343 Industries Looking to Resurrect the Original Xbox's Massive 'Duke' Controller

Studio hopes to have controllers playable at PAX, then auctioned off for Child's Play.

343 content producer and Bombcast Hall of Fame inductee David Ellis holds the ol' Duke.
343 content producer and Bombcast Hall of Fame inductee David Ellis holds the ol' Duke.

When 343 Industries first showed off Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, an HD remastering of the original Bungie shooter, someone asked if the studio had looked into producing some new original Xbox "Duke" controllers as a funny throwback. There wasn't a clear yes or no answer.

Then, franchise development director Frank O'Connor dropped into a NeoGAF thread today, saying 343 Industries was looking into producing some limited edition controllers.

No, those controllers weren't very enjoyable to hold. Remember those black and white buttons?

To find out more, I got in touch with 343 Industries producer Alison Stroll, who clarified 343's attempts to recreate the original Xbox controller with some Xbox 360 guts, a project that's still being hammered out and, for now, is not assured. Stroll did walk me through the current plan.

343 is talking with several folks known for taking forgotten devices and shoving them into formats never intended. As uncomfortable as the old the controller was, the idea of playing Halo again with the "Duke" is too damn cool. So long as the contracts work out, 343 hopes to produce a handful of new-age Xbox controllers, and have them hooked up to kiosks at the PAX-timed Halo Fest.

There's precedent for this. Notorious hardware manipulator Ben Heck, for example, pulled it off.

There are no plans for this to become a mass produced device, if that's even possible. After PAX, the controllers will be boxed up. They'll emerge once more to be featured as part of the annual Child's Play dinner auction. Stroll said they're looking to have the team sign the controllers, too.

So, technically, you'll have a chance to buy one, but it's not a simple as pre-ordering early.

Microsoft doesn't have boxes full of these controllers laying around the office, either. Stroll picked up the controllers from a local Goodwill for a few dollars, but they'll be working to clean them up--as much as those hulking pieces of black plastic can look brand-new at this point, anyway.

Halo Fest, billed as "largest and most expansive live Halo experience ever," will take place right alongside PAX Prime in Seattle this summer, from August 26 through August 28. Even better, having a pass for PAX Prime is the only requirement for also gaining admission to Halo Fest.

Stroll told me more information on plans for the controller and the upcoming Halo Fest will be available shortly, as 343 continues to establish itself as the new leaders of the Halo franchise.

Really funny how Microsoft came about with one of the worst modern controllers to date and made one of the best one afterwards.

I want one, but I won't be able to get ahold of one this being the case. I have no practical reason to want one, it just sounds cool.

No matter how good or bad you think the original Xbox controllers were, you have to admit the modern 360 controllers, while not perfect are leaps better than those old Xbox ones.

I quite liked the original controller except for those bloody stupid white/black buttons. I think it was mentioned on the Bombcast - it felt comforting to hold. Like a huge teddy bear made out of plastic.

I prefer the "Duke" as they call it, I got big hands and that controller fitted it like a glow. Should have seen me tearing up online :P

Damn! I wish they brought it to market, my giant claws have been feeling cramped on the 360 controller as of late.

This reminds me of the fact that I've still never played on an original XBox. I was too busy with my PS2 at the time.

I will not hear ill words spoken of the "Duke". I personally never really had any issues with its size and with due to the fact that it had six face buttons, thought it was the best controller for fighting games (until Capcom released their Udon branded controllers for the Xbox and PS2).

They bring that shit back, and I'm rebuying a 360. I LOVED the old D Controllers back in the day, because they actually FIT my hands!

Ugh, I didn't entirely hate it but I bought an "S" controller the day they were released so I'd never have to touch the Duke again.  I have no desire to return to those black and white buttons.

I'm surprised some company hasn't released a USB box that allows you to use regular xbox controllers on 360 like they have on PC.

I am glad there are no plans to make this a mass market item, there is no way I would ever buy one. I had a hatred for the "Duke" controller that has not dissipated through out the years. I wouldn't mind having a type "S" original style though, I really liked that controller.

From my perspective, this practice pretty much sums up the whole idea of remaking Halo: CE.

You know what...this is not a good idea. Maybe 343 should be more worried about handling the Halo franchise and not worrying about controllers that were replaced for a reason.

It's cause for discussion. 343 want to get the spotlight for a while. That's all this is.

I got one of those 'Duke' Xbox controllers and it's pretty cool, you don't necessarily need big hands to use it since my hands aren't that big. I don't know whether I'd want a 360 version of it though since I'm happy with normal 360 controllers, good for nostalgia I suppose.

I would be so down with that. As huge, awkward and weird as that controller was for the time, I really didn't have a problem with it. I saw why others were not fans, but didn't bother me in the least.

I would totally buy one though if they releases it.

Honetly.

I remember watching a video on the development of the controller wehre they talked about the process of making the controller and about how Duke was the product of a considerable amount of testing.

I loved that controller, but then I have large hands.

I got rid of my old xbox and everything associated wiht it, but I kept Duke just for nostalgias sake.

I didn't mind them. Weird, but they worked.

As for the black and white buttons, I actually found the smaller S-Controllers to be much worse than the Duke. They're too close to the edge, you either have to slide your hand halfway off the controller or break your thumb to get to them.

Nah. You just keep the pad of your thumb on the A button, then swivel left or right and hit Black/White with the crease of the end joint of your thumb.Same principle as pressing A while keeping your thumb pad over X. The fact that they were in-set into the controller made this even easier.

You only have to move your whole thumb if using the duke since they're placed so awkwardly high and asymmetrically shaped.

I've never heard of it being called "Duke". It was the "Fat" or "Big" controller.

The fat controller was the product of Microsoft listening to the hardcore gamer. The dual shock and Dreamcast controllers cramp your hands. My pinkys went numb. The fat controller was like holding a football. Blood flowed smoothly. :)

It was clearly too big for kids, though.

David Ellis looks a lot like Luke Smith in this photo. Which is pretty weird, considering that Luke Smith is an old 1upper who moved on to Bungie, and Ellis is an old 1upper who moved on to work at 343.
