Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions First Look

We see Spidey's pan-dimensional adventure in person for the first time.

No Caption Provided
The quality of Activision's Spider-Man games has been, let's charitably say, varied. The movie-based games suffered from pitfalls typical to movie-based games, though I'll admit to having some conditional fondness for 2008's Web of Shadows, the first game (I felt) to really nail the freewheeling chaos of Spidey's particular brand of urban traversal, which also featured some appropriately zippy combat. Coming later this year from Activision workhorse studio Beenox is Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, which promises to apply some of the lessons learned from Web of Shadows, while also acknowledging several of the approaches that Marvel has taken to the web-slinger over the years.

If you've seen the first trailer for Shattered Dimensions, which dropped earlier this week, you should already have a basic understanding of the game's big hook, which hinges on leaping between different Marvel sub-universes, each with its own unique take on Spider-Man. All told you'll play as four different Spider-Men, two of which have been revealed thus far. There's Amazing Spider-Man, which is your most standard of the bunch--the vivid red-and-blue suit, the wiseacre attitude, and a telltale cel-shaded art style that nods towards his colorful comic-book roots. More intriguing is Noir Spider-Man, a grim and gritty pre-war take on the web-slinger whose darker tone makes comparisons to currently fashionable flavor of the Bat-man somewhat justified. Some information concerning preorders leaked out suggesting that Spider-Man 2099 may be one of the other Spider-Men you'll play as, though Activision isn't saying anything official either way. Either way, that still leaves a fourth Spider-Man as a mystery, though my favorite candidates at the moment are Spider-Ham and Marvel Zombies Spider-Man. Longshots both, but a man can dream, can't he?

In addition to featuring four distinctive visual styles, each Spider-Man will feature a unique voice actor, with Activision currently confirming that Christopher Daniel Barnes, the voice of Spider-Man from Fox's mid-1990s Spider-Man cartoon, will provide the pipes for Noir Spider-Man. The differences between the four heroes, though, aren't just skin-deep. You can expect a certain amount of consistency within the fundamental movement and combat systems between Spider-Men, though each will also come with a distinct combat focus. Amazing Spider-Man, for example, will focus more on web-based attacks, letting you slow down or disarm enemies with your web-shooters, as well as fabricate concussive weapons with your webbing on the fly. Noir Spider-Man will still have web-spinners for traversal purposes, though that Spider-Man will be more about stealth, sticking to the shadows and silently subduing foes from behind.

No Caption Provided
Written with an assist from Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott, Shattered Dimensions' story jumps off with the destruction of a mystical artifact called the Tablet of Order and Chaos, an event that compels our four Spider-Men to work towards the same goal--hunting down the villains that have since gotten ahold of these shards and restoring order to the multiverse. The game will be presented in a three-act structure, with every act featuring a chapter that focuses on one of the four Spider-Men involved, though you'll be able to approach the chapters within each act in whatever order you desire. Specifics weren't given, but there will be some kind of persistent upgrade system that will carry between all four Spideys, affording a certain level of combat consistency.

According to Activision, the big feedback they got from Web of Shadows was that people enjoyed the boss fights, but felt like there was too much padding between those encounters. This means two things for Shattered Dimensions: gone is the open-world format--something I'm personally a little sad to see go, particularly after Web of Shadows handled it with such panache--replaced with a smaller, level-based design. It also means that you can expect a greater number of Spidey villains to pop up in the game, and during my brief demo of the game, I saw Spidey take on both Kraven the Hunter and Hammerhead--the former as Amazing Spider-Man, the latter as Noir Spider-Man. During the Kraven fight, I got to see more of the first-person combat that was shown fleetingly in that initial trailer. It's something that will be triggered automatically at a specific point during a boss encounter, and the folks at Activision weren't shy about drawing comparisons to Punch-Out!!, which makes sense based on what I saw, which was a raw, up-close, two-fisted slugfest that showed off Kraven's character model in brutal detail.

The actual content of the demo of Shattered Dimensions I received was quite rough, as should be expected from an early, work-in-progress version of a game. I'm thoroughly intrigued by the premise, and definitely saw some potential. With the game's scheduled fall 2010 release, and with both E3 and San Diego Comic-Con between now and then, it's a safe bet you'll be hearing more about Shattered Dimensions at both of those events.

I don't think that Marvel Zombie Spider-Man is that much of a long shot. I can't think of any other Spider-Man variation that would make sense.

I'm more than a little sad to see this go. The traversal was the best part of the spidey games.

I'm disappointed to see the open world stuff go, but if it makes for a better game, then so be it.

Every game doesn't need to be a sandbox.

Kind of a bummer to see the open world detail go, as I think that's the only reason I liked Spider-man 2. And let me tell you, I played a bunch of Spider-man 2. Still, Arkham Asylum was pretty good, maybe they got a bigger budget to work with now that suddenly a Comic Book Game doesn't have to be tied to a movie to sell well. Would that be something they'd do?

