LucasArts Officially Shuttered by Disney

The once mighty publisher of nearly all things Star Wars and Indiana Jones will be shifting to a "licensing" focused model.

The once promising looking Star Wars: 1313 will not continue development, it seems.
The once promising looking Star Wars: 1313 will not continue development, it seems.

Word surrounding LucasArts, the once dominant, but more recently dormant video game publishing and development arm of the house that Star Wars built, had not been good of late. After a strong showing at last year's E3 with an intriguing new Star Wars project, 1313, radio silence kicked in immediately following the sale of all things Lucasfilm to Disney late last year, and rumors began to swirl that the project was dead. That news has been all but confirmed, alongside news of the publisher's effective closing today, as announced by Disney in a brief statement.

"After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we've had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles."

LucasArts of the modern era hardly reflected its once dominant days as a publisher and development house. Apart from having total access to the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises--for each of which it produced countless memorable games--it also held court as one of the great producers of adventure games back in the 1990s, hosting burgeoning talents like Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert, who produced such classics as Grim Fandango and The Secret of Monkey Island.

Unfortunately, those days were largely in the past. Recent sequels in the Star Wars: Battlefront and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed franchises failed to gain much momentum; EA's Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO ended up going free-to-play inside of it's one year anniversary; and the dismal Star Wars: Kinect is all but assured to be LucasArts' publishing swan song. Still, the company at least showed signs of life with an impressive demo of Star Wars: 1313 to select press at last year's E3. Though it was exceptionally early in development, it showed a great deal of promise, and seemed like just the kind of thing that could have renewed a bit of interest in Star Wars video gaming in the next console generation. Sadly, that was not to be. Layoffs have been reported at LucasArts, and it seems the brand is set to be little more than a publishing stamp to be attached to licensed products.

We'll bring you more on this as it becomes available.

Quite a shame. I still remember playing tons of Dark Forces, Maniac Mansion, and Tie Fighter. Hope these somehow get licensed out.

You would think that an impressive demo like 1313 would give Lucasarts one more chance. Pretty crappy for them, and I wonder if Tim Schafer will publicly share his feelings about this.

This is shitty news. Star Wars 1313 looked like it could of been something special and now we won't see that game get released. But my heart goes out to those at LucasArts who won't be making anymore games at that studio.

I would like to personally pour on out for Star Wars Episode I Racer, one of my favorite games from my childhood. Now my dreams for either an HD reboot to Racer or a proper generation pod racer game will most likely not happen. :(

@spicyrichter: If you haven't noticed, Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been cancelled. The remaining episodes will be released in some obscure fashion later down the road.

Don't worry, let's just get in touch with MGM and they can put out 1313 as a Spaceballs licensed game instead.

(I wish I knew who made this, because it's brilliant. Just saw it making the Twitter rounds.)

Holy shit, that's amazing. My face right now is just :D

I was actually pretty excited when the purchase of LucasArts by Disney was announced as I was hoping they would actually do something with the old LucasArts stuff as Disney are pretty good at reselling your childhood to you over and over again. I know we've already seen HD versions of MI 1 and 2 but the artwork for Curse is gorgeous and I'm sure high res assets exist for it out there somewhere and would've loved to have seen a re-release of that as well as Grim Fandango which could quite easily be a thing as Brandon Dillon from Double Fine recompiled the code for XNA and has made the game run on the Xbox.

I can't even remember the last truly great Lucasarts game. It was either do this, spend a fuckass amount of money rebuilding the company with quality developers, or continue bleeding cash by spending millions and millions of dollars on mediocre games.

It is sad to see a legacy die but it has been suffering for years.

Lucasarts has been a hollow shell of a developer for a while now. Once they doubled down on Star Wars products, they just became victims of the law of diminishing returns. As impressive as 1313 looked on a technical stand-point, it was just going to be a new Uncharted. They may have officially shut down the studio, but that studio's soul died a long time ago. The real shame are the people out of jobs, so hopefully they can find new homes that won't have them constantly trying to polish new Stormtrooper models.

Gee, I sure hope this doesn't mean that Disney is going to abandon all the great, creative games in the LucasArts library and is just going to put out a ton of subpar Star Wars games over the next ten years.

