THQ Â shot out a short note announcing three new DLC packs for Red Faction: Guerilla , Volition 's surprisingly good open-world get-your-ass-to-Mars game. The first pack will be called Demon of the Badlands and will hit Xbox Live and PlayStation Network on August 13 for $10. There's precious little information on what the pack will contain, though the release does say it "will feature a destructive single-player mission arc that takes place in a new Mars landscape outside of the game's expansive world." First... And nice, I love Red Faction so far. The fact that they're doing DLC packs is awesome, though I hope its more substantial than what Volition also did with its own Saints Row 2, which was really shitty DLC to be honest.
Well it's a good thing for people that own the game... ALways good to know there are some companies that release DLC, hope the support keeps on going for a while like in Burnout Paradise and Fable 2
The PC version will be out in 2 months. I hope they are going to add some of that DLC (depending on when it's going to be ready) to the PC release. The fact that it is a GFW title and that they sure would like to fill up that empty, empty marketplace doesn't make it too likely, though.
edit: And yeah, the delay is unfortunate in the first place...
The prompt price drop to $40 for RFG now makes a lot more sense. I wish more publishers took this approach: make a little less on the front end, get the game into as many hands as possible, then make back the money on DLC. It's a very sensible approach.
The game is a blast to play and it being $20 less makes it a bloody steal. Volition has really yet to disappoint in their games, everything they do is a solid experience and ends up being better than than your initial impressions.
As for the DLC, I'd like to see a bit more about it before passing any judgment. I'll admit that the one point Volition has been spotty is DLC. The Saints' Row DLC was pretty weak and the multiplayer was broken. They seem to have turned it around on multiplayer (RF has a nice MP suite) but I seem to remember the DLC for SR2 was still kind of crappy.

So what exactly is it that determines "okay, this is a done game, so we can ship it without adding this extra content NOW"? What makes "this" a complete game and "that" just extra content? Especially if it's done when the game is done? Or that week or month? I understand if it's extra content a few months later or it's major content (not just some missions and items) like Burnout Paradise. But it's really starting to feel like DLC either falls into the "we could have released this as part of the game, by wanted to fleece another $15 out of you" camp or the "what a bunch of lame shit; this shouldn't have been part of the game and isn't worth being DLC" camp. Rarely does DLC really seem to be magnificent and of any real value. I'd sometimes rather they just focus on the next FULL game rather than trying to ultimately fleece me out of $75, $85, $95 or $100 for "Fallout 3" or something.And no, I'm not whining about the price. Not essentially. Hell, I spend thousands per year just on the actual games alone. It's not a huge deal. I'm just not satisfied with the justification of the value proposition in most of these cases and it always feels so scammy. "

I think it was best explained by Capcom why DLC appears so soon after games: Yes, they were making that content before the game shipped, HOWEVER, the only reason that piece of software was being made, was because it was being made as a standalone (from a financial and development stand point) game. They did not take the original game and chop off limbs in order to make this piece of DLC. It's coming out 2 months after release, not to mention the DLC doesn't even seem like it fits with the main storyline whatsoever. If they were releasing THE HIDDEN WEAPONS FROM BEYOND THE EOS or some stupid thing like that, and were charging 10 dollars, I'd be with you on this, however it seems like you're simply bitching for the sake of bitching, like the majority of people nowadays.

Realistically we only have the developer's "word" for that. And I do believe some dev teams are not above fudging the truth for good PR. I'm willing to accept that the creative director of Biohazard 5 wasn't making competitive multiplayer a priority, but probably everyone else at Capcom believed it was a given. Internal compromise = DLC. External opinion = HAX!
Even if we give developers the benefit of the doubt, and blame the publishers for enforcing chopped DLC (like Vader/Yoda in SCIV), it's safe to say that all parties are feeling out what the whole market and core fanbase will accept. We can probably expect another year or two of these attempts being flung at the wall to see what sticks. Now that "Horse Armor" is a universal phrase to describe "DLC Fail", that didn't stop Bethesda from playing it up when they doubled its price while halving the rest. Bet some people bought it for the irony! Now with Fallout 3, they've got a good system going.
There is a simple solution to all of this. If a game isn't worth $60 to you, don't buy it at that price. If DLC isn't worth $10, don't buy it at that price. Business and Marketing majors don't need to read 200 blog comments to know that cheaper sells more, and all that really matters is voting with our wallets.
I fucking love Red Faction right now. Â If this pack proves to be any good I'll probably end up getting it. Â I'm glad it's new single player content though, the new weapons look awesome.
I rented the game and loved it. Â I plan on buying it but was going to wait, I just spent some money today on a few good used games, maybe I'll go back tomorrow and blow some more cash.
