Unprofessional Fridays: 09/19/2014

Drew's a stunt driver, Dan's a professional DOTA player, and lots of other fibs are uttered on today's show.

The end of the week is here! You made it! Let's sit back, relax, and close the week out in style with some video games.

@ilikepopcans: I agree, it just feels kinda lazy, and I like Dan a lot, his stuff at GI was great, but eh, white knights will come in and tell Dan he's the greatest...

@mangachaos: Earthshaker can kinda go wherever he wants, but generally sticks to being top/bot or running around the map. His health is very low so he is useless as a tank and his punches are generally pretty weak "this can change fast if you want to XD" so he is mostly used as a kind of melee mage with high damage, high stun spells. Good for starting fights and keeping people in/out of a battle depending on what you want.

I'm sorry, I don't want to be this guy, but Dan playing Dota felt really, really mean spirited. I'm all for the occasional ribbing of the game, but man they ruined 9 peoples' game, who all seemed pretty polite given the circumstances. It just seemed really immature, which sucks because I loved the show besides that segment.

Bet none of you had a problem with Ryan and Vinny griefing players in the Uncharted 2 Quick Look, or Jeff, Drew and Vinny griefing players in the Arma III Quick Look on the role playing servers.

And those were just 2 examples I remembered off the top of my head, I'm sure we could look back through the video archives and point out further instances.

@shtinky: you can leave the game whenever you want without any penalties in those games. sure it's a shitty thing to do either way, but the 9 other players in dan's game were essentially stuck there unless they wanted to receive a penalty for leaving.

In Uncharted 2, if you leave a co-op game, the whole thing ends for everyone.

To be fair one person cannot so easily ruin an entire game in those examples, and you also aren't committed to it for a half hour or more.

Beyond that it just felt kinda mean-spirited. It might be another matter if he had just been fucking around in a game but he was just in it to troll people who like DOTA.

@icantbestopped: oh, i thought he was talking about normal MP. that's a shitty thing to do as well then, but i think purposely ruining a team game like dota or lol is a little bit worse. it's not like you can just quit and join another server to hop in to the action again. you have to spend maybe several minutes finding other players, then a few more for pre-game stuff, plus like i said, you can be punished for leaving a game. i don't know if you play games like this or not, but it is a tiring god damn process if it happens often.

one thing is having someone that's just bad, but that's excusable. another thing is having someone who just decided to be a jackass at the expense of 9 other people's time. fuck that shit

In Uncharted 2's multiplayer, I believe if one person quits the game drops out everybody.

And it was mean spirited when Jeff and Vinny (Drew wasn't the worst offender) were trolling those role players in the Arma 3 Quick Look, I remember one guy even saying on mic: "leave me alone, Giant". While that instance doesn't have any objective penalty, it's still subjectively offensive to them and it's a waste of their time.

But that's not really the point, it's people in the community cherry picking every thing Dan does wrong and making a big thing of it, but they wouldn't dare call out Jeff, Vinny or the others when they do the exact same thing.

Well whatever, if Jeff, Vinny or whoever dedicated a segment on a live show to trolling people trying to play a game I'd think that was pretty fuckin' lame too. Especially if they were so damn boring about it.

Well fair play then, I respect that you would call out Jeff and the others for the same behaviour.

Dan's actions and opinions just seem to get called out harsher in the comments than Jeff or the others' would, and I get the feeling there's a double standard going on because Dan is the new guy.

Maybe there is some of that at times but also Dan expresses almost all of these opinions in a manner that is seemingly designed to make people sit up and say something about it.

While I never played DOTA before, I do understand how it works out and why people get angry when you move away from the standard routine. With that being said, people in the comments that are saying this trolling is no different from what they did in Arma 3 and Uncharted 2 multiplayer seem to be talking out of their arses. Just seeing the surface levels of "Serious people" + "multiplayer game" + "trolling" = hilarity, rubs me the wrong way. Sorry. Especially when they fail to see the fundamental difference between role-playing/ add-on teamdeath match from 2009 and a "MOBA" game that demands due diligence to have it fun for everyone and not just one person.

Breaks from roleplaying can be funny and from what I recall from that Uncharted 2 multiplayer stream, quite a lot few people actually join in on the nonsense. Overall, to me this DOTA trolling was not funny because it's just funny to the troller and ONLY the people outside the game. Almost never will the people in-game would find any enjoyment from this and that's my final rub.

TLDR: I feel sorry for those DOTA guys. Especially since they seem to be relatively calm about this and not shouting or expelling insults. Also, "reporting" is a reasonable response and cannot be honestly argued against.

I didn't care much for the DOTA segment, although it was quite funny for the first few minutes. Thing is, Dan wasn't trolling the other players; he was trolling Brad. The other players were just collateral damage.

It's sorta funny if it's truly in jest, even if it does suck for the other players, but I hope Dan doesn't go too far with poking Brad. We can't see their general interaction with each other around the office, but I know I'd get real tired of a colleague pissing on my interests without remorse in front of colleagues and 'the internet'. It's funny for a while, but... you know. I hope their working relationship isn't limited to just that, or it'll turn sour quicker than milk in the desert sun.

which was supposed to go uh... bot when he went top? (Idk, I'm also bad at that. Should be in a sort of infowindow in all of these games.)

I got no idea about Dota's characters, but it seemed to be either a warrior or a tank. The name sort of suggested it as well.

If you're actually curious, earthshaker is a support hero. His main job is to disable people and start fights (jump in, stun a bunch of people and let your team follow up).

Dota heroes, unlike another game, don't really have a specific place they are supposed to go.

Also skipped the Dota segment...didn't enjoy it. My issue with it is that if he wanted to make a point he could have just created a bot match and gotten the same result. The fact that he wasted 4 other human's time was more frustrating to me because it was completely unnecessary. People who thought that was funny are why people like me who have less time than we'd like tend to not play multiplayer games...the idea that someone could waste an hour of my life for basically no reason whatsoever is the ultimate deterrent.

@luck702: Yep... I mean it would have honestly been just as funny to goof off in a bot match without ruining the game for 9 other players. DOTA isn't like a random FPS you can just jump into and dick around in and no one cares much because matches last 10 minutes and people hop in and out all the time. These dudes were about to sit down for up to about an hour to have fun and play a game and Dan just kind of shit all over it.

It's ok to mock the game and rag on Brad because that's just providing us entertainment and not ruining anyone else's game, but jumping in and purposely ruining other peoples games for laughs is real low and I honestly would expect more from you guys. And I don't just mean DOTA, but any other online game. It's ok to be bad at it, but another thing entirely to purposely sabotage others time with the game.
