Those Holding Out Hope for an Enslaved Sequel Might Want to Just Go Ahead and Stop Doing That

Ninja Theory makes it known that no sequel is planned, and it's unlikely we'll ever get one.

Video games, she is a harsh mistress, prone to the most fickle flights of fancy and a terrible temper. Which games succeed and fail seem to come about purely on some ethereal whim of which no one can possibly understand. At best, game makers can hope to accidentally catch the mistress in a good mood, or at least find fortune riding the waves of someone else's seemingly accidental popularity.

You're going to want to turn that smile upside down...
You're going to want to turn that smile upside down...

Such waves have oft-eluded UK developer Ninja Theory, who had such high hopes for their PlayStation 3 launch title Heavenly Sword, only to find themselves on the wrong end of profitability when all was said and done. Rather than simply farm themselves out for mercenary work, the studio went to bat again with another original, single-player exclusive adventure in the form of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. With a script penned by 28 Days Later... and Sunshine scribe Alex Garland, and a stellar lead performance from Andy Serkis, the game wowed critics and became a cult success among a small number of extremely ebullient fans.

All of that is wonderful, except for one small detail: hardly anyone bought it.

Perhaps that's a bit of an overstatement, as the title did sell around 730,000 total copies at retail. Those are hardly exceptional numbers, but they aren't the kind of tragicomic numbers a game like Shadows of the Damned did, either. Still, that number was a long way from what Ninja Theory needed, and as a result, the studio has had to abandon any and all hope of putting together a sequel for the title. Speaking to Edge magazine (as transcribed by CVG), studio co-founder Tameem Antoniades lamented the fact that he and his crew weren't working on a follow-up this very second.

"Enslaved should have done better," he told Edge. "Right now we should have been doing a sequel and perfecting that sequel and doing what franchises do, which is get better over time.

"[But] because that didn't happen we've not expanded to two teams like we intended to."

Instead, Ninja Theory is working on Capcom's upcoming Devil May Cry reboot, which, depending on your fondness for Dante and his whole stylish hard action thing, is either great news or a damnable tragedy. Regardless, Antoniades does see this upcoming project as "another chance," and seems quite happy about the work they've put in on it. Still, one can't help but feel a twinge of regret hearing a man explain that the potential of a new, original franchise was stopped dead in its tracks, leaving them to have to pick up someone else's franchise to stay afloat.

Then again, in this economy, work is work, I suppose.

Enslaved doesn't need a sequel.

What it does need a PC port so I can replay it in 1080p without the horrible aliasing and slowdown.

I loved Enslaved. Once of the best games this generation. Didn't care for Heavenly Sword at all though.

I don't think this means we'll never get to see a sequel. Just not soon.

Ninja Theory are fantastic devs. It's a shame that their not getting there props... I was a fan of Heavenly Sword , and Enslaved is a very special game. I'm ok with it not getting a sequel , but I hope there are more games like it... like POP 2008...

that is unfortunate. I liked enslaved well enough, but at the same time, I didn't buy it and help out the company. I thought it was a really good rental game, but not a game I'd really care to own. Shame there's no way to support companies that make games that are super worth renting and fun for one playthrough, but not constantly replayable enough for me to warrant wanting to purchase.

I still haven't beaten it... I got about half way through and then something must have caught my attention. After the flood of holiday games, I may have to finally beat it.

When I played it when it first came out I thought "This feels a lot like this gens Beyond Good and Evil". How right that was. Maybe they'll be teasing us with a sequel in ten years.

As disappointing as that news is I see it as a positive as well; far too often we same games dragged out for sequel upon sequel, it's nice that Enslaved can exist on it's own without having the burden of a better/worse sequel.

Every game dosn´t need a secuel (Darksiders really?) I think is actually refreshing to see a game story with a clear end there´s more than enough secuels already but no enough one-shot games.

I'm really disappointing to hear it. I finally picked it up about a month ago and I loved it. Great story and characters with good fast action, I was really hoping that they would continue with the universe so it's too bad no one bought it.

Totally agree with everyone that Enslaved didn't need a sequel, but if DMC doesn't turn out well, they could go under like other studios. So I really hope for the best because they've proven that they make really good original games.

Thank YOU. Jesus Christ, I smiled ear to ear all the way through POP 2008. My friends hated it just because it wasn't the prince from the previous trilogy. Those bitches.

Shame people don't pay attention to the games that deserve it. Enslaved was incredibly well-written and presented. It sucks that something with so much potential dies because people ignored it.

Even though I knew this would be the case after the early retail figures, I am saddened by a potentially amazing franchise not existing.

I thought Enslaved was a very cool world, but it fell short a little when it came to the combat in my opinion. Would have been nice to see the IP continue, but I think the game itself ended well enough.

Mneh. Enslaved actually caughty my interest quite well, after reading a handful of reviews 'bout it before the release. But then I tried the demo and most of my interest went down the drain. Oh and it was also one of the few games that really started bothering me with bad framerate. I doubt that was improved in the full game.