Looking forward to see if it's any good. That said, I was sorta scared away from Spider-man games when Spider-man 3 came out, and a focus on combat has done nothing to get me back in. But still, I'm really interested in this. Maybe if it doesn't try for a dumb combo system and instead tries for a more Arkham Asylum type combat and stealth system it'll be worth 60$.

Considering Activision trademarked a Spider-Man game based on Marvel Zombies back in 2008, I wouldn't be surprised if Zombie Spider-Man showed up here, though it might be too gruesome for a T.  It's most likely either going to be that or Ultimate Spider-Man.

Me too. That sounds like exactly the wrong thing to change. Since Spider-Man 2, swinging around New York free to go wherever you please has been the best feature in these games.

So... can we expect X-Men: Shattered Dimensions and Wolverine: Shattered Dimensions? Wolverine: Shattered Dimensions might be good.

Ultimate Spider-Man has already been revealed to be in the game.

Spider-Man games can suck and you'll still have fun with the open world swinging, every time. All my interest in this one just flew out the window.

Frankly zipping around the city like some flamboyant trapeze artist has always been the least appealing aspect of Spider-man. I just want to kick ass.. this game seems to be headed in the right direction.

Most of the bad Spiderman games were the ones that weren't open world.  I always hated when they forced you inside a building for long periods in some of the much earlier games.

HELL YES!!!!!  As someone who grew up with the 90s cartoon Spider-man there's only ONE Spidey voice actor that i know and that's Chris Daniel Barnes!

I don't even care if this game is bad anymore cause it's just become a deffinate "buy" for me.

If I had to guess what the other two dimensions were, I'd say Spider-Man 1602 and Spider-Man 2099.

Yeah me too, although this story still intrigues me. Hopefully one of the Spideys has a bit of a leadership role though because I think it would be wierd if you didn't have a solid protagonist.

It sounds like it will be 2099 and Ultimate.

I think it looks a bit over-stylized myself, but maybe I'll grow to like the comic-y feel the game is going for.

i really liked the swinging mechanics of the spiderman 2 movie game on xbox and ps2. that nailed the feeling of swinging, and the combat wasn't too shabby either. i at least hope they look at that game for some inspiration.

I've never had any interest in playing a Spider-man game. But, this one looks pretty promising. Looks like they took a few cues from

@Ratcabbage:  I agree that traversal is the best part of spiderman games.  But the swinging in web of shadows wasn't that good imo.  The part that bothered me was that the webs didn't stick to anything when you swing, which is too bad because I remember the first ps2 game based from the movies and it had more accurate swinging.  I think it takes away from the game when the swinging is meaningless.  If they don't have proper swinging in this game, it's a big fat deal breaker to me.

The best thing about Halo was the rich color palette. Halo Reach is browning it up.

The best thing about the Spider-man games was being Spider-man in an open world. They've ditched that whole open world thing.

Word is the next Uncharted will have no voice-acting, and Gears of War 3 is going to be a platformer with no guns.

If it's not open world forget it.  I'll scratch my web swinging (I mean wire swinging) itch in Just Cause 2.
Here's an idea, how about a next-gen (this gen) version of Spider-man 2 with improved web swinging,
better graphics, and the option to change into Peter Parker so you can interact with Spidey's huge cast
of friends and acquaintances.  That is what he comics are mostly about.  You could call it, oh I don't
know, how about:  Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-man.

Is that so hard for game developers to figure out??!!!

If this game is fun, all will be forgotten.  I don't think that many Spidey fans are dead set on open world.  How many more times do we really need an open world game in virtual New York anyways?

I'm not so hung up on the open world thing..  I think it gave the games a distinct lack of focus. The later games and Spider-man games have been totally awful, despite having the same huge open world that made SM2 so popular.  I'd rather see them put a bit more focus in the characters/story and actual gameplay..  Like what we saw with Batman Arkham Asylum.

An open world Batman game could be very awesome.. but it would have lost much of what made Arkham Asylum so good.  As long as they keep in some big areas to explore and swing around in, I think this is the right move.

I'd rather they focus on a cool game instead of replicating New York. Spiderman 2 was great but I'll take a linear game with better combat and more varied gameplay any day of the week.

That said, the combat in that video looked kinda lame lol. When is Activision losing this license?

Pre-ordering from Gamespot gets you an exclusive "Cosmic" varient for each of the costumes.

Without being a hardcore fan of the comics, I can't really say which is which, but it would appear the other two are Spider-man 2099 and some form of Symbiote suit.

While I will admit all the Spider-Man games are flawed and I don't buy them until they get  nicely discounted, I do have fun playing them. I look forward to this and will gladly pick it up for $20 after it's been out for six months.

According to the newsrama article on the game, all four spider-men are gonna be voiced by people who have previous been a voice actor to the character.  We already have CDB confirmed, so we can pretty much count in Josh Keaton, hopefully Rino Romano, and then a relatively obscure fourth like Neil Patrick Harris or some such?

Now this is something that makes me feel like there's some good backing for this game.

EDIT: and god willing, no Web of Shadows whining
