Abandoned buildings dot the world, and are left behind for various reasons, from economic downturn and population migration to horrifying calamities. Some especially old abandoned buildings have attracted amateur photographers, called urban explorers, to these modern day ruins, while younger abandoned buildings will often be the target of vandals and looters, as was the case with most buildings in Pripyat, Ukraine in the years following the Chernobyl disaster.
Famous abandoned buildings include Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, Illinois, United States, Pollisya Hotel in Pripyat, Ukraine, and the United Artists Theater Building in Detroit, Michigan, United States.
Abandoned buildings are often used in games for atmospheric purposes, or to heighten tension, as the dilapidated structures often enhance the feeling that something terrible might be just around the corner.
