    Overview

Previously known as Microsoft Vancouver as well as Black Tusk Studios, the company is composed of many ex-EA developers. Their original stated goal is to create a new Microsoft-published franchise that will become "the next Halo."

At Microsoft's E3 2013 press event, a brief trailer was shown of an Xbox One game in development at Black Tusk, showing an armed man breaking into a skyscraper in Shanghai, China. However, no title or release date was disclosed, and little would ever be known about the nature of the game.

It was announced in early 2014 that Black Tusk would be the new developers of future titles in the Gears of War franchise, after Microsoft purchased the IP rights from Epic Games. Additionally, series producer Rod Fergusson would join Black Tusk as the studio manager.

On June 3, 2015 the studio was renamed to "The Coalition" in an effort to have the studio's name reflect the property it oversees, similar to how 343 is dedicated to the Halo franchise.
