Metacritic and gamerankings doesn't lie. I don't know what ppl see in halo games I really don't as a pc gamer, halo is just another shooter with a multiplayer. Maybe it works better with a controller and at the time on consoles, it was good and new. The pc version has a lower score btw, the real score, metacritic and gamerankings doesn't lie.
I'm probally going to get alot of replies, however the score speaks for itself, the pc version's score is more of a reflective opinion of how overated it is. Also I just bought that game a few years ago, I didn't play it when everyone else did, I didn't have a xbox and I didn't like the series. It doesn't hold up anymore for it's gameplay, it's probally more of a nostalgia thing for ppl.
Halo was pretty revolutionary. It standardized fpc controls as we know them today. Recharging health, only being able to carry 2 weapons at once, dedicated grenade and melee buttons etc. are all standard fps conventions now and halo was the first game to incorporate them all into one game seamlessly. I dont know why people never acknowledge this.
edit: it had some pretty crappy level design at times, though. no one will deny that.
edit 2: and the lower reviews for PC probably had more to do with the fact that it was a 2 year old game at that point.
Ofc, had the best graphic for its time, best A.I in a fps, and excellent vehicle combat and supported co-op through the singleplayer and the story was top-notch.

But, then FF7 and MGS1 is overrated also. Some games worked better on console. Halo isnt CS, the elites has shields and takes like 50-60 bullets? the aiming and the whole feel of the game with vehicles etc just feel more suited for a controller and rumble pack. I dont know, but the whole idea of playing a jrpg on a 17-inch(which most had in year 97 or 98) and play ff7? with a keyboard? it just doesnt make any sense...

As much as I hate to do this because it will make be sound like a PC elitist, but the word "console" should have been placed between 'future' and 'FPS'

The difference there being that Tony Hawk Ride is sitting at a 45 on Metacritic. The high reviews it did get, were obviously under heavy influence of Activision.
There's no evidence, or reason to believe this was the case with the original Halo. And even if it were.. EVERY single review in this case would have had to be biased / payed off by MS. Also, if you think Halo wasn't highly innovative and for some reason doesn't deserve it's score, then I have to say you are completely ignorant, probably a fanboy of some description and will have lost all credibility as a gamer.

a better question would be "Does Halo CE deserve a high score?" because a 98 on metacritic means that almost all reviews were very high. And Halo CE does deserve a high score so Halo CE does deserve whatever high score metacritic shows.

You basically said how you never played it in its original form, yet call it overrated. When Halo came out it was revolutionary for console shooters and changed the genre dramatically.

Not only did the PC version come out a lot later, but it was a bad port. Changing core gameplay parts, messing with the multiplayer balance and suffering from many glitches and technical issues.
Of course if you're comparing it to games of today, it's not going to hold up quite so well, but for the time it was amazing. Similarly, you could go and play Goldeneye 64, and call that overrated. By todays standard it's horrible. Bad graphics, poor control, bad frame rate, etc.. It's aged very badly. But it still deserves its place on the pedastal, back in the day it was one of the best multiplayer gaming experiences around.
Not really but i don't not like the game i just didn't think the game is as good as people make out. Im not a big fan of FPS game though so my answer is kind of irrelevant.
Sure, since we're talking about it's 2001 reviews or are you trying to base the score off today's games? You want to judge Deus Ex or System Shock 2 by today's expectations next?
I've grown a fair passion for hating Bungie, but back in 2001 Halo revolutionized FPS's and they would probably not be the same today if it wasn't for that game.
Halo CE and all the other games deserved the scores they get. Its one of the only game series where reviewers open their eyes and review properly. The complains made my reviewers are for the most part sound when it comes to the Halo series.
What's up with all those Does X game deserve Y% overall rating on Metacritic.com? It should stop. It was fine the first time, now it just feels like spam.
