Michael Fassbender Decides He Would Like to be In an Assassin's Creed Movie

The Prometheus and A Dangerous Method star will co-produce and feature in Ubisoft's eventual film adaptation of the video game series.

I'm sorry, what was I talking about? I got lost in your Fassbender death stare.
I'm sorry, what was I talking about? I got lost in your Fassbender death stare.

It's been a while since we heard about Ubisoft's little film studio project, which the video game publisher planned to use to independently fund films based on the company's various franchises. We also hadn't heard much about that Assassin's Creed movie idea in a while, at least not since it was first kicked around. Now we have updates on both of those things, and they come along with a massive, turgid Fassboner.

Yes, Michael Fassbender, the actor best known for his roles in films like Prometheus, X-Men: First Class, Inglourious Basterds, and Shame, has signed on with his own production company to co-produce and star in Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed adaptation, according to Variety. His DMC Films company will be working in direct tandem with Ubisoft Motion Pictures to raise capital. Sony had once been talked about as a potential distributor for the film, and may still be involved.

We roll our eyes when we talk about video game movies, and often with good reason. However, Fassbender's involvement in this particular adaptation does give one some reason to be excited. On top of being a top-flight actor, Fassbender's pretty choosy about his projects. Similarly, one gets the impression Ubisoft's being pretty protective about how this franchise is brought to the big screen, so who knows? We might even get a decent movie out of this. It'll depend heavily on who is hired to write and direct, of course, but this is as solid a starting point for a video game movie as I've ever read about.

Of course, we have absolutely no idea what portions of the AC mythology will be plundered for the screenplay, nor do we know which character Fassbender will be playing. Altair? Ezio? Probably not this new Connor guy, but hey, who knows? As long as Michael Fassbender is all, "Uh uh uh" with a hidden blade at some point, that's all that really matters, right?

I've only seen him in Inglourious Basterds, and the acting in that was solid all around, although people keep telling me I should start watching the X-Men and Alien movies.

I can't judge if this is a good fit or not, because I don't know who he's playing yet. I think he's too old for/I can't see him as Desmond or Ezio, though.

There is great potential for this movie. The thing is whether the movie will get made or not. There have been plenty of times that a celebrity was attached to video game movie adaptations and it never got made. Dwayne Johnson was mentioned for a Duke Nukem movie. There was that teaser trailer for a Splinter Cell movie in Chaos Theory. That was back in 2005. There was also Peter Jackson attached to direct a Halo movie and that went nowhere. What is Uwe Boll up to these days? He must have his next tax write off . . . sorry meant to say movie lined up.

I feel like the Assassin's Creed series is one of the most overrated, creatively bankrupt video game IPs to come out in a long time. Every game they make feels exactly the same to me, and it wasn't that amazing in the first place. They're going to milk this thing to death. Anyway, that's just how I feel about it.

This is great news for video game movies. Fassbender has so much talent as an actor, it's almost inhuman.

Why not Nolan North? He's not just a voice actor, at least that would create more consistency between the video game and the full feature movie

Because Michael Fassbender is better than Nolan North and provides an actual star to a genre of movie that suffers from a lack of such a thing.

I personally believe that Nolan North is better than Fassbender as an actor, but even if Fassbender were to have a protagonist's role in the film North should at least have a strong supportive role, given that he's the protagonist of the video game series.

I don't believe in putting people in a movie just for the sake for fan boners, unless it is for small cameo roles.

Nolan North doesn't pull people in, ask most people and they'll usually say who's Nolan North more than who's Michael Fassbender.

I feel like when the company who originally created the property is deeply involved and invested you end up with a better movie. Just look at the Marvel movies.

I agree. When you have pretty much all of human history to work with, it'd be disappointing if he plays someone we already know.

As long as they keep that stupid Animus thing out of it, it might be pretty good.

Of course I remember the buzz when everyone was saying the Hitman movie was going to be this crazy awesome project littered with respectable hollywood veterans serious about the subject matter, and not Timothy Olyphant with head-stubble, looking like some giant, grotesque baby.

Dunno what you guys like so much about Michael Fassbender. He was ok in Eden Lake and Inglourious Basterds, I liked him in Centurion and have yet to watch my A Dangerous Method DVD. He's ok, but he doesn't really stand out in my opinion. Maybe my female eyes are missing something.

Although I agree that he's not the everything and a side of fries that people make him out to be, he was easily the best thing about Prometheus, and he's also excellent in Hunger. He's a pretty top notch actor, so I'm mildly more optimistic about this movie than I was before.

(also to everyone saying the Prince of Persia movie was pretty alright; were we even watching the same movie? i hated it)

Unlike a lot of games, Assassin's Creed actually has a story that might translate well to the movie screen.  It could end up being like another Matrix trilogy, but hopefully better.

You haven't watched his best performances! Watch Hunger, it's absolutely mesmerising and Shame, although the film is quite as good Fassbender carries it.
