Apple's iPad: Still Not A Game Machine

If you were expecting Apple to shake up the gaming landscape this morning, you're probably a little bummed. But mismanaged expectations is just one of the hurdles facing Apple's new device.

Great, now I have that damned Ke$ha song stuck in my head again.
Great, now I have that damned Ke$ha song stuck in my head again.
I went into this morning's Apple announcement thinking that if any company is going to make the tablet market make sense, it'd probably be Apple. They're the guys that have, in the past, made complex interfaces seem sensible and natural. More importantly, I feel like I need someone to come in and tell me why a touchscreen tablet would make any aspect of what I do with technology better. Because it hasn't made any sense at all to me so far. After Apple's announcement of the iPad, I feel like I'm still waiting.

The iPad is, if you want to get right down to it, a big iPod Touch. It's got a 9.7-inch screen and a lot of the core applications you get on a Touch or an iPhone have been redesigned to take better advantage of its larger screen. It doesn't have a phone in it, but if you want to go all the way, you can get one that has support for AT&T's increasingly assy 3G network, giving you mobile data access. Though it has a faster processor than its smaller predecessors, the iPad is said to maintain compatibility with the vast majority of existing iPhone applications. It'll even blow those apps up to fullscreen, if you'd like.

I'm left wondering why, exactly, I'd want to do anything like this. While certainly smaller than my MacBook Pro, the device isn't nearly as portable as my iPhone. So if I'm going to be tethered to a product that has just enough bulk to it to require a bag instead of a pocket, I might as well lug my far-more-capable laptop around with me. Really. It's not that heavy. And unlike the demo Apple gave this morning, my laptop works with Flash. With that in mind, the way Apple bills this thing as "the best way to experience the web, email, & photos" already sounds like a fat lie. Maybe they'd do better if they billed it as "finally, an Internet device for people who don't already know how to use the Internet." I don't really mean that as a huge slight--but a closed system like this with a fairly natural interface will probably be great for the people who have no idea how to currently handle "web, email, & photos."

I feel like that extends to the iPad's gaming aspirations, as well. It's a shame that Apple chose to show off a driving game (Need for Speed Shift) and a first-person shooter (Gameloft's NOVA), because those are perfect examples of what not to do on a platform without standard controls. Driving and shooting, those are existing genres with huge legacies on other platforms. By providing that point of comparison, all you do is open yourself up to guys like me who have been playing games for a long time and won't settle for the less-precise experience offered up by a touchscreen and some accelerometers. The best iPhone games are the ones that are either casual enough to make control a non-issue or built from the ground up for the Apple-specific experience. It's something that developers learned the hard way when building games for the Nintendo DS, and later on the Wii. It's also something that developers came to terms with when working with Sony's SIXAXIS controller. Yet plenty of developers are attempting to apply their traditional game designs to Apple's devices. It's a shame to see those games continue to receive the spotlight just because they're graphically flashier than the good stuff.

     R.U.S.E.
     R.U.S.E.
So what is the iPad actually good for? I'm really not sure that it fills any need in my life. But let's focus on the gaming side of things here. The obvious first choice (and one that actually fits into an existing game genre) would be strategy games, real-time or otherwise. Though plenty of good and bad strategy games have appeared on the iPhone, the extra space either gives you a clearer or larger view of a battlefield. The multitouch pinch and swipe controls are a perfect fit for an RTS, though it's probably not solid enough for anything especially hardcore. I'd say if players are serious enough to discuss actions-per-minute for a game, it's probably not a great fit. So a version of Starcraft II might make sense... but the same SCII that will appear on PCs? Maybe not.

So far, my perfect example for an existing console or PC game that should make its way to the iPad is Ubisoft's RUSE, which is currently scheduled to hit later this year on PC, 360, and PS3. RUSE's pace, from what I've seen of it, would probably work fine in this environment. Also, well, Ubi was showing it off on a Microsoft Surface setup back at E3 last year. So obviously someone has already been thinking about how that game would work on a touchscreen. With Ubisoft cutting out Gameloft and starting to produce its own iPhone games (like Assassin's Creed II), I'll be shocked if this doesn't happen. Seriously, natural fit.

Once you get out of the strategy genre, though, things start to get a little hazy. My favorite iPhone games have been the simple ones. I'm all about card games, like Zynga's online poker game, word games like Word Ace or Bookworm, or puzzle games like KENKEN and CrossLogic. Those don't automatically benefit from a larger screen other than the obvious "well, now you can see better" thing.

