Ashton Kutcher & EA & CNN & Twitter Usher Armageddon

We're all doomed.

If CNN wins, I believe Ashton will have to eat that jaunty hat.
If CNN wins, I believe Ashton will have to eat that jaunty hat.
Though it's been around for a while, Twitter has become incredibly high-profile and incredibly divisive in the past few months. My original reaction to the idea of “microblogging” bordered on anaphylactic, but then it actually came in handy during E3 last year, allowing us to provide brief updates during the day when we didn't have the time to write. Eventually I fully got on-board with what Jeff succinctly describes as “a random IM that everyone can see.” It's a stupid idea, and stupid ideas are fine in the right hands and in small doses, but ever since Twitter hit the mainstream vernacular and the TV news fluff stories started pouring in with anchors shouting “I just don't GET this whole Twitter thing!” I knew we, as a society, were headed for trouble.

And trouble, it has arrived. In the form of, unsurprisingly, Ashton Kutcher. Earlier this week, the Punk'd'er challenged CNN--that's right, the Cable News Network--to see who could collect 1,000,000 followers on their Twitter account first. If he won, Kutcher promised to “ding-dong ditch” Ted Turner's house. That this Twitter race was enough of an event that I had read about it elsewhere was worrisome enough, but now EA has escalated the situation, offering a prize of every game EA publishes in 2009, as well as an appearance in The Sims 3, to whomever ends up being Kutcher's 1,000,000th follower. To be crystal clear here, there is now a significant bounty for people willing to pretend to be interested in what Ashton Kutcher has to say in 140 characters or less.

I don't think any of this absurdity would bother me if I thought that the Kutch was at all aware of its absurdity, but I can't shake the feeling that he's oblivious to any subtext, and just really, really wants the attention. That said, I can't fault anyone for getting into the mix now that EA is offering that prize. Times are tough, and apparently we're so starved for entertainment that we're paying attention to a popularity contest between a second-tier celebrity and the news.

Gross. I seem to be reading about Twitter everywhere now. Newspaper today was talking about "Local Politicians all aTwitter over new networking platform" or some such garbage. Yay. But how else can I keep up to date on what Alex Navarro and Wil Wheaton are up to?

I think Kutcher does recognize some of the absurdity of this, but not the suggestion that he has as big a voice as CNN.

I followed Ashton before and "unsubscribed" because his tweets were really inane and stupid. I may try to hop on again to be the 1,000,000th follower, but there are slim chances of that happening.

Also, "ding-dong-ditching" Ted Turner's house? Seriously? Good luck with that; running away from his front porch on his 100,000+ acre house really will be a surprise.

I don't understand why a regular person would have any use for  Twitter.  I mean, really... what are you going to Twitter about?

Oh oh, you're getting ready for work now?  That's great, good for you.  What's that?  You can't decide if you want Taco Bell or McDonald's for lunch?  I can't wait to hear how that turns out.  You've decided on Taco Bell?  Cool cool.

Thank God you've got a Twitter account so I can follow all of these exciting events.

I've been following Kutcher for a while now, and actually find him pretty interesting at times. Yeah, this stunt is goofy, but it's been pretty interesting watching some of the qik vids he and MrsKutcher post, particularly when they turn the tables on paparazzi and watch them scatter like the cockroaches they are.

As for the too cool kids that thing Twitter is totally dumb, well, most of the people around you probably think that commenting on a gaming site is just as pointless and dumb.

twitter seems to just be another fad in the art of self promotion.  it might have some viable uses like a myspace or blogs might.  but as often happens it's use is being twisted and perverted.

The funny thing is that CNN didn't even have control over the CNNbrk account in till today, it was made by some random dude... and they're making bets about it?

Twitter is a awkward site though. Took the Myspace "friends" phenomenon and ran with it. I use it as my weird way to vent when my IM butt buddies are away and no ones within my vicinity.

Shazbot, the rainbow jacket made me realize something!

In Mork and Mindy, the aliens grew younger as they grew older (the elders looked like kids).  I think Ashton Kutcher is actually a younger Mork, and the demi-moore is some sort of genetic modification of a Mindy clone...

Why does anyone twitter, at all? If you want to write a short blog, just write a short damn blog! Why must people use these strange applications that just restrict and limit, and makes stuff like this happen?

What happen to good ol' blog pages, people can write short entries there too!

Not very good at reading, are you? Ryan said why in the first part of this article. Rather than make a new Giant Bomb article for something as simple as, "This press conference is long. EA has announced ___________.", he can make a tweet about it. Also, let's say he wants to share a link to something that really has no purpose being on Giant Bomb. Twitter's good for that. Or Perhaps he wants to bring up a normal life issue (car broke down, need a new car) to the people that care about him? Twitter lets him tell all of them faster than email or calling.

The best use of Twitter is for anyone that actually does have something to talk about and not a lot of time to talk about it.

For the average person, that last part is all Twitter is good for. It's not for you to follow, it's for their family to follow. I follow my step dad's Twitter so I know what's going on "back home" without having to call about every stupid little thing. They're not going to call me because the dog's at the vet, but I'd still like to know.

For me: I don't want to fill up my blog with tons of little one paragraph posts. I also don't want to write a 5 paragraph post about every little thing I'd like to share. Twitter is good for that.

Er, no. There are no similarities between being friends with someone on MySpace to following someone on Twitter. MySpace did not invent becoming friends with someone on the internet, so I've no idea what your statement really means.

Either way, the one millionth follower shall be me. It shall be. Maybe.
