343 Industries will be picking up the Halo series where developer Bungie left off following the release of Halo: Reach. But according to a rumor making the rounds, 343's first Halo game won't be this follow-up we're all expecting to see. Instead, it'll be a rerelease of Halo: Combat Evolved, rendered in glorious HD courtesy of the Reach engine. And the date we'll see it according to this rumor? Sometime in 2011, which means it could arrive in November, just in time for this monumental game's 10-year anniversary.
This rumor is brought to us by the latest issue of Games Master magazine, which cites "industry chatter" as its source (via CVG). No other details were apparently provided.
== TEASER ==One big problem with this rumor, as Eurogamer points out, is that Microsoft Games Studios executive Phil Spencer doesn't seem too keen on HD rereleases. In an interview with IGN from earlier this October, Spencer said that the "thought of re-doing a bunch of things is probably difficult to just weave into the overall portfolio."
He added that while he doesn't spend much time thinking about this subject, "there could be possibilities" for remakes from MGS in the future if customers see some sort of value in the idea. Ironically, it seems like IGN asked Spencer for his take on this subject by offering Halo: CE and Halo 2 as examples of hypothetical HD rereleases.
It seems like they are just shitting this out to keep Halo in our minds. I thought that 343's game was getting delayed and GW3 was getting the big holiday release in 2011 instead of Halo.
I would be all for this... assuming that they don't mess with the weapons and keep the original Halo:CE artificial intelligence... the AI is Reach was frickin' awful and absolutely no fun to play against
When I first read the headline, I was not feeling right in the head and at first mixed up 343 Industries with 38 Studios. When I realized my mistake, I was immediately less interested.
This actually seems like a pretty good idea. It's a good way to get 343 into the swing of making Halo games, without having the pressure or making a full-blown new title. That, and a Halo: CE remake is guaranteed to sell well.
@SpikeSpiegel: Do you even remembered how overpowered the pistol was? You could snipe people from across the map with that thing. 3 headshots is a kill!
I would buy the fucking shit out of this. As I was playing Reach and seeing things lead up to Halo: CE I got to thinking how I'd love to see them remake it for current gen systems. And lookie-dookie here!
While I'd welcome a CE redux, I would really much prefer an extention of Master Cheif's story, ala ending of Halo 3. And there's no way that's not in the works, despite these rumors. This sounds bogus to me on it's face anyway.

Only everyone that has ever played Halo: CE's multiplayer and has been bitching that it's not what they're getting in every subsequent release... so yeah, probably a lot of people.
That would be a brilliant move. I think a remake of Halo 2 is pushing it, but the 10 year anniversary would be a perfect time to release Combat Evolved on a new engine with today's consoles. I probably wouldn't buy it, but I'm personally burnt out on FPS games, likely for life. Though I'd be interested in seeing that story again in today's standards of graphics
Though I too would like to know why people suddenly hate the Reach engine.. Reach looked pretty effing good on this side of the monitor, and very stylized. To me, Reach felt like it captured the same style and feeling as Combat Evolved way more than 2 or 3 ever did.
Oh well.. haters gonna hate. Like it or not, Halo's been here for a decade, and an HD remake of the original is a perfect 10-year anniversary project. It's also a good testing pool for a developer taking on the Halo reins for the first time(?).
It's a good idea, there are likely a lot of people that have never played the original, and it'd be kind neat for them to see the orgins of everything.

How awesome would it be with an MGS HD remake though? Revisiting Outer Heaven in 4 was a good taste of it.
I'd be very, very disappointed if this was the case instead of an all-new game (even if it was yet another prequel set during the Human-Covenant War), but I'd be lying to myself if I said I wouldn't buy it. Halo 1 was my favourite game in the series, and Reach had the best gameplay of the modern games.

Halo 2 is the only one not on 360, although it is backwards compatible. Halo: CE is an Xbox Original that can be downloaded to the hard drive. I'd much rather have a Halo 2 XBLA release for that reason, so I can get rid of that disc already.