If you detach yourself from the legacy aspect of the name, losing Lucas Arts isn't really that much of a catastrophe. I went and looked at the list of games they made (about 90% of it is, obviously, pandering Star Wars crap) and the last time I played a Lucas Arts game appears to have been almost twenty years ago.

Anyway, it'd be nice to see this happen to more of the enormous publishers. The industry needs a really good leveling so something fresh and good can come out of the ashes, instead of just more merging and playing it safe.

(Yes, employees, yadda yadda -- sympathy for those now possibly looking for jobs goes without saying.)

Maybe some good games will be made with LucasArts properties now.

Most LucasArts games have banked solely on the Star Wars franchise name to sell games. Force Unleashed 1, while it had a great story, had unremarkable gameplay and sold over 5 million copies. I think it is best they license out the franchises to competent devs and since it is Disney, I doubt they will do a SEGA and hand it to people like Gearbox.

That's too bad, 1313 was just about the only Star Wars product I've been interested in since Episode III.

Though if I had to trade 1313 for an Episode VII featuring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, I suppose it'd be worth it. Of course, my condolences go out to the people losing their jobs.

I can't believe they cancelled 1313. They are going to develop their own Star Wars games now right? Why not just rebrand 1313 with their own development studio and let those guys finish it?

I know the game was long from done, but throwing potential away isn't something I'd like to see as a gamer.

LucasArts is a shadow of its former self. For a while now it's just been a Star Wars meat grinder.

It's sad that a lot of people lose their jobs because of this, but they had to expect this at some stage. Disney needs to bring more creative energy into the teams similar to what Double Fine have done. Creating original IPs and pioneering new ideas was what LucasArts was all about.

As much as I'd like to say I'm sad.... What was the last decent lucasarts game? Republic Commando? and that was nearly if not a decade ago now, If THQ shut down while still making good games, I'm not shocked by this move from disney at all.

Seriously though, as many have stated, LA was a shell of its former self. I'm actually less sad about this than I was about the closing of Black Rock Studios many moons ago. With titles like Pure and Split/Second, they were actually doing something cool and well received.

We'll see how the LA IP is handled by the rest of Disney Interactive Studios. All Hail "The Mouse"!

So, does this mean no more SW games? I've heard from other sources they're leasing the license to other companies. Could that mean they will continue? Maybe it'll be good to have other creative people base a game in the Universe? Still, not cool Disney...

There hasn't been any hope for Battlefront 3 since around 2006. Once a project goes into development hell, there's almost 0% chance it's getting picked up again, so there was no hope to begin with.

No . . . No . . . I'm . . . looking at the list with 59 of their last 79 games being Star Wars games, including Angry Birds, Kinect, and cell phone Star Wars games. When it comes down to it, Lucas Arts was a Star Wars shop that occasionally stepped out and did something not related to Star wars (and sometimes, not related to Indiana Jones, either!).

The usual reasons. Eliminate competition while acquiring their valuable assets. Disney probably doesn't need another game dev group as much as they need the license to Star Wars games.

Jokes on them, George Lucas is prone to easily whoring out Star Wars, he might have just sold the rights. I can't believe studio that made Monkey Island and Grim Fandango is out of business because of a bunch of corporate assholes.

I wonder why they didn't just streamline the teams & then get them focus on some good stuff. I think all of their resources were diverted to that horrible MMO & that is the reason the other games that were released weren't very interesting. It would have been interesting if they had tried to direct their work towards something other than Star Wars. As far as I'm concerned, Star Wars has been done to death. Seems Star Trek isn't far behind in the games dept either.

I remember one interesting idea that came out in the early 00s in which somebody wanted to design a Trek game where you played the Borg & your goal was to assimilate other aliens (Postal In Spaaace?). That would have been interesting but it never got off the design boards.

All that aside, it's a shame they shut them down.

There will definitely be Star Wars games. They just won't be doing anything remotely risky. Remember when Monkey Island came back for a little while? Don't expect that kind of thing to ever happen again.

you literally just need to make a new battlefront game, it doesn't even have to be good. just kinda pretty and be on pc (not the psp god damn it). if its even equal to the other games in quality it will do well. it can't be that hard...

Considering the "new LucasArts" is Disney, who have a reputation for locking their valuable IPs in the "Disney vault," I wouldn't be too hopeful.