But like some have said, I'd love to see more 'original' games in general, even if I do love me some sequels as well.

That's a shame. Enslaved was one of my 2010 favorites for sure. Thankfully the game had a decent helping of closure. Fantastic job.

Maybe jerkoffs should just put down the Madden, Call of Duty and/or Generic Zombie Game and pick up something great like this then. It's gotta be like $20 on Amazon right now, and it's excellent and memorable. With fantastic Uncharted-esque action, great fighting and a fantastic story.

Frickin' Xbox kids. All they ever seem to play are military shooters, Madden and Zombie shooters. Buttholes. They're ruining the industry, since so many publishers are only interested in nabbing their money.

Wow. This game ended with such a cliff hanger, and to see that there aren't making a sequel is equally disappointing. This is going down as a Ninja Theory #FML. Oh well. At least they're releasing a kick ass Dmc.

Heaven forbid one of the most unique and interesting games in recent years should get another shot!

Bring on God Of War 4, Bioshock 3, Tony Hawks 1,000,000 and other old shit that should die in it's place.

Edit: And oh yeah, Homefront 2.

I don't think we need another Enslaved just yet. Take a look at Prey 2 garnering all sorts of praise when most were oblivious to it from earlier this generation. More time between sequels, please!!

I really wouldn't call that ending a cliffhanger. It wasn't a clearly defined "hey everything's cool and this is what our heroes are doing now" or "doomy gloomy everyone died" ending but it concluded the journey and character arcs and made its point. that's not a cliffhanger at all!

that said, I loved both heavenly sword and enslaved for their narrative approaches and world design and I'm sad they (as of now) don't get to do more of that. guess I'll have to by my first devil may cry game when DmC comes out :/

The only regret I feel, is that me not buying Enslaved or Heavenly Sword is now resulting in Antoniades screwing up Devil May Cry. Two poor games and now creating what seems to be yet another one, out of a franchise the games of which are on average better than both Enslaved and HS.

1 truly great game: DMC1

1 Good game: DMC3.

1 Mediocre game: DMC4

1 Awful game DMC2

... I don't see the average being that great to be honest. I adored the first DMC, but in terms of setting, level/puzzle design, none of the others ever came close to being as good. Sure, the combat was given massive depth with the third, but I always felt that game got way more love than it really deserved. Probably because it just came off the back of the God-awful second.

Also, FUCK the fourth game. It was a 3/4 hour game which had its length doubled by repeating everything from bosses to levels with a nonsensical story that answered none of the questions it posed. And having Dante as a vastly different playable character did not change things up enough. Frankly, with how badly Capcom treated the next-gen iterations of their best franchises (DMC and RE), I'm happy to see someone else at the helm.

I've played and finished both games. Heavenly Sword justified my PS3 purchase and Enslaved justified the 20 bucks I've paid for it. If anything deserves a sequel, it's Heavenly Sword. Maybe as a PS4 launch title or a late PS3 generation closer.

Don't even start that. The people who only play Madden, CoD, etc aren't the ones complaining they want something new. They don't play games like Enslaved because those games don't interest them. Is that bad? No. If anything, the fault lies with those 'core gamers' (ugh), constantly complaining about the industry, claiming they want something new, claiming they want games like Enslaved, yet when the time comes, they don't shell out for it.

And don't even get me started on the whole publisher thing. Of course they want your money. They're a business.

I bought Enslaved. It was a fun game to watch, but not to play. I also bought Heavenly Sword way back in 2007, and after 5 hours I got to the last boss and gave up in frustration. Haven't touched it since.

They made two games that didn't sell well. They should be happy that Capcom is letting them make DMC.

It didn't seem like Ninja Theory learned any lessons from the faults of their first, so I doubt another Enslaved would have been any better. They should change to downloadable titles that push against the 2GB limit.

What they really should do is become the production end of a better developer, or hire a new gameplay development team.

They may be the best window dressers out there but their games play like they were made ten years ago. Like a Lamborghini with a lawnmower engine. Maybe that's a little harsh, but there is just such a huge gap between their production values and their playability - maybe that makes it feel worse than it is.

I'm really hoping that Capcom has sent some gameplay experts over to Ninja Theory to assist in the development of DMC. They could be a real beast of a developer if they could just figure out that last (and incredibly important) piece of the development puzzle.

I bought Enslaved. But I do understand why people didn't. It does not look very good when you watch the trailers and gameplay footage. It looks clunky and shallow. I bought it because of all the positive reviews, and really enjoyed it. But yeah, I get it.

It's sad to hear because I just recently opened and started playing my copy of enslaved. A very fun and unique game it is. I'm sure with time and refinement it could have been a great, original franchise. Well, only time will tell if they are ever in the position to make it happen. Hopefully DmC gives them that push financially.

That's too bad. I thought the game was fantastic.

On the other hand, I didn't get it until KMart had a deal where I could get a $20 game for free with LA Noire, so I suppose I didn't help.