I don't know, this whole thing feels like a case of mismanaged expectations. While the rumor mill always goes bananas for Apple stuff, this time it kicked into a previously unseen level of overdrive. But instead of all the wonderful and weird things people have been guessing for months, Apple delivered a bigger iPod Touch. If you need to get an Internet device that even your grandmother can understand, hey, great. But as someone who already stays up on all this tech stuff and plays games on machines actually built specifically for gaming, I'll stick with the real thing, thanks.

I have to agree with this. I have no idea what this would be useful for in normal everyday lives. Maybe I'm not the market for it, since I have no interest in it even from the rumors beforehand either. Also, trying to sell it as a gaming platform at all is a joke.

Just another example of how extremely stupid Apple is and how people are always over excited about their flashy overpriced products.

Can I use it to play checkers?

Every time the A$$le (see how that's clever?) zombies asked "Where's the iTablet?", I've thought, "And why do you care?"  I have never once in my life wanted a tablet computer. I use my computer for a thousand things and not one of them would be better served by a tablet interface.

It's interesting to see that once you look past the crust of breathless Apple fanboys being blown away by this thing and how cheap it is, most of the sentiment fits that of this article: "Who cares? What role does this thing play in my life?"

The thing is, I think there is an answer that most people aren't seeing. I'm an iPhone developer, and if you read some of the documentation around the latest App Store features they've added (specifically in-app transactions), you get the feel that they are very serious about trying to convince magazine companies to release apps.

Now today they demo the New York Times, and then show off the iBooks application. The conclusion is simple: they want the iPad to make paper obsolete. They hope this becomes the device that you do all your reading on - whether it be books, magazines, newspaper, or the web. The way I see myself using the iPad is: while eating breakfast. Just like a newspaper. Paper media is dying, and Apple wants to fill the gap.

It's not a bad plan, and though my own attitude is "wait and see", the more I think about it the more likely it seems that it could succeed in a big way. They're going head-to-head with the Kindle, and throwing in everything the iPhone has to offer as well.

There's just one crucial snag... it's crucial that this thing be a TERRIFIC web-browsing device... that's one of the few things it would do really well, and it fits into this "reading device" motif. The problem, as Jeff pointed out, is lack of Flash support. That is killer, and the device will be hobbled until that is in.

As for games? They'll show up on the platform, and will be bought and played. This is not a gaming platform first and foremost, and anyone who expected otherwise had some odd expectations. It is interesting to think of games that could take the best advantage of the platform's strengths though.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: DJ Max Technika is perfect for this thing.

That being said, I'm completely underwhelmed like most others that keep up on their gadgetry.

And that, right there, is key. Apple isn't targeting this at geeks like us who cling onto every new bit of hardware we can find, always keeping up to date about every hardware and software revision - they're targeting it at the general public. For crying out loud, this was on the front page of Norway's biggest newspaper today. Before it was even announced.

As @IQpierce said, Apple is trying to replace print media. They want you to use this thing for your newspapers, books and magazines. Add in multi-touch, the app store, video and music and you've got a winner.

I don't think many people were really expecting it to be gaming machine, but what does it do that makes it any use what-so-ever?  Like has been repeated many times, you can get much more powerful/useful laptops and netbooks for a fraction of the cost.  It honestly boggles my mind what purpose this machine serves to anyone.

I think people were more excited for the announcement than the actual product.  Seriously... just a bigger iPod touch?  Seeing all the stuff this thing can do just makes me want to run out to get an iPod touch instead.

The iPad has no place in the market.  It's too expensive to be a KIndle-alike and it's too function limited to be Netbook competitor.  It's too big to be a PDA and it's lack of Flash support will turn off end users and developers.  Weird product which has no real value.

If this thing works as advertised, this has the potential to completely revolutionize how normal people read and get their news, books or magazines. Not you or me - I know I have RSS feeds on my iPhone that easily allows me to catch up on the latest news every morning - but the common folk who don't have the knowledge to do that. People whose knowledge of computers don't extend beyond sending emails or opening a website.  If this works, you can have one hub for all your media, both print and digital.

My parents are just entering the age where they stop keeping up with technology. At the same time, more and more newspapers and magazines are shutting down, and my parents are getting increasingly frustrated to the point where they call me almost daily with some sort of question.  This product can fix all that - provided it works as advertised.

Personally I have absolutely no interest in this tablet. I do not see a use for it in my own life at all. However, I believe this has the potential to revolutionize mainstream media.

