An Abstract Swan Song

Here's an interesting little game currently being developed on Microsoft's XNA platform.

Yeah, that pretty much sums up Schizoid.
Yeah, that pretty much sums up Schizoid.
Microsoft's XNA program has fostered some interesting ideas, though for a community-drive game-development platform that's been in the works for more than four years, and out in the wild for almost one year, there haven't many public results. The only XNA-developed game to hit the Xbox Marketplace so far has been Schizoid, a conceptually interesting game that I think ultimately proved too high-concept for its own good. I liked some of the stuff that was shown off during Xbox Live Community Games preview back in February, particularly The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai and JellyCar.

Kotaku recently uncovered a rather interesting XNA game currently being developed by one Ian Dallas called The Unfinished Swan. It uses a paint-the-world mechanic that may seem cribbed from something like Okami or de Blob, but the way The Unfinished Swan uses it as a fundamental aspect of navigating the world seems like a fresh angle.  Honestly, this video represents the game's vision far better than any description I might offer.

Hopefully there's more to the game than this short demo reveals, though I could imagine something pretty compelling about exploring all the different angles of one specific, unique mechanic, a la Portal. There's no current release date for The Unfinished Swan, though it sounds like Mr. Dallas is aiming to have the game wrapped up by March 2009. Also, as a weird aside, it turns out this guy also wrote a video-game-themed episode of Spaceballs: The Animated Series. I've never seen the show myself, so I can't say if that's a pro or a con, but it certainly makes this whole undertaking a little more intriguing.

I have my doubts about one of these indie downloadable games capturing people's attention like it was the next Grand Theft Auto, but there's definitely a place in the industry for them. I just hope that XNA doesn't just dwindle into another NetYaroze.

huh. that game seems interesting to say the least. I don't really know what to say about it. Like you said, hopefully there is more to this game than the demo revealed but if not, it is still an interesting concept

Oh, man, if that game ends up having some weird-ass creepy story like Portal did, then it could be really awesome.

This could be the scariest game of all time... if they would simply replace/remove that "pop" noise when shooting the little balls of color.

Thats crazy, you start watching it and its a painting game like you can do in garry's mod, then you start seeing gameplay mechanics like avoiding falling and finding your way when everything looks the same, all very friendly with the popping noise of your 'paint gun', then the warning on the floor and the creepy sounds suddenly make it pretty tense, thats just scary, can't wait to see more.

I saw this a while ago, and I can't wait to play it.

One thing I thought of, maybe it would end up as an intentional feature.

What happens when you paint too much? Now you can't see because everything's black.

Totally liking the way this game is looking. At first I thought it was just some paint-blob shooting thing, but then I saw the paint is used to highlight paths and find your way through the level. Awesome.

At least it's looking really good and original. Hope the gameplay is also good and it has more to it than just shooting paintballs all over the place. I'm definitely looking forward of seeing more.

This reminded me of walking around dark hallways in Silent Hill 2, except the first part was white and instead of a flashlight you had a paintball gun.  I was still freaked out the same.  Its mostly the ambient music and this foreboding feeling of being lost and blind. If this game had some kind of phantom slowly stalking you I'd get chills.  Theme the game around running from your own daemons and the levels represent escaping a psychotic episode.  It could loose that cheezy bubble sound when the paintballs shoot.  Even though they are stepping on a cerebral survival horror game goldmine right here, I bet they are going for a more friendly casual puzzle platformer.  I have a feeling there might be color themed puzzles down the road.

Looks like a dev kit to help in the making of realistic blood splatters in other games. Other then that it is a maze game with creepy noises that don't ever come into play.
What is the point.

Hmm... I'm not sure what to think of this. It's definitely different, but from the looks of the video it seems like there isn't a whole lot to the game. But still, it is pretty interesting.

Wow.  Looks amazing.  Seriously, if they do this right, this could be a new Portal.  The video was fascinating and a little scary.  If they make it a horror game, I could see a great rebirth of the genre.

Oh, and the art style reminded me of the music video from Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy".

There's a map exactly like this on Half Life 2 Deathmatch and Fear Online. You shot rat to paint the rooms instead.
