Yep, Nintendo’s Making a Bigger Circle Pad Pro

The upcoming 3DS XL will also get the still-ridiculous add-on.

It will always feel, look, and sound ridiculous to outfit the 3DS with the Circle Pad Pro, even for games like Resident Evil: Revelations, where it legitimately enhances the experience.

Since the 3DS XL will not include a second stick, Andriasang (via Famitsu) reports Nintendo will also issue another stick add-on.

There’s no word on when it will arrive, how much it will cost, and whether it’ll remain in Japan (doubtful), but if you’re worried about upgrading and having that second stick, it’s no longer an issue.

I still do not expect Nintendo to support the Circle Pad Pro outside of how it was handled within Kid Icarus: Uprising, which made the game far easier for left-handed players.

I agree with what Jeff said on the podcast; I'm not interested in the kinds of games which require a second stick being on handhelds.

I'll probably jump aboard the 3DS train with an XL. I have pretty poor eyesight so the bigger screen will definitely be a bit more pleasant to use for me.

Nothing screams handheld like a big ass 3DS surrounded by a huge circle pad pro. Will we also get a new stand for the 3DS XL...? This is so dumb.

Since beating RE: revelations with the circle pad pro I've noticed myself playing my 3ds more and more with the circle pad pro on even if it doesn't work with the 3ds game I'm playing. Must be how it fits better ergonomically in my hand compared to crab fingering my hands which causing cramping in my hands during long periods of play. Wonder if anyone else have had the same issues with the size of the 3ds in their hands. In truth though why not just do an entire redesign and incorporate it.

Because some people believe it will create fragmentation when the CPP can still be bought. Somewhere down the line, that redesign has to be coming and for the 3DS owners who do not have the CPP yet, there will be a game with the hardware pack-in, hopefully.

Dammit. I don't have to care about the 3DS till Fire Emblem arrives, but it seems like it's going to before they release a proper 3DS.

I wonder if it's all some sort of crazy long-term planning. Like they know that holding back that extra stick for the next gen handheld will buy them a few early adopters.

The Circle Pad Pro is crazy and that they're making another, larger one is even crazier but the frankenpad isn't all bad. I actually find it's more comfortable to use, and I've really enjoyed playing RE Revelaytons with it.

I don't really think anyone is "hating" on it so much as being confused as to why Nintendo just didn't add a second stick to the revision. Now you have to go out and buy a secondary accessory that will make your 3DSXL even BIGGER. The fact that they're making a new CPP for the revision obviously indicates that they think a second stick is necessary.
No, it indicates that they felt the need to provide the same level of peripheral support for the XL. Nothing more.

There's nothing wrong with either of these 3DSs. The best games for it do not need another slider. The 3DS does not need to be the PS Vita.

I'm with Jeff on this one. A handheld doesn't need two analog sticks. Just because Vita has one doesn't mean it's needed for handheld games. Who wants to play an FPS or any other deep console style experience on such a small screen?

So they had the idea to make a new DS, yet clearly close to willingly not add another stick and instead sell this thing? Look, I understand the system may not need the stick, but if you're making a revision why not throw it in? I don't understand their logic behind this decision.

I believe that he said that it's not that a handheld doesn't need it, it's that the 3DS made a mistake of not putting one on in the beginning.

And some people may want to play an fps, a tps, or a 3d adventure game on the go. A second stick allows those games to control more comfortably. Adding a second stick allows for a more variety of games while still retaining the unique games that the 3DS offers. The XL could have been a good place to start to putting the second stick on, because of the increased screen size and overall increased form factor. Instead they opted to make it even more bulkier by making it an add-on. They make the consumer pay twice if they want the CPP. This shows that Nintendo has not given up on the second stick and there will still be games that support it. Why not fully support it and just implement it now?

Maybe it'll be similar to how they dealt with the Wii MotionPlus where at first it was just an add-on piece to the standard Wii Remote, but eventually the Wii MotionPlus became built-in on the controller.

See I don't get this at all...and I know it's just Jeff's opinion...I don't mean any disrespect here

But for years, how many gaming websites banged on and on about how the PSP desperately needed a 2nd analog nub??? That's all I used to read at the height of the PSP vs. DS days

Cut forward to today, and now all of a sudden, everyone is okay with one Analog Stick??? Wasn't that what everyone was complaining about for years???

It's not just effective for shooters...I played the Kingdom Hearts 3D demo recently...the first thing I thought was "the camera controls are shit, I want my 2nd analog"...note my disapointment that the demo doesn't support the CCP. I think having a 2nd Analog is vital for any game that uses a 3D camera. This is a big part of the reason I have trouble playing my old Dreamcast games anymore (most notably Jet Set Radio)

For myself, I want the 2nd Analog Nub...not because its going to open up to shooters...but because it just makes any game using a 3D camera all the more better.

I don't really understand what happen? Gamers moaned about the lack of 2nd analog nub on PSP...but now they're more then willing to accept the fact that it isn't there? Hell some gamers are more then willing to accept having no physical controls (the iPad and such)

Personally I'm glad the Vita has it out of the box...I know I may sound a bit fanboyish but after playing my Vita...it was really hard to go back to my 3DS without it (although the CCP did rectify this problem)

I found it impossible to enjoy RE Revelations without it...MGS Snake Eater, well I had 150 hours of Peace Walker under my belt so the control scheme wasn't impossible, but geez the CCP really did make a huge noticeable difference...Kingdom Hearts Demo suffered from lack of 2nd Analog Circle (I'm still looking forward to it, but am so looking forward to playing it with the CCP)...for myself, I want it. I think its vital

Exactly. If Sony could pull it off with the PS Vita, why can't Nintendo do the same with the 3DS XL?

I really don't know if Nintendo knows what they are doing with their hardware at this point. They have done some questionable things in the past and have usually managed to justify themselves down the line ( whad'ya mean 2 sceens!? Who'd want that?) but I'm thinking that that the 3ds should have had time to properly 'ripen' for decent titles by now.

I kinda regret buying one at this point as the only game I've found worth playing on it still is Mario 3d Land.

@danmann861: The problem lies in games that emulate console experiences, but without the 2nd analog stick. I believe Jeff wants games that don't feel hampered by the lack of another analog stick.