I don't see myself buying one any time soon, but one appealing thing here is the simplicity. Maybe it stands out to me more since I do tech support for a living, but no matter what computer someone uses these days, it seems like there's still a really good chance that the answer to "where did you save the file, ma?" is going to be " I don't know ". I like having options for where things get saved, but for someone like my mom, to whom her 5 or 6 year old laptop is still something of a mystery, the ability to know that anything you save is always, always, always going to be in one of 3 or four places, something like this could be really nice.
Again, not for me. at least not at this price, but there are people who will pay for the simplicity that neither the current incarnations of Windows or Mac OS can offer 100% of the time.

Seems like Apple have lost their creative flair. The iPad is indeed a larger iPod Touch from the looks of it and the functions they've advertised it to serve. Somewhat disappointing to see Apple are still not really taking a larger step into the gaming market or coming out with an all new product that doesn't feel in the least bit like a larger version of a previously released product.

I can't help but feel perhaps Apple's recent era of success is running out of steam. Perhaps Google will be there to move into position and provide us technology enthusiasts something more substantial to drool over.

With the amount of mainstream publicity this has gotten even before it's confirmation, yes, I believe common folk will drop $499 on one of these. If they work as advertised for books, internet browsing and video, that's enough for most people to buy one. It's the ultimate computer for dummies - which, sadly, is most of the worlds population.

I'm actually still really looking forward to this. I've got a few things besides gaming to look forward to, like easy access to books (i live in a crap town in a country where english language books aren't easily available) and also I'm thinking subscriptions to comicbooks are likey to happen. Heard rumors from a few months back that different comic book publishers were getting their hopes up regarding a possible tablet. So that's pretty fricken sweet. Again, something not readily available outside of cities, especially in crappy countries.  Yet another thing relates mostly to musicians, like on the iphone, you could get some pretty cool apps to control midi on a mac/pc and whatnot. Didn't make a whole lot of sense on a tiny surface like that, but on this device you're pretty much getting the equivalent of an open-ish source Lemur touchscreen controller, and the lemur costs many times what the ipad costs, so right there I'm saving a load of cash. Can't wait to see what the guys who made some of the OSC apps and also hexatone devs manage to squeeze out of a 10" display. Seriously, it's going to be a friggen gold mine for people interested in music and probably also video editing/VJ'ing.

Another thing, if the 3rd party hardware guys don't make a pressure sensitive stylus for this thing.. They are morons. It's got bluetooth to receive the pressure information, and a conductive tip takes care of the tracking. There's absolutely no reason not to make one. Perfect sketchpad, whammo.

Back to games, though. I don't really think we should count this thing out just yet. As the indie scene constantly proves, innovation is mostly in their hands. Big developers stick to what they know sells. One man operations go for what they feel like playing themselves, and I'm almost certain there'll be plenty of quirky weird games on this thing. Like Rolando for the iPhone/touch.

If i could make a suggestion, though... Isometric squad based tactical game with multiplayer.. controlling 4 dudes in realtime with quick access radial menus for each dude, waypointing and whatnot to set up ambushes.. Make it, I'll buy it. Haven't played a decent squad based game since Syndicate. That's right, fricken syndicate. When was that? 97?

Yeah, I've been waiting for this tablet for quite some time, and I've been thinking about what i want it to do... For quite some time.

I really can't figure out what that is for.  It's just like my iPod Touch except it can't fit in a pocket.  I think it'd be good for people who don't already have a laptop or an iPhone.  I just hope it's not the future of computers because how will I play Quake Live on a touch screen...

I basically agree with Jeff completely. It's just a big iPod touch, or a slightly crippled big iPhone. I already have an iPhone & a MacBook Pro, Apple has made it clear this is supposed to be a third pillar in that ecosystem...But I still don't get it. I mean, if I bought one, it'd be the 64GB WiFi model. That's probably going to clock in at around £450 (And that's a low-end estimate) over here in the UK. Sure, that's less than I paid for my 32GB Pay/Go iPhone 3GS, but I use the iPhone EVERY DAY and ALL THE TIME. It's indispensable. The MacBook Pro is relatively light, highly efficient mobile computer capable of all my web-surfing, some gaming and (in particular) the video editing and other production stuff I need to do. The iPad (And let's ignore the dumb name) just doesn't make a huge case for itself. There's no killer app. If they'd promised wide availability of Textbooks on the iBookstore, I'd have been interested for Uni. But nope, no sign of that. As it is, I could see using it to make notes in classes/lectures at University, some light web browsing and...Well that's about it really.

