2015's best new characters
The only criteria is that the character must have been introduced in 2015...
Personally, I'd say:
- Undertale: Alphys, Sans, Papyrus, Undyne, and Flowey.
I don't know if Flowey would count, then. He was in the Undertale demo that came out in 2013. The none of those other characters were in it though (the demo showed from the start of the game up to you leaving the ruins)
Ah...okay, I knew nothing about Undertale until the hype train hit after its release...
@lilman1101: Yup, Quiet is great. The fact that she goes from wanting revenge, suffering for the greater good to sacrificing herself for someone she has all reason in the world to hate pretty much without saying a word is just great writing.
The Bloody Baron is also fantastic for making you both hate and pity him at the same time. He has real, tangible depth and is a great representation of the typical family-busting alcoholic that is all too common in eastern/southeastern Europe.
Lot of good characters this year. Here's a bunch that spring to mind (not really spoilers but in a tag to keep the post size down).
Contradiction: Jenks, Paul Rand
Until Dawn: Emily, Dr. Hill, Josh
Bloodborne: The Doll
The WitcherIII: Bloody Baron, Yennefer (perhaps not "new"?), probably a bunch more
MGS V: D-Dog, Quiet (despite the pervy stuff she is still so good)
Fallout 4: Nick Valentine, Piper
Crypt of the Necrodancer: Shopkeeper (was going to put him in last year but that was during Early Access so I didn't)
WWE Immortals: Daniel Bryan, Lumberjack Big Show, Dark Sorceress Paige
Mortal Kombat X: All the new characters, but I think Cassie Cage or Kotal Kahn takes it
Splatoon: Squid Sisters (I'm counting them as one character)
Mad Max: Chumbucket, Jeet, Pink Eye
Minecraft SM: Petra (provisional as the game's only 2/5ths out, next part is today though I think?)
StarCraft LoTV: Rohara, Alarak, Karax
I guess he doesn't count but special mention to Cayde-6 from Destiny who is pretty much a new character with TTK given that he now talks.
Loaderbot from tales from the borderlands. Orrrrrr gortys AND loadebot as a pair. I love those guys
Or the whole cast (collectively) from Tales From The Borderlands, what a great friendship dynamic they wrote for that game..... Tales From The Borderlands for goty actually
@beachthunder: are you saying a character from a demo of a game doesn't count in qualifications for Best New Character?
Because that's wrong. It's a demo. The Bombcast crew has always used full releases as a gauge for awards
That being said, Flowey from Undertale is my favorite character of 2015
@afabs515: Jenks throwing the devil horns casually when questioning people is possibly my favorite moment of the year.
But Jenks hat should also have a nomination for best inanimate object. (I also seriously appreciate the shower in MGSV just for being there.)
I'm a huge fan of Quiet too. D-dog and D horse are best animals.
Can we have best male and best female character ?
Best inanimate character?
Best animal?
Yeah, I think it has to be the Bloody Baron from Witcher 3. Great writing, great voice acting, and great payoff.
In order:
1.) Jenks - Contradiction
2.) Fiona - Tales from the Borderlands
3.) Singing Shopkeeper - Crypt of the Necrodancer
In order:
- Chloe Price - Life is Strange
- Fiona - Tales from the Borderlands
- Inspector Jenks - Contradiction
Runners up: Evie Frye (AC: Syndicate), Sans and Papryus (Undertale), Emily (Until Dawn)
Max is also great from LiS, but Chloe is the more difficult of the two characters to have pulled off, and they nailed her. It helps that Ashly Burch knocked the role out of the park.
I could swap Jenks and Evie fairly easily. Evie is easily the best protagonist that series has had since Ezio.
I can see Chloe being a very important character for sure. The story gives her a lot of room to be developed. I also like Chloe, I never once found her annoying. Chloe was exasperating in the same way a friend can be exasperating...but you would never leave them.
On topic: Definitely Chloe Price from Life Is Strange. I've known enough broken people that she hit really close to home.
