Not just the best JRPG or SNES game - but simply the best game of all time.
A superb game that is far too commonly overshadow by it's successor, Final Fantasy VII. Released in a time in which the JRPG was a niche genre, Final Fantasy VI managed to make a heart rendering, deep and engaging JRPG which was very successful for it's time and still holds up very well to this very day.
- GAMEPLAY -
It offers nothing new in particular except for the Esper and stat growth system. All the mechanics in general are more reminiscent of Final Fantasy IV as oppose to the entry before it, Final Fantasy V. Next to no changes isn't bad a thing however If it ain't broke don't fix it.
- STORY & CHARACTERS -
The story along with music is where this game really shines. There's no point for me to explain the story, you can read the wiki entries for that. All you have to know is that it's quite possibly the greatest video game story ever told. While the main characters are good, no one can review the game without mentioning Kefka, the villain of Final Fantasy VI. The maniac genius who isn't hell bent on destroying the world because he is some poor tortured soul, a creation of science or corrupted by religion like in other Final Fantasy games. He hates everybody, your party, the townsfolk, his leader and follow soldiers, everybody. He wants them dead for his own pleasure, simple as that.
"I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate you!" - Kefka
- MUSIC-
There's no words that exist that can give this amazing soundtrack the justice it deserves. The Final Fantasy series is known for it's excellent music. Final Fantasy VI arguably has the best soundtrack out of any Final Fantasy game. That, is a statement. Try listening to: 'Aria Di Mezzo Carattere', 'Celes' Theme', 'Terra', 'Dancing Mad', 'Forever Rachel' and 'The Decisive Battle' to get a feel of it. Of course you will have to hear the music at the appropriate time to enjoy the full experience.
In conclusion this game is a must play. For fans of Final Fantasy, JRPGs and RPGs in general, retro and Nintendo gamers. If you were to play any version, I recommend the Super Nintendo version. The PS1 version is great, but unfortunately suffers from some annoying loading time much like other PS1 games. The GBA version has awful music quality. However it does have a revised translation. The Super Nintendo version has no loading, equal great music quality and a wonderful story even if isn't as polished as the GBA's.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
