Chrono Trigger on DS Nov. 25th

It may just be a port, but it sure beats scouring eBay for this hard-to-find time-hopping RPG classic.

Wait for the DS one.
Wait for the DS one.
Square Enix just dropped a release date--November 25--for the upcoming Nintendo DS port of Chrono Trigger, the beloved Super NES RPG which these days apparently fetches around $2,000 in factory-sealed form on eBay.

That's two thousand US dollars. You can pause a minute to let that sink in. Collectors be crazaaaay.

I don't know if I should be disappointed that Chrono isn't getting the full-3D-remake treatment, a la the recently released Final Fantasy IV (which I still intend to review if I can ever finish it; game is hard with a capital H), or feel fortunate that it's even coming out on the DS in any form. Probably some of both, but I'll lean toward the latter. Chrono Trigger is one of the best Japanese-style RPGs ever made and it's fully deserving of your attention whether you played it in its heyday or not. Heck, especially if you didn't.

The press release has a bullet-point list of features to look for in this port, almost all of which are things like "unparalleled storyline!" and "intriguing battle system!" and "inspiring musical score!" You can read that as "this is the SNES game running on the DS!" It does mention a new arena mode and new dungeons, which are requisite for a port like this, but even if those new additions don't amount to much, the core game is so good I can't get too worked up about this being a mere port. There's no price listed in the release, but you can guess it will probably be somewhere significantly south of two grand.

Personally, I would love it if the press release actually said, "This is the game from the Super Nintendo.  Seriously, it's the same.  There's some new stuff, but who cares?  It's freaking Chrono Trigger, people!  Just go buy it!"

I would have really liked to see it be remade in full 3D like FFIII and FFIV were on DS, but the fact that we're actually getting it at all on DS makes me very very happy.

I'll definitely be picking this one up, if only to show my love for a game I've beaten dozens of times.

Could someone suggest to them that they make it available on PSN/XBLA etc. as well?
I really don't want a DS but I'd like some of these retro Japanese RPG classics in console form.

Cool, I really loved the game but had to play it w/ emulation so it's great to see it coming in the US (and Europe probably for me) even if it's a straight port.

Can't wait !

About 2 years ago, i bought Chrono Trigger, AND A link to the past from a small secondhand shop for less then 10USD =) They clearly didn't know what they had their hands on! :D

I'm also getting this version of the game, it's simply amazing.

ill buy a DS for this, since most of my favorite RPGs are 16-bit style (golden sun, can I please get a sequal to that Nintendo?) Im going to guess the price will be 40 bucks, just like all of Square's other most recent DS games

I'm glad it's a straight up port.

And who in the HELL has a sealed copy of this game? If I had this game back in the day I'd be playing it, not leaving it in the wrapping.

Yes, if you haven't played CT before, you must pick up this edition... But for those that have beaten the SNES version multiple times probably won't be into an upgradeless port. IMO, the only killer app worth getting a DS strictly for is the KORG DS-10 software.

Damn Square for shutting down the development of the fan-made 3D CT remake from a few years ago. If this is all they had in mind for the franchise, I am extremely disappointed. Japanese publishers don't seem to know how to cater to their fans like they used to (either that or they don't care about what the West has to say about gaming).

I played through Chrono Trigger again in January. I beat it in a week with 50 hours of gameplay. collecting everything and all characters above level 80... that took so long i think i burned myself out. Im definatley buying it but im not sure ill be able to play through it if its the same thing. Hopefully I can buy it asap and beat it asap to write a review.

Ok, so I wanted to check the official site on this, and from my brief research, yes, Chrono Trigger DS is not much more than a port with some extra features.  How disappointing.  This was one of my favorite SNES games.  I want to say something along the lines of Square-Enix should stop milking and try to at least put forth some effort, but I won't (Oh, wait, I somewhat just did) since we've heard this rhetoric many times previous.

Anyway, if one has never played the game, CT:DS is probably gonna be a good purchase overall even though it's outdated by DS standards technically speaking.  It might even be a good purchase for a player who loved the original and wants a version that's portable.  I don't know.  Tough call for some, I bet.

I wouldn't be surprise if I buy it anyhoo.  It's that good.  Why not have another version?   ...something like that.  /sigh

You know, and I'll be severely chastised for saying this, but I care about this much, "this much" being the length of the word
"this".

I just don't see why everyone is balls to the walls about this game. And if it's the story or something readable...well, I'll read about it then.

Has a UK release been confirmed? Chrono Trigger is one of the best games I've never played, so if it comes out over here, it's a must-buy.

I haven't played CT before, so I am definatly looking forward to the DS release. But with everyone raving on, that it's the best game ever, I'm wondering if your memory is just messing with you? I glorify the stuff I played as a youth too ... but most likely those games are not even comparable to the games now.

I don't know if the minimal extra content justifies me purchasing this game again, which I own for PS1. I'd just play this game on my PSP instead (via PS1 emulation).

Not all that impressed/excited? It's an amazing game, one of the best RPG's ever created, but honestly, a straight port to a different nintendo system with nothing new just screams laziness.

Still own the cartridge for the SNES, still have the emulation on my mac, won't be picking this up for the DS. Better things to spend $40+ on.
