I started watching the kerbal quicklook and all of a sudden an ad for tampons played...
Is that giantbomb's target audience? Or did I have a drug free acid trip?

Well my point was it wasn't videogame related at all. I remember Jeff saying that they were going to control the ads on the site. Where as the ad looked more like it was place by an automatic ad deal/agency.
I suppose if it makes money. Was strange still.

Yes, we're part of the target audience even if we might be in the minority.

Females playing video games is not as uncommon as you think.
Maybe the OP thinks that female gamers don't use tampons.

Statistics on this site suggest that female targeted advertising would be a dismal, useless failure.
That's no longer the case now that they're at CBSi. They have an ad team that handles everything without input from them. Somebody asked and he confirmed after that HTC EVO site skin.Well my point was it wasn't videogame related at all. I remember Jeff saying that they were going to control the ads on the site. I wonder how psyched female gamers are to see tampon ads.
I wouldn't imagine the hype level being very high, maybe close to zero.
I hate all advertising equally, so I don't understand the problem. I don't want any of the garbage the advertising industry sells me, so for all I care, they can ads for diapers and stool softeners. I will ignore them all with equal disdain.

Yeah, especially if they don't use them. ;)
Reading some of the stuff written on these forums, I'm not so sure it's just females that need them.

Giant Bomb has zero control of the ads put on the site.
Shhh. Don't try and fight it. Who knows what would happen if people on the forums didn't have a new thing to be outraged about every week or so.
I have ads for the Marines (and occasionally some spammy looking shit for Amazon gift certificates) showing on the site at the moment.
Yeah, that's fucking well targeted when I live in New Zealand.
The Ads that go up on the site are just something that the GB team have no control over. I can't wait to see what they lose control of next month.

How long before Jeff gets fired from CBSi again and we start the process all over again?
Actually I think the couple of years that Jeff and Co. spend trying to get people to buy adverts (and failing) will have softened his stance against site skins etc. Unless someone from marketing tries to influence editorial again, I suspect he has learn to grin and bare it.
To put it crudely. He agreed to this arranged marriage and as a result has to learn to take it occasionally (xmas, birthdays, etc) in return for the promise of an easy life.
@Jrinswand: That's not saying that we could totally change that, though. I'm all for bringing more women to the site, or heck, even a female staff member.
As for ads, I have mixed feelings about them. Yes they're annoying, and yes, unfortunately we live in a world where they need to exist, otherwise nobody'd sell anything. I don't think they actually ever cater anything to specific regions or keep tabs on what's relevant to each person, though.
Be thankful it's not like Tested where they advertise magic facial slime for women who are either dead or near death. At least tampon ads target an age group that might benefit from them.
What does that have to do with an ad, though?I should mention that soldiers have used tampons to save peoples lives before... just by clogging bullet wounds to save their asses from bleeding to death until they get to the medic then to a doctor to fully heal them.
Just saying is all.

SOLDIERS NEED TAMPONS! Of course!
