New Zune Hardware Confirmed, Will Connect To Xbox

More details on how the new Zune HD and the Xbox 360 will work together at E3 next week.

Microsoft has confirmed the existence of the Zune HD, a new version of its multimedia audio/video playback... thing. The new HD model will feature an OLED display, an HDMI out for viewing media on your TV, and support for HD Radio.

But the real news, at least as it pertains to the gaming world is that the Zune Marketplace for video is going to make its way to the Xbox 360 dashboard, essentially replacing the current Xbox Live video Marketplace in North America and parts of Europe. How will it be different than the existing service? It'll probably have a fat Zune logo on it. After all, the press release does specify that "Zune will occupy the first slot within the Xbox user interface in the Xbox LIVE Video Marketplace, exposing the Zune brand experience to millions of new consumers for the first time." As if the dashboard the 360 has now isn't already way, way over-branded.

For any other differences, we'll probably have to wait and see what Microsoft has to say about this newfound device synergy next Monday at its pre-E3 press conference.

The fucking hell you say.  There is nothing over-rated about Apple product. It's stable & it works & the cost, at least for an iPod, is competitively priced.  OS X is above & beyond klunky Windoze, which you can largely blame on Mr. Softy outsourcing all the OS programming to India, hence the 3rd-world-ishness look & feel of the Windows OS.

The Zune can't touch the iPod & it still can't.  All Mr. Softy does is throw more features into the next device to try & snag you to buy one.  You should try to learn what quality is.  Mr. Softy isn't a hair on Apple's ass when it comes to it.  And I'm betting these next generation Zunes are going to be bug-addled with 3 year replacement warranties tacked on.

I don't know why the Zune is getting a lot of hype here, it isn't a game system or portable game system.  Shouldn't this be under Off Topic? These aren't the droids you are looking for.

For listening to music, my 5G iPod with RockBox is probably better.

Can anybody say graphic equalizer? Sure it's only 5-band but it's adjustable to different bands and +/-20dB

I'd say FLAC too but I guess Zune supports WMA Lossless.

@Metamorphic: for real dude, or when the iPod gets an FM tuner out of the box, has the ability to do a wireless sync with your computer and gets a screen as large as a Zune....

Definitely looking at the competition to replace my current iPod. Apple's focusing on screenless rubbish like the Shuffle and letting it's flagship, the Classic, lag behind in the tech department.

I've been interested in a Zune for awhile now, so this news is a good read. The specs sound pretty good and the design is something I like (though I'd also want to see it in person first). For current Zune owners: are you able to also use the Zune as an external HDD if you wish? That was one feature I really liked on my iPod that I read you couldn't do on Zune (unless you used custom firmware).

Can't wait for more information at E3!

I love my Zune 80, and while it's got 40 gigs of music on it, I use it almost exclusively for podcasts.  So I hope I don't have to dig into the "more" section of the interface to get to what matters -- some customization would be nice.

Its stable it works, and the cost...what you mean? apple products aremore expensive then most other products, Computers over priced for the equivilent in a pc, the zune costs the same as an ipod so i dont know what your geting that from the ipod is no where near competiviely priced.

While it is a nice read... for me the Zune brand has not yet given birth in Australia... nor has the video marketplace.  So for me again it is a nice read but only a read nonetheless.

As much as I like what I'm seeing from this new Zune...I have a feeling it won't be supported like the iPhone/iPod Touch and can't see myself buying this over an iPod Touch or the rumored PSP Go! (which is rumored to feature a touch screen as well).

Its probably going to have a max capacity of 32GB which isn't enough to make me drop my 120GB Zune atm. Seeing as I have 30GB of music alone, which is constantly growing thanks to Spotify. Looks awesome though. Hopefully its touch screen will be as good as the itouch and not like samsung or LGs touch screens...which are dire.

Eveybody knows that a near future 32/64gb iPhone is the way to go, I can't live anymore carrying my old Motorola V3, my DS Lite and my 8gb ipod nano , it's time for a unified paradigm. Besides I wan't an excuse to start learning objective-c/cocoa and programming an iphone app is the best excuse. Do we really want to trust Microsoft after the RROD problems and the last Zune glitches?, let's make a safe investment people, stay away from Microsoft till you know if your device really is not going to die

The iPhone is a piece of shit phone addon to a pretty damn cool PDA. Stick with your motorola. The iPhone as a games platform is incredibly limited. Stick with your DS. Unified paradigm my ass. It's a cool device that is inherently (and ironically) limited by its software-over-hardware design and archaic programming language.