I actually found her plenty annoying, irrational, confrontation, and just plain bitchy at times - but that's what made her such a good character.
I came in to say Fiona and Sasha from Tales from the Borderlands, but I saw Jenks and realized, yeah, that's my vote too. Still, the whole cast of characters from Tales deserves some kind of special mention.
I know we're sort of down on the Witcher 3 around here, but Gaunter O'Dimm from the Hearts of Stone expansion was handled really well. I was kind of blown away at the interactions you have with him by the end.
Ryan Rand spilling his drink is still the character moment of the year for me. Contradiction is so good.
This, except switch Jenks and Fiona. Love Jenks and the camp that is Contradiction, but the character development and voice acting behind Chloe are truly exceptional.
In order:
- Chloe Price - Life is Strange
- Fiona - Tales from the Borderlands
- Inspector Jenks - Contradiction
I'm casting my vote for Emily as well. It's delicious to love a character that so many other people dislike.
Jenks is the obvious vote, and as much as I would personally pick Undyne from Undertale, Papyrus is the clear runaway favorite of people who played the game.
(And I already picked 3 but I absolutely love Chloe too.)
@lilman1101: Yup, Quiet is great. The fact that she goes from wanting revenge, suffering for the greater good to sacrificing herself for someone she has all reason in the world to hate pretty much without saying a word is just great writing.

I'm not sure you can use sarcasm and then present a legitimate example. It's just confusing. Is the "Quiet is great" bit sarcasm? because I'll feel like a dick if it isn't.
Also on the other MGSV characters mentioned (huge spoilers for MGSV) : I'm not sure Medic counts as a character considering he's you and it's also funny that people mention D-Dog when the marketing for D-dog, his dog parents got shot, is used to set up a twist that he isn't a character at all and is just a random dog you train to be your mascot because your fucking desperate. I mean I get that they mean D-Dog in the emergent gameplay follow me around and be cool buddies sense and not because a wolf has some deep character arc but the whole point of D-Dog is to subvert this concept. D-Horse is eternal though.
Anyway clear answer is any character from Contradiction.
Ryan Rand spilling his drink is still the character moment of the year for me. Contradiction is so good.
Oh man, Just when I thought they couldn't get any campier with that game, he goes and does that lol
It's gotta be Witcher 3's Bloody Baron, though as others have said, Gaunter O'Dimm seems pretty great too (haven't finished Hearts of Stone yet, but I imagine the ending'll be great)
@sparky_buzzsaw: It would have to be a special mention since those characters were introduced in episode 1 that came out in 2014 ;) Had pretty much the same idea when I came into this thread too, though. I was worried Telltale wouldn't be able to pull off a good wrap-up for all those characters (based on their previous track record) but man, they blew it out of the water with that stuff.
Dude.
That wolf has an eye patch.
Dropsy - Dropsy
Josh - Until Dawn
The Analist - Until Dawn
Toriel - Undertale
"They" - Her Story
Maybe Chloe from Life Is Strange.
Emily - Until Dawn
Gortys - Tales from the Borderlands
Favorite line of dialogue:
B.J. Blazkowicz - Wolfenstein: The Old Blood - "Killed your fucking dog, Rudi."
Iris von Everec, from Scenes from a Marriage quest in Heart of Stone, made a very strong impression on me. For a secondary character in a side storyline, she is exceptionally written, not to mention extremely relatable.
The Rabbit from Nintendo Badge Arcade. Not sure about the US one, but the EU one is pretty great.
Undertale - Everyone
Contradictions - Again, Everyone.
Starcraft 2 - Alarak. That's some good John De Lancie stuff right there.
Brad knows what's up: http://bwadshoemaker.tumblr.com/post/128604097655/d-dog-for-best-new-character
The Bloody Baron is an incredible character and for better reasons than you'd normally see from video game characters. That dude seemed like a real awful piece of shit that I really got to know in the end and that's great.
On the more typical side of things I think Chumbucket is a really fun character.