I'm intrigued . Since I do much of my web surfing from the comfy confines of my La-z-boy recliner, I'm usually using either the netbook on my lap or a laptop I hooked up to my big-screen HDTV. With that nice clear screen and blazing-fast performance, it'd be a nice way to watch some internet video (as long as it's not Flash-based, I guess - how stupid is that?)

Yeah, it's expensive, but I've never regretted getting an iPhone (and paying for the Giant Bomb app!) If they promise to port every Infinity Engine Bioware game to it (especially Planescape:Torment), I'm there day one.

I was hoping it would run on Mac OS X software.  I would pay another $500 for that.  So I'm saying NO to the iPad.

@DOUBLESHOCK: check the post i did on page 4. If you don't need any of the stuff i listed, then just don't buy one. Cause it's not for you.

Last year proved that both e-book readers and netbooks does have a market, and a growing one at that, this thing does both.

They didn't hype the portability all that much either. This is a device I'd probably just leave at home. How often do i read a newspaper or a book or browse the web outside of my house anyways? If i do, it would be at the desk in the office (hypothetically). This thing is clearly marketed at stuff you'd do at home. Leisure stuff.

Oooh I got so much stuff to do, I need a computer I can use while I'm doing all my important shit!
Oh look, now I'm doing my workout at the gym. 4th time this week, and i really wish i had a portable device that fills all my needs, cause i just love reading books and playing touch based games on the treadmill!
Aaah long day, now I'm in the shower, really wish there was a handheld device I could use in here, cause crosswords are awesome for keeping my mind off the soap allergy I've developed in my groin area..
Aaah, finally in bed, really wish there was some sort of device I could bring to bed with me for some light reading before I fall aslee.. heeey.. iPad..

Guess I've made my point already. If you don't have enough spare time to just kick your shoes off and hang out at home and whatnot, you really should remedy that situation before looking into consumer goods. And stop going to the gym, no one cares about your abs. Read a book!

Let's get real. This is a game site, most of the people in here are bums (no offense) and you got a lot of spare time. No need to play the "i got a life" act in here. Just buy it.. or don't...

I think the iPad is an amazing device, and that people who compare it to an iPod Touch are totally missing the point.  That said, I don't think it'll ever be a good gaming platform.

The iPad will be amazing because of the app store, productivity apps, creative endeavors, education, medical, aviation...all amazing areas the iPad are just perfect for.  It'll really be an entirely new platform (outside of laptops and smartphones) for personal computing.

That said, it isn't really gonna be a good gaming device.  Great great multimedia device, productivity device, and specialized market device.  Not really a device for the gaming market, I just don't want to play games on it any more than I want to play games on the iPhone (which I do love otherwise).   Also the incredibly cheap price point for the device is gonna be a huge boon for it.

CheapyD from CAG tweeted "iPass" on this subject. Strange thing is, this tablet makes me want to buy an iPhone. I have a T-Mobile family account though..hm...

@captroy:
Well, Flash is become increasingly less common (Thanks to the iphone and now this) so that should be too big a problem.

Plus anything on YouTube will be viewable via the non-Flash app for it.

You mean aside from the fact that you can get a netbook or similar devices for about the same price and they're far more capable?

  @iAmJohn: @orionw:
A netbook with a mandatory contract for 2 years with a 3G carrier you mean?  Yeah, subsidized products are cheaper, big surprise.

Yes $499 is extremely cheap, you realize people were expecting $800-900 for this device at the entry level price right?  It's just over half the expected price, that's cheap.  It's not supposed to replace laptops, it's not that niche.  Show me a laptop that can do what this device does for $499 and I'll agree that you're right.

Don't compare it to a netbook, it's not a netbook.  Nor is it a smartphone, it's actually a new niche.  Whether there is a market for that niche it'll have to be seen, but I think the app store is going to decide that.  I think we'll have to wait and see the product to come out.  But I think we can all agree that it isn't a gaming platform, and trying to market it as one just won't work.

I don't get what purpose this serves?

My Asus EEE 1005HA costs less, is just as "Bulky" (It's bigger, but like Jeff said you'll still need a bag for the iPad so the size diff is irrelevant). It does more. Doesn't look like a $15 digital photo frame from Big Lots and has a USB port/flash support. I don't see where someone would want an iPad over a netbook at this point.

It's a shame Apple dropped the ball hard on this. I imagine 3 revisions from now it'll be something more suitible though...

My MacBook is pretty damn portable, and has flash support.  I don't see why I would need something that is only slightly more portable, but less powerful.
