundle for the Switch, I don't really care about getting an extra thing that needs an additional HDMI slot.

Next time you hear the Final Fantasy fanfare, think of the chorus to "I Miss You" by Blink 182, won't be able to unhear it.

@awkwardl0ser: I try not to think about ANY of Blink 182's songs. :b

Also, dammit, I kept telling myself I didn't want an SNES Classic.

I was lying.

I was awesome at the original Street Fighter II on the SNES. Every variation of it afterwards, though? I just couldn't adapt.

But man, it felt awesome to beat the crap out of all my friends in that original game. I'd even set the handicaps so they'd have max power and I'd have the minimum. And then Championship Edition came out. Alas!

Now that I have one, I really want to play some of these games again. Good luck to the rest of you wanting one.

The only sad ommissions so far are Sim City, Final Fantasy II/IV, Actraiser. and Chrono Trigger (which I never played much of but I get is a prettt critical part of the SNES catalogue).

Yoshi's Island doesn't deserve the Super Mario World 2 moniker. That title undersells just how good Yoshi's Island is.

- Every JRPG from this era looked/sounded like Chrono Trigger (or I guess Chrono Trigger looked/sounded like every JRPG).

- I should have played more Kirby games.

- Star Fox's framerate was way worse than I remembered.

- Star Fox 2 seems kind of awesome.

- I played a lot of Street Fighter II. Watching it now, I'm not sure why.

- They chose the correct Super Mario Kart course.

- Super Mario World is still extremely good, but the whole "punching Yoshi" revelation is beyond upsetting.

I've only got two hot takes

Port Town is actually the best song from F-Zero people just play past the first two tracks. And FF2 is better than FF3. You summon a ship from the ocean and go to the moon.

Nevermind I just got to the Mega Man X bit and I would say that Mega Man 3 has the better soundtrack. Not that 2 isn't good. But 3 is better.

Incidentally, you can switch between 1st-person POV and 3rd-person POV in Starfox 2 by pressing the "Select" button (exactly as it was in the space-battles in Star Fox 1).

Starfox 2 seems like a mess, and i'm not just talking about the framerate. (since the first was like that too) Adding layers to a game is great when it's warranted but the XCOM esque % til fucked just seems tedious.

Oh well, it's cool that's finally out but I dont trust reviewers to look past the novelty and weirdness of the situation to give it a fair score. (if they give it one) Not that it matters that much, it's not like it's buying advice since you already know whether you're willing to jump through hoops to get the SNES mini or not.

That being said the whole package looks great, with a slick and friendly presentation and lots of good games. Shame about the supply shortage.

I don't recall the map in Super Metroid giving you any useful information or any "go here" indicators. Fusion did that for sure but not Super.

Online shortage seemed pretty bad over here in Europe too, but this morning a local department store chain just dumped 500 units across the country, so I walked to a store and picked one. Still more expensive than over the seas, but less expensive than what most online retailers were asking.

Started with Zelda, though having watched this, I'm really tempted to start up Super Metroid too. That title music alone...

My mom, my brother and I rented both Secret of Mana and the multitap in order to play it with 3 players. And we finished it. One of my better memories.

Also, who do I have to kill in order to have a ER of the remake of Secret of Mana with 3 people from Giant Bomb?

Agreed! I would love a SNES Classic for nostalgia sake(Its still my favorite console of all time). But at the same time, just release these on the Switch already, I would rather play them there so I can have them on the go.

That's awesome. My parents basically checked out of gaming with my brother and I when we got an NES after owning an Atari 2600 and 7800. My mom tried playing Super Mario Bros. once and got killed by the first goomba and that was it for her.

Listen. Yoshi is basically a horse for mario.

If you are fine with horse racing, if you are fine with spurring and using horsewhips, then it is hypocritical for you to be against Mario punching Yoshi.

@phished0ne: Er, that's some circular logic, given that many (I would even venture to say *most*) people in the developed world are, in fact, opposed to the whipping of horses.

I imagine even more people would be opposed to seeing a rider beat a horse over the head with their fists. :b

He's just pointing, you knuckleheads. This came up somewhere else recently too. Mario's got his shorts hiked up past his bellybutton, he's just pointing where Yoshi should lick, nothing to see here. #wetblanket
