Originally developed by Sega AM2 and powered by the Sega Model 2B CRX arcade system, it was groundbreaking for its use of 3D polygon graphics for the first time in a football game, and its use of filtered texture-mapping for the first time in a 3D sports game. It was one of the first games to use filtered texture mapping, along with Sega's own Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter 2. It had a high level of detail for its time, extending to the flesh of the players. The game's success spawned the Virtua Striker series of football games.
