Capcom Pushes Three Out Of Q1 2010

Super Street Fighter IV, Monster Hunter Tri, and Lost Planet 2 head for high ground to avoid the Q1 flood.

Keep an eye out for her in... April, maybe? May-ish?
Keep an eye out for her in... April, maybe? May-ish?
You know, when publishers started pushing games out of the fourth quarter of 2009, it made some sense. It's the holiday season. It's crowded. And Modern Warfare 2 was poised to sell something like eight trillion copies, sucking up all monies previously earmarked for... well, just about anything else.

At least, that was what made sense back when publishers started pushing games. After seeing games like Borderlands move a couple million units in the face of stiff opposition, I was left wondering if too many games had moved out to Q1, effectively delaying the holiday bloodbath by three months instead of eliminating it entirely.

Looks like Capcom feels that the first quarter of 2010 has gotten way too crowded, so as part of a presentation on its next fiscal year, the company announced that Super Street Fighter IV, Lost Planet 2, and the domestic release of Monster Hunter Tri would be better off if they moved out past March 31. That's when the company's current fiscal year ends.

Interestingly, these delays aren't being blamed on the games not being ready. The reasons given include avoiding "the major titles that other companies plan to introduce in the 4th quarter." Keep in mind by "4th quarter" they mean "Q1 2010," as they're talking fiscalyearspeak.

No updated dates for the games were given in the report, only that they'd be released during the next fiscal year, starting on April 1 and trucking through to March 31, 2011. On top of that, the company cut its sales forecast for Dark Void, which is still on track to ship in January. Previously, the Dark Void forecast was 1.3 million units. Now, the company is thinking somewhere around 600,000. I ain't no businessman, but that sounds like a distinct lack of faith in Will Grey's Bermuda Triangle battle to me. Or, well, maybe that's just a more realistic approach to the game, considering that when that initial forecast was given, the first quarter of 2010 wasn't looking like a minefield packed full of big games.

If this keeps up, though, won't Q2 end up being just as packed? I'm all for having big games shipping all year long, but this stuff is kind of starting to get scary. Even scarier? I've just about got my mind wrapped around this whole "fiscal year/calendar year" thing. Business!!!!!

Not.  Unless you're glad you won't be overwhelmed by all these games you were planning to buy...

I hope this doesn't mean Dark Void is going to blow. This industry needs more fresh, interesting IPs.

I dont see a need to delay Super Street Fighter IV, people who want that game will buy it regardless, any time it comes out.

I'm fine with SSF4 being delayed, because I just bought SF4.

I'm really surprised at the Super Street Fighter 4 delay.  I don't know why, I just am.  This is kinda cool, though.  It's getting almost to the point where we're going to get good/high profile games on a more year-round basis.

The Street Fighter delay doesn't make much sense, its not like anything else in that quarter is really competing with it. The Lost Planet push is easier to understand. But I tend to think both of these delays are for the sake of refinement, especially with Lost Planet 2.

They better spend that time polishing the games or working on some network coding

Prediction: In 10 years time (if the world hasn't ended of course) our calenders will all be based around the fiscal year instead of our current one. Years will end in March, begin in April, and you will have to own stock in a company to get a calender at all.

That's what I'm thinking. Especially since it's a re-release to a certain extent. This has a built-in die-hard audience that is going to buy it when it comes out. Same thing with Monster Hunter. I totally understand moving LP2 though. It would probably fare better in the spring or early summer without all the competition

SSFIV was never really meant for Q1 anyway. "Spring" is hardly part of the first quarter.

I hope all the games are just constantly delayed and never get released because everybody things everybody is releasing their game eventually.

Wasn't Lost Planet 2 Capcom's flagship Q1 title? If anything, they should have kept that there or replaced it with Dark Void because from a business point of view, they probably will make more with Lost Planet 2 out there.

Of all the games Capcom has coming out, Dark Void looks the worst to me, tech-wise and story-wise..

So why are they so eager to push it? It's just going to be Bionic Commando 2010

Still pretty sure SSFIV is coming in April, since it falls into this "plan" to begin with. No worries, GOTY 2010 confirmed.

Yep, I'm in the same boat.  And especially true considering ME2 will swallow all my game time for at least a month come the 26th.

We lost alot of games this year because of the CoD: MW2-scare. Let's hope it doesn't become any worse than what Capcom has done now

This is stupid and makes me want to NOT buy Capcom games. Any hype for these games that I might have had just went to nil.

I was seriously considering MH Tri and LP2. Heck it's going to almost be a year from the JPN release of MH Tri by the time we get it now.

You have to be confident enough in your product that you want to go head to head. Especially with something like MH Tri which basically is an EMPTY genre right now on the Wii.
