Want To Know Aboot A Dead Rising Sequel, Eh?

Is there a sequel to Capcom's zombie-shopping-mall romp in development at Vancouver-based Blue Castle? Eurogamer certainly seems to think so.

"Anybody know where to get some good poutine around here?"
Stories all over the place are pointing to this Eurogamer report that all but confirms past rumors about the parentage of a potential Dead Rising sequel. The rumors started earlier this year--and then heated up over the summer--asserting that Canadian dev house Blue Castle is working on the new followup, though the original game was created in-house by Capcom Japan.

Its Eastern pedigree showed, too. Underneath the wild, wholesale zombie slaughter and quirky anything-is-a-weapon combat mechanics, Dead Rising had some truly bizarre design quirks going on in its save model, level-up system, and mission structure. I personally loved the hell out of Dead Rising, but I know plenty of people who couldn't get into it because those elements were just so, well, weird.

So if this is true--and if Eurogamer is stating it without equivocation, it probably is--I'd expect a Western developer with more Western-style design sensibilities, one like The Bigs dev Blue Castle, to marry the strong gameplay and humorous elements of the first game to core game-flow mechanics more familiar to those of us on this side of the pond. Considering Dead Rising's Japan-to-US sales ratio, a Westernized design focus for this sequel is not only unsurprising, it's damn near a requisite.

You'll note that Kotaku has also claimed in the past the sequel may be set in Las Vegas. That sounds excellent to me. Think of how many would-be weapons you could find in all those casinos.

So what do you want out of your Dead Rising sequel? I'm going to go with zombie Siegfried and Roy for a start.

I'll look into it.  Never played the first game, but my friend said it's fun.

As long as Microsoft doesn't buy the exclusivity rights to this one too I'll definitely check it out.

Hopefully they'll improsve a few things from the first title, namely the save system.

They better continue the story from the first one because that cliffhanger ending (the 'real' one) was kind of.....bad?

That game with multiplayer and a less time-sensitive design would be great.  I wouldn't mind if they included a mode that mimicked the old game for a challenge, but that was the only problem with the original that made some pass on it.

Something similar to the old RE Outbreak and Left 4 Dead where you had a stable of characters with unique abilities and strengths that "fleshed" out a team for a solid group.

The original is still a damn good game with nothing else like it.

Absolutely loved the first game, it was the catalyst for me buying a 360 when I did. A sequel would certainly be awesome and I've given a lot of thought to where it should be set. My favorite idea is an island setting, ideally large in scale, say Manhattan or Vancouver Island. Combination of urban and rural areas would be nice. Vegas would be okay, I guess, but I'd really like it to have a radically different setting then the first game and Vegas kind of has an indoor kind of feel just cause its such a bizarre city.

I loved Dead Rising, and I really had no problem at all with the save system or the mission system. I hope they keep it the same way.

A more western approach to the way the save system and all that stuff works might be exactly what's needed to get me to enjoy the sequel, because the first one I really did not enjoy.

As wacky and maybe even effed up as some of those game mechanics were, it was those mechanics that made the game what it was. To change them is to make yet another generic zombie horde game, and we have the mother of all those with Left 4 Dead.

(edit: I'm not making fun of Left 4 Dead in any way. I mean to say it is pretty much the perfect Zombie horde slaying game)

zombie Siegfried and Roy = Zombie Tiger ! (they must do that)

plus, zombies should walk around the Belagio fountain and get stuck in the jets and get shot into the air

as much as i love the first game if they're westernising it, hopefully they'll make the saves more frequent/automatic/available whenever you bloody like!

The game concept is fucking sweet. The game's control scheme suck worse than being trapped on an island with only 50 Cent: Bulletproof to keep you entertained. That, and the ridiculous difficulty of killing some of the psychopaths. If they fixed it up, hell, just give it third person shooter controls, then it could be game of the year.

I personally hope that they don't change much of the gameplay from the first Dead Rising. Sure the save system might have been odd, but with it, survival and choosing between resucing people or just ducking in the HQ until the next mission became so much more... Exciting! If you screwed up, you could screw yourself up so nice that you basically had to restart the game (with your character level and such saved though!). I don't think the photography added much though, it was fun but it could have been executed better and rewarded the player in other ways.

Otherwise, I just love how hardcore the game is, and the fact that you can't save everyone and kill every psychopath (well, maybe that one, if you are skilled and know what to do) makes replaying the game so much more fun.

I just love everything about Dead Rising really, all the flaws and such really add to the game's atmosphere and gameplay. Sure they can tweak it up a notch and all but if there is a Canadian-developed Dead Rising, I hope that they stick true to the formula with day and night cycles, time based objectives and such. Maybe they could make main objectives always accessible though, so you'd get to free roam more without being too penalized.

On a side note, I know Brad was just being funny, but never have I heard one single person say aboot in my 18 years on this earth as a canadian. We do say eh a lot time though, and poutine is fucking awesome.  Just thought I'd let everyone know.

Co-Op would be dope, though because the first game was soo good I wouldn't care if it was the same just little changes.

Just so you know, pretty much every Canadian stereotype you used in this article is really only applicable to Eastern Canada... thankfully.

I think a good Dead Rising sequel would be set in a carnival. Imagine zombie clowns...the ultimate terror!

Dead Rising was original and interesting,  if they just make it into an average survival horror game, they might as well not make it at all.  I have absolutely no desire to have dead rising 2 be just resident evil in a mall (or a casino?),  I hope they rethink this...

If it's developed in Vancouver then the developers will have lots of experience with shambling Zombies. There are hundreds of them that shamble towards you asking for money every time you walk down the street.

I'd say coop would be the best thing to add to the sequel. Just because it would be fun. And hopefully there wouldn;t be any "oops sorry for completely missing the zombie I SHOULD have hit and hitting you in the face with an axe" anymore, with AI's or players. I killed targets a few too many times on accident..

I think creating a sequel for a game by a developer team other than the original one changes everything in the game (and those changes are not always welcome ) . take Silent hill : Homecoming for example , this game was still a silent hill game but it was also different in almost every aspect .

I sorta enjoyed the original dead rising. But that save system was horrible imo. Your telling me I went around gathering 5 people to rescue and then I die because the dumb AI got stuck and I had to go back and kick it to get to move. I died in the process because I was overwhelmed with zombies. Also, the aiming in that game is pretty garbage. Some of you guys might think those weird design choices were what made the game but I disagree.

In my opinion, (and this goes for RE as well) if you need awkward controls and weird save systems to add atmosphere to your game, then you just suck at making games.