But, you know, jump in. Go compete with iFart or the other millions of bullshit idiocy on the platform, while real apps like the GiantBomb app stagnates in the admission process. Ambition is actively punished by Apple. If your goal is to make $$$, that's one hell of a dead tree to bark at.

zune glitches as in plural ohhhhh you mean the one zune glitch that was restricted to solely the first generation of 30 gig zunes. other then that the zune has had no more major problems then the ipod line.

what the fuck is up with Zune detractors none of them have any proof that the zune doesn't work or is a bad product the most they can bring up is RROD on the 360 a completely different product, come up with some proof or something, Zunes are no more problematic then ipods are and the ipod is only popular because for the longest time it was the only decent mp3 out there, stop bringing up problems on the 360 and try to apply them to the zune, if you knew any thing you'd lnow that the 360 is the first hardware out of microsoft with any true major problems in a worldwide scene, their mice and keyboards, webcams and headsets work great and are reliable.

@Sunjammer: I never said the Iphone was a better gaming platform than the DS but I certainly could carry an Iphone + DS when I have a DS game on schedule to play or just take the IPhone if I am not in the mood of playing anything. I don't want to be an Iphone developer, I am studying Software Engineering so being a "programmer" is not my goal. They are in fact reliable but Microsoft has proofed that they can rush the development of their hardware and release it knowing that is not working well, scratched disks sounds in your head?, they have admitted they knew that, the same with the RROD, why they released the 360 despite of that problems?, TO FUCK SONY, did they care if doing that they were FUCKING CUSTOMERS?, NO, can you say that they will not do it again to gain more market with the Zune brand???. I currently do have a Zune 80, one of the very few people outside of the US to probably own a Zune... But from my experiences the Zune is far better than any of the 'classic' iPod line. The audio quality is better than my Sound Blaster X-Fi can muster, its got a great interface as swiping up and down makes far more sense than going around in a circle with the click wheel.

But iPod Touch/iPhone vs Zune is currently apples and oranges. But the Zune HD might change all that depending on just how powerful the hardware is, what it can do and what we just don't know about yet.

Stick XNA/XBLA games on here and they'll be onto a winner...

I find this very hard to believe. Check your speaker config, disable stupid effects and CMSS or whatever it's called nowadays. It should sound no different, especially when you consider that both the Zune and the X-Fi use Wolfson DACs.

The wheel vs the slider is a matter of personal preference, but the iphone/ipod touch use sliding rather than the wheel, and jog wheels are pretty standard in the world of video/audio editing in which Apple have a lot of experience.

I'm happy to see some competition from Microsoft, but they have a long way to go to match Apple's dominance of this market. Honestly my lasting impression of Zune owners is how damn angry or passive aggressive they are the whole time, always on the damn defensive about their choice of portable media player. That is not a community I want to be part of. I'm happy being part of the community of self satisfied smug bastards who own iPhones. C'est la vie.

um...of course the iphone and ipod touch use pure touch, the ipod use a touch sensitive circle, the 2nd generation zunes use basically the same type of touch senstive squaricle.

It's a nice looking piece of hardware, but knowing what little I do about the device as of this post, I see no reason to replace my Ipod Video.  I'd like to know if it has a touch screen and a planned "apps" store.  If the latter is true, I wonder how that will integrate with XBL.

I am very disappointed by the fact that they're not doing a 120GB version of this device. Also, I wonder if they'll still use the same audio hardware because the audio on the Zune80 is very good.

A.) All portable media requires protection from scratches & dings. Hell anything does. Why would you not want to protect your investment?

B.) "Apple products are more expensive than other products" <---Gotta call Bullshit on that one. All you have to do is go compare a Dell computer to an Apple computer using their menus.  The Apple offers higher technology for the same price or a few hundred more. You're not getting great on the Dell.  Does Dell offer dual quad-core that can support 4 graphics cards?  No.  Even if you built your own box, the only dual quad core out there is Skulltrails & it doesn't work with multiple video cards across both cores, making it useless.

Obviously you haven't done any comparison pricing between Apple & the other big PC vendors such as Dell or you would be able to figure out that Apple computers are not any different. Although you do get OS X in 64-bit by default..none of that 32-bit crap.

