My local Wall-Mart has a bin where they are liquidating a ton of games. One such game is Alpha Protocol and it's on sale for 10 bucks. Even though the game was very poorly received in it's reviews, is it worth 10 bucks for something to play over a weekend?
Alpha Protocol
Game » consists of 11 releases. Released May 27, 2010
Control rogue agent Michael Thorton as he tries to unearth an international conspiracy in the near future (where everybody seems to have a hidden agenda or two) in this third-person action RPG.
Is Alpha Protocol worth 10 Bucks?
Alpha Protocol is a hidden gem. Buy it and enjoy it to get a hint of what truely branching story design could be like. Just know, all that mechanical criticism you've heard is totally true.
Yes, it's a really amazing RPG. Exactly the sort of thing Bioware should be doing.
The story is rather disappointing, so don't expect much from it in that regard. But there's a lot of branching paths and optional objectives, even just saying certain things to characters changes what happens through the story and impacts how characters you meet will react to you. It's really cool how much is affected by how you play and what you do, it's really fluid and I've never seen any other game come close to matching it. Shame it got such harsh reviews that immediately turned everyone off from buying it.

For $10 I'm willing to give it a go.
If Deadly Premonition was also $10 I'd give that a go to.
Yeah, deadly Premonition was one of those cult classics that I want to get a hold of as well.
Even as someone who wasn't a huge fan of Alpha Protocol for a myriad of reasons that I've already repeated far too many times, it's at least an interesting failure. I would say for $10 go for it. It's one of the few games that actually succeeds on incorporating some serious dynamicism in all your choices and reacting to them accordingly. It's a pity that that's the only thing it succeeds on.

Are they doing this in other Wal-Marts? I've been meaning to get this, but I haven't had the spare $25 for it. I might be able to get it at $10 though.
I have no idea. It very well could be all Wall-Marts or not and just mine. There are others there too, like Modnation Racers and Blur...and crap like The Golden Compass.

Modnation Racers and Blur in the clearance bin? How much are those?
It is absolutely worth $10. The game is not horrible nor is it completely broken. It's a good game that could have been a great game, with a little more thought and polish put into it. I encountered a couple points of frustration (especially early on) and came out of the game thinking that I would like to see them iterate on the idea with a sequel (or the same concept, with a different story). Ideally, they'd apply something like this to a James Bond style game.
Actually, I'd say it's easily worth $20, even.
I had a lot of fun playing the game. It wasn't the best game I've ever played, but unless you are game snob I think you'll enjoy it..especially @ $10.
I've played it and it's a troubled game with many problems but it also does some really interesting things and they are worth experiencing. For $10 I'd definitely pick a copy up.
It's worth $10 just to hear Nolan North's brilliant performance as Steven Heck.
The game is actually pretty fun, too. Although, even though there are a ton of options when it comes to customizing your character, it seemed to me that there were only a few truly viable paths to take, namely the stealth and pistol branches.
It's just barely worth it. It's a cheap enough price point to make you forgive the absolutely shitty AI.
Yes. The shooting and stuff is pretty bad (and don't let people trick you into thinking that RPG-ing stuff like how well he aims is a good thing, because it's not), but the story and writing is pretty decent.
It's totally worth it. Because of the freedom of choices you have, the game comes with a bit of jank, and it only really works if you play it Splinter Cell style (emphasis on stealth, pistols/assault rifles, and melee), but it's conditionally a lot of fun. I enjoyed it more than Dragon Age II at least.

What he said. Play it on easy to avoid the crappy shooting and pump all points into stealth until you can walk by anyone without alerting them. And enjoy some good Nolan North.
Are you attempting to trick the OP? Going stealth is the fast ticket to total frustration in this game and one of the reasons I don't like it that much. Sure, you can stab people to your heart's content but the second you get into a boss fight your stealth skills become worthless, the damage output of your pistol is negligible and the boss takes half your health with a single melee attack. Because they randomly decide to charge you with melee attacks. The game is actually pretty fun, too. Although, even though there are a ton of options when it comes to customizing your character, it seemed to me that there were only a few truly viable paths to take, namely the stealth and pistol branches.
if you spend points early on in assault rifles and stick with them the mechanical problems with the shooting are not as bad. and the branching story is def worth 10 bucksWhat I was going to say has already been said. After hearing all the complaints about the shooting I specced heavily into assault rifles early in the game and had very few issues with most of it. I'd call Alpha Protocol an interesting failure and for $10 bucks I'd say you'll get your moneys worth.
I paid full retail for it and don't regret it at all so do I think it is worth 10... uh yeah. It had alot of small technical problems with it yes that when taken as a whole turned alot of people off. The problem came from the fact that this game is like Ventilaator said on page 1, an RPG. People wanted to play it like it was a shooter but it is not a shooter, not even a little bit. Think mass effect 1 but even more rpg'y than that. Stick to only one or two progression paths and play based on those paths strengths and the game is fine.
