There's Something Wrong With My PlayStation 2

That's how it was when I got it, I swear!

People seem to have unreasonably high expectations for the redemption of this post-Obama America we now live in--we'll be catapulted into a new golden economic era powered by Top Chef discussions, racism will get punched in the neck so hard our collective colorblindness will render traffic lights useless, milk will cease going bad, etc.--but it would be perilous for us to lose sight of the fact that, in good times and bad, people are effin' shady. Reminding us of this infallibly consistent truth, Joystiq ran some incredible images taken by an anonymous source who works at one of Sony's distribution centers. What you're looking at here are, ahem, “PlayStation 2 consoles” that people have returned to retailers, who then ship them off to Sony for compensation. Take special note of the sneer quotes in that last sentence, as it should require, I dunno, no more than one eyeball and half a lobe to deduce that the objets d'scam seem below are not, in fact, Genuine Sony PlayStation 2 Computer Entertainment Systems.

I really love the all-wood PlayStation 2, because someone took the care of placing an actual PS2 serial number sticker on the back, as though someone wouldn't be tipped off to the system's questionable authenticity by the fact that it's MADE OF WOOD. And, hey, smaller carbon footprint! The obvious thing here would be to blame overworked, underpaid, and understandably indifferent retail workers for allowing these to slip through, but has anyone considered a grand conspiracy between return-counter clerks and a vast network of DIY consumer electronics counterfeiters? No? Yeah, you're probably right.

The last two I think are just real PS2's, with the added flip top thing you can buy. Mine has one.

That's pathetic... what a bunch of crummy little buggers.  Paint some wood black and put a sticker on it and they think it's better off that way?

Haha...man, that is just classic.  I think this begs the question - which is harder, the wood that the PS2 was carved out of, or the wood the cashier's head accepting the return was made from?

Used my PS2 for years on years, never had any problems. Until I used a Gameshark, which killed my disc drive. Thats what I got for cheating my ass off back then apparently.

Wait, all ps2's aren't made of wood?  I thought that was the entertainment of the system, getting to figure out how to use it.  Games were meant to be played on it?

The "overworked, underpaid, and understandably indifferent retail workers" Jeff refers to may likely be, I suspect,  the ones who currently (don't) work at Circuit City.

I used to be really big into console modding & recognized one of those pics instantly.
The last pic is a fliptop cover mod. Installing this mod allows you to easily swap discs in order to boot  burned copies of  PS2/PS1 games & imports without the need for a modchip. A PS2 software exploit & a homebrew program is used to partially load a legitimate PS disc & then  stop the disc from spinning(the disc stops right after the piracy check is complete). You would then open the fliptop, swap out the original disc for a back-up/pirated disc, close the fliptop & then press a button on your controller. The disc will resume spinning tricking the console into thinking the original (legitimate) disc is still in the drive & BOOM... your pirated and or back-up version of a game boots up.
PS. In no way do I encourage videogame piracy. I'm just passing on some info for those who have never seen a  mod such as this one.

I'm sure he added the sticker to the back because the PS2 box has a small window on the back that exposes the serial number.  Pretty clever and ballsy... and scummy.

In the shady peoples' defense . . . . they did get away with it. So... you can't really argue that the wood with a sticker on it technique didn't work....
