EA's New-IP Gambit Is Paying Off

Surprise! Sequels to Dead Space, Army of Two, BF: Bad Company, and even the unreleased Mirror's Edge are already on the way.

Get used to seeing her. Unless, of course, she dies at the end of the first game or something.
Get used to seeing her. Unless, of course, she dies at the end of the first game or something.
Shacknews collated some quotes from various EA reps--mainly Games label pres Frank Gibeau and Dead Space exec producer Glen Schofield, and mostly taken from a Variety story--about the success of the various new franchises the company has been pushing out the door this year.

As you might have noticed, EA has largely divested itself of its past devotion to the dark art of nonstop sequel production, in favor of trying a few new properties on for size. In the cases of Dead Space and Battlefield: Bad Company, that endeavor has yielded some damn good games. And even if Army of Two faltered a bit, it's certainly sold well enough thus far.

More importantly, the EA chaps are talking about the likelihood--scratch that, the certainty--of more games hitting the shelves under these particular franchise banners. It's not just in the cards, it's happening, like, for sure! You can expect Dead Space 2, Bad Company 2, and Army of Two...uh, 2 forthcoming from EA at some point. With better titles than those, hopefully.

Even Mirror's Edge, which isn't on shelves for another two weeks, is just the first of a planned trilogy. My fingers are crossed that the first game turns out OK enough to warrant two sequels.

The obvious thing would be to mock EA here for making some new franchises and then turning right around and serializing them, but you know, ragging on EA for its development practices is starting to feel both unjustified, and more than a little passé. So let's just close with this encouraging quote from Gibeau indicating this admirable trend will continue.

...we need to methodically add new IPs every year and start to change the balance of the portfolio away from being overweighted on sports and movie licenses and toward things like "The Sims..."

The Variety story has some other interesting tidbits about The New EA, including a Dead Space movie and the company's multimedia approach to marketing, so check that out if you're interested.

To be totally honest, Dead Space is shaping up to be the defining game of this generation for horror/action, and im only 4 chapters in. Hopefully Mirrors Edge and future EA titles can keep up this new level of quality. Props to EA for changing direction like this.

I have nothing against EA's seemingly unrelentless releases of sequels. However, they're coming awfully close to crossing the line into "whoring our games off for fast cash."

Dead Space movie?  No, no, no.  It would look like an Aliens ripoff.

Typical intellectual property progression:

Step 1: Make a kickass game
Step 2: Make a mediocre sequel
Step 3: Make a disappointing third game to make a "trilogy" out of it
Step 4: Make some mediocre spin-offs
Step 5: Make a flat out abomination of a movie from the game

Here's to hoping they don't rape Dead Space and Mirror's Edge in the same way.

I don't begrudge EA these sequels, provided this decision doesn't choke off the flow of new IPs. For me, what it boils down to is that I like new IPS and sequels, EA is a big publisher with a lot of talent at their disposal, they have no excuse not to do both.

I'm very excited to see an Ao2 sequel. Of course, you know it'll be called Army of Two: insert totally extreme subtitle here.

Yeah, Dead Space kindof got me scratching my head if it was actually an EA product.  I keep having to look on the box to double check the EA logo.  That game definitely has the typical feel of a horror film that can have a thousand sequels.  It sets up the universe pretty well where they could have the same situation happen anywhere in its future setting, heck even a few prequels.  I'm up for another dose of Dead Space.  Especially curious how the game play evolves between more upgradeable weaponry and more complex creatures that take some thinking to knock down.

And the cycle begins anew...

Still, as long as they keep bringing out new IP in addition to sequels, I don't mind. Begrudging publishers for sequels is kind of unfair because games cost a whole lot of money to make, and they want to make sure they have as many 'safe' games as they can so that they can branch out to newer stuff. As long as they give adequate development time and resources to all of their games, I don't see a problem with it.

Activision, on the other hand, has basically taken the banner from the old EA and is now pumping out a shitty Guitar Hero game every few months. Here's hoping they get the appropriate backlash, but it seems like the gaming populace has gotten so used to bagging on EA after all these years that they haven't quite responded to the shifting trend just yet.

Its good that EA is showing that new IPs can be successful so others can go ahead and do the same.  I dont think Battlefield bad Company can be considered a new IP especiall with Battlefield having been around for a while and that name itself sells games.  Army of Two was not amazing but it was a good start and hopefully they improve on it.
Some other ones that could be considered original in the sense of Bad comapny are Fallout 3, with that game being different from its predecessors and rock revolutions which brings a level of suckiness to the music genre we have never seen before.

Activision, the company that defined independant and creative development after the Atari days, has become evil.

I think we're getting close to full circle here people. Hopefully it starts up again and we'll have game development in hot tubs.

Mirrors Edge seems to be the one that will go bust.  It just feels way too much like Stuntman, and 1st person platforming has yet to ever play well without major forgiveness on collision detection.  It looks like every level is trial and error until you know when/where to jump after dying dozens of times, or you turn on some guided path that defeats the whole purpose.

It's basically Dragon's Lair meets Breakdown with parkour and until a demo is out, I can't see it any other way. I'm still very much in the camp of that game needed to be 3rd person.

Army of Two was a decent game, just a little too ambitious in design, and had a bit of "fuck it, release it anyway" stink on it.

So far my biggest disappointment from EA this year was Mercs 2.  It was barely worth playing through and I probably could've just rented it and saved $50.

Yeah, I won't complain about another Dead Space or Bad Company. Army of Two, on the other hand...No thanks.

Haven't played Dead Space yet but I saw that coming...looks good hopefully GameFly'll ship that one quick.  Bad Company was pretty sweet and I really hope they keep the same characters in the sequel.  I'd play through another Army of Two that was an okay game.  I'm kind of not too excited about Mirrors Edge...we'll see I'll probably rent it.

I loved Dead Space and Battlefield. Still playing a lot of burnout too. EA has definitely made a turn around recently.

I think Dead Space is pretty self-contained and hope if they have to make a sequel it's done right. Bad Company doesn't surprise me, but both Mirror's Edge and Army of Two sure do. I guess they're pretty happy with ME and AoT had a lot of great ideas that studio just couldn't close on. I think more time and maybe some more coin would go along way to making AoT a great series.

EA has definitely been diversifying. I can't wait for Bad Company 2! It should also be said that two of the new IPs in the EA universe : Battlefield Bad Company and Mirror's Edge are both made by DICE.  DICE FTW!