C.)  OS X uses BSD Unix on the backend. It's already American-made by the point that the foundation of the OS is UNIX!  It's virus free, you don't have to run anti-virus & worry about trojans & other bullshit like you do with Windows.  Windows makes people's careers by creating tons of jobs to support Microsoft & any products that run on it.  Why? Because it's shitty. Period.  UNIX is a real OS. OS X uses UNIX. Therefore the logical conclusion is that OS X is a real OS.  OS X comes with a backup system called Time Machine. What does WIndows have? Nothing, you gotta pay extra for somebody else's tools.  OS X has Spaces, multiple desktops.  What does Windows have?  Nothing, maybe if you upgrade to Vista it'll have something.   I can run Windows via Bootcamp or VMware Fusion (I use Fusion btw). I have XP 64-bit & Vista Ultimate 64-bit running in VMs on my Mac.  Can a Windows OS with any 3rd party tools run OS X in a VM?  Hell no. 

The bottomline is that if you go with Apple, you get the best of all worlds.  One of these days when you release your white-knuckled grip on your cash, you will come to realize that owning a Mac has more value than sitting on your money, pirating software under Windows, & spending countless hours troubleshooting Windows problems.  I still have my PCs for games since it's still the dominating platform. Also, my Mac is a laptop so it's not meant for playing high powered games, although it runs Spore without any issues. :)

Buy or try a Mac. You'll like it.

I've got to say, the HD Radio is actually pretty attractive. It's the one thing iPods don't have, and could be defining characteristic for the Zune HD. I'll be interested to see what the full interaction is with Live.

I hope this means that all zune store bought vids and music will also play through the 360 (and vice-versa).  It's the one thing that makes me hesitate from buying them from either store; the whole fact that I have to choose between a portable Zune version (Low-res) and a 360 version (High-res) that I can't take with me.  I love my Zune but I find it hard to understand why I can't watch my purchased tv shows on both Microsoft controlled devices.  If this changes I'll finally have a reason to upgrade my 30GB Zune!

P.S.  The New Zune looks really cool. :^)

P.P.S. Lind_L_Taylor...Stop trying to start a flame war.  Not all people like Apple products for various reason.  And Mac PCs do generally cost more than Windows PCs.  It's a fact of life.  deal with it.

The audio quality can't be better than your sound card.  Probably your sound card is hooked to some shitty speakers?

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about with the HD Radio feature. I don't listen to the radio that often unless its NPR news & how much quality do you need when listening to a news report?  Although I am curious about iPod song tagging with HD Radios for car stereo systems.

There isn't anything that good that plays on the radio these days though. I listen to NPR news but what good is that in HD?  I mean really, the best place for HD Radio is in the car.  I've had my iRiver 40G media player for the last 6 years & it has a working radio system. I've never used it.  If I'm at home, I can listen to radio over the internet, my stereo, or watch the news or music on TV, DVD, etc.  If I'm at work, I can read the news on the Internet...listening to a radio station play the same tunes every hour for 8 hours a day gets old quick.  If I'm in the car, I use the car stereo.  Unless the Radio stations improve quality of content in HD, then it's not very useful.

Actually the HD radio subchannels in my area play some very interesting and varied music compared to their mass appeal pop radio counterparts.  HD radio is actually quite cool!

5.So let me get tihs straight because Windows doesn't run OSX in VM *because apple likely won't let them access to all the code needed for it* it means its inferior? as for that Isn't it more telling that one needs to run virtual systems of other OS's to get things done on a MAC because OSx cant do it it self?

6.My new laptop running Vista home premium 64bit hasn't had much of a problem since boot up all together in the month and a half or so since i got it its been running consistantly with no shut down for about half that month and a half with restarts happening cause of updates and me manually turning it off for a long trip....6.1 Yes we all know mac users don't pirate any thing they are upstanding citizens.

P.S: windows has its problems, but its still far better then macs and OS x in my opinion.

Why do you have your Zune hooked to the sound system? That completely misses the point of a portable device.  I use TVersity on my PC & simply point the 360 to it.  My PC can hold a lot more music than a portable player can including lossless formats.  Which Zune do you have?  Does it have 120G of space like my iPod classic?  Does it play AAC files?  Or is the Zune still stuck in last-generation MP3 format or shitty weema?

The Zune is rated second place?  You've got to be kidding.  Where is second?  10% of marketshare vs Apple's 90%? 

I guess you like being in second place, second best, & preferring second rate products?  There is nothing wrong with the iPod...I wonder why you didn't buy one & just went with the best product the market has to offer at this date & this time...not 2-5 years down the road where you can hope & pray that the Zune will somehow become a "market leader"...(I'm stifling laughter at the thought of it).
