343 Industries Looking to Resurrect the Original Xbox's Massive 'Duke' Controller

Studio hopes to have controllers playable at PAX, then auctioned off for Child's Play.

343 content producer and Bombcast Hall of Fame inductee David Ellis holds the ol' Duke.
343 content producer and Bombcast Hall of Fame inductee David Ellis holds the ol' Duke.

When 343 Industries first showed off Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, an HD remastering of the original Bungie shooter, someone asked if the studio had looked into producing some new original Xbox "Duke" controllers as a funny throwback. There wasn't a clear yes or no answer.

Then, franchise development director Frank O'Connor dropped into a NeoGAF thread today, saying 343 Industries was looking into producing some limited edition controllers.

No, those controllers weren't very enjoyable to hold. Remember those black and white buttons?

To find out more, I got in touch with 343 Industries producer Alison Stroll, who clarified 343's attempts to recreate the original Xbox controller with some Xbox 360 guts, a project that's still being hammered out and, for now, is not assured. Stroll did walk me through the current plan.

343 is talking with several folks known for taking forgotten devices and shoving them into formats never intended. As uncomfortable as the old the controller was, the idea of playing Halo again with the "Duke" is too damn cool. So long as the contracts work out, 343 hopes to produce a handful of new-age Xbox controllers, and have them hooked up to kiosks at the PAX-timed Halo Fest.

There's precedent for this. Notorious hardware manipulator Ben Heck, for example, pulled it off.

There are no plans for this to become a mass produced device, if that's even possible. After PAX, the controllers will be boxed up. They'll emerge once more to be featured as part of the annual Child's Play dinner auction. Stroll said they're looking to have the team sign the controllers, too.

So, technically, you'll have a chance to buy one, but it's not a simple as pre-ordering early.

Microsoft doesn't have boxes full of these controllers laying around the office, either. Stroll picked up the controllers from a local Goodwill for a few dollars, but they'll be working to clean them up--as much as those hulking pieces of black plastic can look brand-new at this point, anyway.

Halo Fest, billed as "largest and most expansive live Halo experience ever," will take place right alongside PAX Prime in Seattle this summer, from August 26 through August 28. Even better, having a pass for PAX Prime is the only requirement for also gaining admission to Halo Fest.

Stroll told me more information on plans for the controller and the upcoming Halo Fest will be available shortly, as 343 continues to establish itself as the new leaders of the Halo franchise.

I would buy the hell out of one, partly because I'm a nostalgia freak and also because I hate money.

Personally i really liked that controller and avoided the smaller version until i eventually got a 360. I'd totally buy a new one that worked with the 360 :D.

I love this controller. Still have it, and every time I play an xbox game I use it. I really hope they mass produce these controllers, with LB and RB instead of the white and black buttons. I would use it for sure.

Hmm my original xbox controller was different. The black and white buttons were under the main face buttons and start and back buttons were on the left side under the analog stick. I never had a problem with it but the controller from these pictures looks impossible to use.

Still got my original "Duke" but as cool as this sounds, I would NOT be interested at all. It really hurt to use those things for any length of time!

Long sessions of gaming with this controller is suicide, it's just stupid awful design, terrible button layout and that damn crest in the middle SO STUPID.

I didn't buy an Xbox until I saw they came with the newer, slimmer controllers. Those old monstrosities were terrible. They made the Dreamcast controllers small in comparison.

I would totally buy this, and I'm not really a huge fan of Halo. Just seems like a cool idea and I'm a whore for collector's items.

Also, love the E3 Bombcast Hall of Fame reference in the picture!

Same with me!  I suppose there's a novelty to making a replica or a new version for Halo's release, but I can't imagine anybody actually PREFERRING to use that giant thing.

Now THIS controller had orbs of steel.

If I ever need to know if someone is a pussy or not, I ask them what they thought of the original Xbox controller.

For people with large enough hands like me aka big enough to palm a basketball off the dribble the duke is GREAT, the normal 360 is great for regular hands, dualshock for tiny boy hands.

I've never actually used the original controller. By the time I got an Xbox, the Controller S was out. I had a hard time using the awkwardly outward placed black/white and start/back buttons for a while, but I got the hang of it. I have pretty long fingers, so I feel like I may have been more comfortable with the original. I held one once, and I thought it was really comfortable, but I never got to test it out on a game.

I remember my Brother and I had designated controllers for the original Xbox, I didn't realise it was called the 'Duke' but I had the fat one. And my 12 year old hands loved it, found the smaller one weird and unsatisfying.

I can imagine if you grew up using this controller you would have no problems, like the old N64 controllers with their tiny buttons, you just get used to it. I distinctly remember changing weapons on Battlefront was (literally) a pain though.

I loved that controller as a tall dude with big hands it was great an I even though the s sucked. So if the make the RB LB above the controller in favor of he stupid whit and black that would be cool. But I would still not buy it because I have like three 360 controllers.....

If I didn't like the Duke, I would lie and say I did, because you know what they say about people with big hands...

Firm handshakes.
