Monday Night Combat Just Got Super-er

Uber Entertainment is bringing Monday Night Combat to the PC as a free-to-play title.

If you were one of the many players that helped make Monday Night Combat a surprise hit upon its release on Xbox Live Arcade last year, you may find yourself interested in developer Uber Entertainment's latest project: Super Monday Night Combat for the PC.

More championship belts in everything, please.
More championship belts in everything, please.

The primary difference in this iteration of Monday Night Combat is that it's a free-to-play title. Anyone who downloads it will be able to play the breadth of the game for precisely zero dollars. Like other FTP titles, Uber plans to make its revenue off microtransactions for items and specific content updates.

There will be changes to the gameplay, as well. The team-based shooter will move from a six-on-six model to five-on-five, and include an all-new leveling system, designed to improve players beyond the marginal scope of the skill upgrades found in the Xbox 360 version. New environments, characters, and other upgrades will also be included.

There is a full, lengthy preview of Super Monday Night Combat up over at Kotaku, if you're into that sort of thing. Considering the success of other FTP titles like League of Legends and the recently transitioned Team Fortress 2, this seems like a wise, competitive move from Uber. What say you, Monday Night Combat fans? Will you check out this updated version on your PC? Or are you perfectly happy with the XBLA version?

F2P = Free to play.

FTP = File transfer protocol.

Come on guys, standardize this before the genre gets out of hand.

This is a great idea, I think. The TF2 allusions are there anyways, so a similar setup is probably good. However, it should be noted that a large part of TF2's success is on the basis that it is the heel for Steam and is leveraged by those TF2 bonus items that come from other games that release for Steam.

So I don't know, sounds good maybe, but business-wise we'll have to see how it works out in practice.

I played the 360 demo a few times and enjoyed it but I never got around to buying it. I would love to jump in whenever I get a decent bandwidth cap that can allow me to download a game without having to shut my internet off for the next few days.

It's an ok game but the floaty controls ruined it for me. Hope this helps them out because everything else was high quality compared to the budget price.

Not liking the change from 6v6 to 5v5. If anything I thought MNC could have benefited from larger maps and more players, not less.

Will obviously be a weaker profit than TF2's or LoL's, but if they have the code there and are basically releasing a revamped version, what's the harm?

I'll probably download it.

Monday Night Combat on the PC is pretty dead aside from a group of people that play Sniper/Assassin and just dominate every round regardless of new players, etc. so I wouldn't mind some kind of soft reset for newer players to be able to jump in and play.

Bring it on i'm digging the new wave of free multiplayer games. I mostly play single player games and only really ever touch multiplayer games when my friends get addicted then I only last a few weeks before I move on so its nice that I'll be able to join in without spending the cash. Also they really need to put league of legends on steam sometime ...

Wait, something started on the Xbox 360 and came to the PC is now getting more love on the PC than the console? I've seen this before, usually means current gen consoles are finally outdated enough for PC to show it's muscle and reign supreme again :D least till next gen. That or this F2P phenomenon on the PC is finally making it more lucrative to publishers/developers.

Yes, this makes me sad. That game is awesome but I don't often have time play it. Now there won't be a player base (however small) there waiting for me.

Oh well, I'll certainly play Super MNC.

I don't like this one bit. They basically took a look around and said "Hey, that League of Legends is popular, lets destroy what people liked about out game and just copy that one!"

I thought of that also. I'd like to know if Uber is going to offer PC players who bought MNC already anything in SMNC. Probably not, but one can hope right?

Still, MNC is one of the most underrated titles I've played in recent years. I hope this new F2P iteration of the game does super for them (pun intended, sorry!).

The lack of persistent leveling or at least customization was my only complaint about MNC, so this looks like it might be fun. I just hope they stick to the good style of free to play where the micro transactions are either only cosmetic or reasonably accessible without being forced tok pay.

Monday Night Combat's playerbase isn't exactly thriving, so I'm all for this. I hope this will help people realize that MNC is basically a MOBA game.

Slightly miffed because I just bought MNC not too long ago on Steam.  On the other hand I only paid $3 for it so I cant be TOO upset.  :-)
