Battlefield Heroes Goes Live

EA and DICE's wonderfully stylized, free-to-play shooter gets a soft launch.

After a beta period that seemed about as long as the actual Great War, DICE and EA have finally made Battlefield Heroes live. It's kind of on the downlow at the moment, though, without any fanfare or press releases. Here's the official line from EA PR:

Battlefield Heroes is currently in soft launch. We'll have an official announcement soon.

I dabbled in the Battlefield Heroes beta a bit, and in addition to being pleasantly surprised by how sharp and easy-to-pick-up the action was, I think the art style and the general tone they've struck gives it a huge amount of personality. In a lot of ways, it's got a lot in common with Team Fortress 2, though with (presumably) less jars full of urine. Perhaps the most significant differentiator between the two is the fact that Battlefield Heroes is free-to-play, with EA making its money off advertising and microtransactions. My time with the live version of the game has been brief, but my snap impression is that there's a whole lot of fun to be had with this game for free. Since EA's not yet ready to start getting people pumped for Battlefield Heroes, I figured I'd lend a helping hand by reaching through your screen and punching you directly in the brain with this Saturday morning trailer. Once that gets your blood pumping, you can sign up to play Battlefield Heroes here , though keep in mind this is currently a Windows-only operation, and you'll need Internet Explorer or Firefox to get the party started.

Looks fun but I can't shake off how much it just looks like a poor man's TF2. I'm sure its not, I just keep thinking it doesn't look as pretty as TF2. Again, I know thats totally unfair.

@Kontrapunkt:

So far the only thing that you have to pay for is the look, the weapons are all in game points.  If they make you pay for weapon upgrades then it'd be a different story.

Battlefield Heroes is just like WoW battlegrounds with the addition of vehicles and manual aim. Heroes is a lot closer to the 'Arathi Basin' battleground, than it is to the core Battlefield games. Of course WoW battlegrounds themselves have taken their own fair share of inspiration from the Battlefield franchise. Back, when I was into WoW, I was really into the 'skillbar-style' kind of PvP. Arathi basin rocked and was addicitve like crack. I guess, that's also the experience, that the Heroes dev-team is shooting for.

I preffered Alterac Valley due to the NPC aspect which allowed me to still be a useful tank, as I was mostly into PVE. Still, this is Battlefield with a faster pace and more unlockables than previously, not an MMO. Surely players "peak" much faster and it becomes an even playing field? No?

Barely know anything about Heroes. Haven't kept up and wasn't in beta. Just played my first couple of hours right now. It's my first impression so far. It feels like it's targeted at the PvP only crowd in WoW. It has that MMOG vibe about it.

It's actually not as good as the hype makes it out to be. Try it once and never come back.

When you refer to unlockables, are you talking about the ability upgrades which you spend hero points on? When somebody says unlockables in a BF game, I tend to think of gadgets (2142 style).

Whatever you get over time, I've only played like twice :-P

I think I saw some people use gear I don't have (with any class) though, but maybe I'm wrong.

Edit: Yeah, there are more weapons, explosives, healing items, and other stuff to buy. I played some more, earned some silver coin thingies, you can buy better (more like different) weapons to suit your playing style. I could equip my commando with one of two new sniper rifles, one firing faster and the other having more recoil but more headshot damage, and I could replace his knife with some pistols, each better at a different distance. I got the latter rifle and a pistol but I hate it so I'll revert to knifing. You can only keep them for like a week or a month if (for a higher price) then you have to buy them again. You can also get new clothes but the free-to-play selections you can buy with game coins is limited, there's a larger variety you have to pay for (yeah, no thanks EA) and they're all just for show from what I see.

I also upgraded my sniping and knifing skills, once each. My knife now does damage over time or something, it's poisoned. Lol. Anyway, fun little chaotic game, its pace is nothing like standard Battlefield honestly.

Anyway, go to the store interface and check it out yourself :-)

Wow, call me when this and Quake Live work for Mac. Weird, since EA is one of the more apparent Mac supporters with Spore and Sims.

I've been in the beta for this since the very start. The game has only ever run once on every PC I've tried it on. A bunch of other people had the same issue. Still happens now that it's gone live. Awesome.

If Electronic Arts were to slap this on XBLA or PSN and charge $15 for it, I'd buy it.

It's actually funny how many things you could actually do with this game.

After playing more I see the MMO comparisons. Pressing a hotkey to enable stat-boosting skills that have a cooldown sure feels like one :-P

Not liking that vid, not into glitch videos. Show a nice full match with good camera direction and win me over :-)

I think it's cool that they are offering yet another version of the Battlefield IP.  Here at work, there have been plenty of times where kids wanted to play Battlefield 2, but it was a bit too complicated for them at times...what with the squad mechanic and the commander stuff and whatnot.  This should offer a simpler version of it while still allowing for some form of depth in customization and such.

It is a cool game, addictive, but it seems to lack diversity... so in the long run it will probably get boring.

But great to blow up some friends or strangers... :p

Vehicle physics and controls are a little off, they're not quite enjoyable to ride and have weird behaviour to collisions It's like they need more weight to them... I set up the 360 controller for the plane controls and it's still quite fiddly. I hope they'll improve that aspect at some point, but currently I'm having a lot of fun as mostly infantry, my commando is lvl 8! I prefer smaller matches. It's a fun game after all.

@damn: the other vid was showing exploits and such, that's what I meant with glitches.
