Am I the only one who thinks The Last Of Us is the clear winner so far? I felt the story was just so well told with clever and smart dialogue to make a great cinematic experience. Also I for one really liked its gameplay it reminded me what survival horror should be and how it can make one feel tension unlike any genre in games can.
game of the year?
It's likely BioShock Infinite, Last of Us, or GTA V.
There could be a surprise incoming, but that's where the smart money is right now. Still 4 months to go.
@naru_joe93: Yes they'll choose Last of Us over Bioshock when only 2 of them have played it....you're gonna lose out on this bet buddy, especially since you don't even mention Saint's Row 4....
My GOTY would probably have to be either Saints Row 4 or Civ 5: BNW, even though it's more an expansion. This year has been quite a letdown for games, at least the ones I've played. Bioshock was shit, TLoU was shit, Tomb Raider was only OK, every other AAA game released this year was only OK. I want to say GTA5, but since I'm getting it on PC, it probably won't be out till next year, so I'm not counting that.
One of these: Rogue Legacy, Warframe, Planetside 2, or Gone Home.
While I certainly enjoyed it, I think there are enough valid complaints about Bioshock Infinite where I wouldn't put it as my #1 GOTY.
Well this years releases I've played so far are:
Last of Us, Tomb Raider, Dust (PC), Bioshock, Rogue Legacy, Blood Dragon, Metro Last Light, Ni No Kuni, Gunpoint.... more or less in that order for now.
What I'm expecting to play the rest of the year is:
Saints Row IV, Splinter Cell, Pokemon X/Y, Papers Please, Animal Crossing, Rayman, Dead Space 3 and maybe a few others. No GTA because no pc version this year... So yeah I'm really looking forward to last few months of the year!
@shaunage: you have to finish infinite in order to get the full experience! And the last of us in my opinion had a very interesting ending.
Between Bioshock Infinite, The Last of Us, Fire Emblem Awakening, Ni No Kuni and the rest of the awesome games yet to come out, I honestly don't have a clue what my GOTY will be.
This year has been incredibly dull, and being a PC gamer I won't play GTAV til 2014, so I don't think I will have a GOTY this year.
Next year it's Witcher 3 vs. GTAV for me.
@somberowl: I still want to finish Ni No Kuni
The Last of Us / Bioshock Infinite ? I need to play GTA 5 before i know my GOTY 2013.
I have a feeling that GTA 5 will be my GOTY this year. Rockstar never let me down.
Lego: Batm... Sleeping D... shit... TeamFortre... Dark Sou... Terra... Sky...
...Don't Starve?
It was probably Just Cause 2. Again. I don't deserve to discuss videogames anymore :(
Well it's hard for me to believe but as far as games I've played up till now I'm gonna have to say Tomb Raider for being such a fun game. Bioshock Infinite was great but fending off waves of enemies poring into an arena got tiresome and The Last of Us didn't have the game play match its awesome characters and setting. As far as the game that will most likely be my GotY it will be GTA V, no game has me more psyched than it.
I think my Top 5 will end up being:
1: BioShock Infinite
2: Grand Theft Auto 5
3: The Last of Us
4: Saint's Row IV
5: DmC Devil May Cry
EDIT: Giant Bomb's game of the year will obviously be Brothers though.
Fire Emblem Awakening, because of course it is.
As someone who had only played a bit of Shadow Dragon beforehand and who had never played much of any turn-based strategy game, I also say Fire Emblem Awakening so far.
When thinking of what else I want to put on my top five thus far, I don't know if I'd call them top five material. Bioshock Infinite's gameplay is decent but not great. Tomb Raider's gameplay is fun but its story is decent but not great. SMT IV is almost definitely on there but it's not doing what Nocturne did for me (seriously, Nocturne was fucking great).
But then, I haven't played The Last of Us or Devil May Cry yet. And of course the year is not over yet, and the biggest season for gaming is coming.
Released this year or played this year?
I'm sure OP meant released
I haven't really played a lot of 2013 releases so far...
Out of what I have played though from this year...Tomb Raider and The Last of Us are definitely up there for me.
I thought I'd come back to this thread now that I've played enough of GTA V to know how I feel about it. In short, I think I was expecting too much. The Last of Us is still my favourite game of the year so far.
Though, the following games I'd still like to play before the end of the year, so of course The Last of Us might be knocked off the pedestal.
- Hitman HD Collection
- Crysis 3
- Slender: The Arrival
- Injustice: Gods Among Us
- Don't Starve
- Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
- Metro: Last Light
- Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
- Rayman Legends
- Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
- Puppeteer
- Rain
- Beyond: Two Souls
- Lego Marvel Super Heroes
- Batman: Arkham Origins
(I'm not getting a PS4 at launch, thus several of the next-gen games will have to wait 'till next year)
What I have played this year, ranked.
- GTA V
- BioShock Infinite
- Rayman Legends
- The Last of US
- Proteus
- Kentucky Route Zero
- Guacamelee!
- Gunpoint
- Starseed Pilgrim
- Divekick
- Antichamber
- Saints Row IV
- Don't Starve
- Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
- Reus
- Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
- Tomb Raider
- Metro: Last Light
- The Cave
- The Bridge
So far I have liked all of what I have played. No really big regrets or bummers. There's still a lot of stuff I need to play. DMC and Remember Me being two big ones. And of course some stuff is not out yet, but beside Watch dogs, nothing really seems that interesting.
There's a lot of PC stuff on that list, all of it indie. I guess that was to be expected in the last year of the console gen. But still,it surprised me, as someone who plays everything on consoles, and barley own a computer.
The list of games I like throughout the year, not in particular order:
- The Last of Us
- BioShock Infinite
- Saints Row IV
- Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
- Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
- Puppeteer
- JoJo's Bizarre Adventure All Star Battle
- Dragon's Crown
- DmC: Devil May Cry
Or maybe in that order, I'm not too sure.
Oh, hey, look, I still agree with me. Except for the SMT IV part. Every time I think about it my opinion just sinks lower and lower. Those last few hours had absolutely nothing to do with the first 30. Tomb Raider, on the other hand, is definitely on there. I've been playing that again and its gameplay holds up so well that even if its story wasn't competent at all, it would still be on there.
Last of Us, Infinite, Tomb Raider, GTA V, Saints Row IV & we shall see about next Gen.
I really liked Mario & Luigi Dream team as well, but that will be on exactly nobody's list prob. I haven't played brothers but ppl are dick hard for that. game. So that will be on everyone's list prob.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, I played through the latter half of normal and a full hard playthrough in a day and there wasn't a dull moment. The Last of Us, GTA5, FE: Awakening and hopefully Disgaea D2 as runner-ups.
I honestly think DmC is going to end up being the best game I finished this year that came out this year; I really liked Tomb Raider and Saints Row 4 but DmC was the game that really surprised me. I haven't finished Last of Us and I have no idea why, got about halfway in and had to stop for the night and never had the urge to go back to it.
Bioshock Infinite
I mean, I could be swayed real easy to go Saint's Row again but it will probably be Infinite.
Call of Duty is GOTY every year.
If you want a game I've played so far, it's a tie between Madden 25 and FIFA 14, but Call of Duty will always be the most enjoyable game of any given year. I'd say Diablo III on 360 would come in right behind those.
Right now I feel like the 2 strongest contenders are Bioshock Infinite and The Last Of Us. Below that I reckon Heart of the Swarm, Divekick and Saints Row IV get shuffled up however. Possibly Watchdogs gets in there. Tier below that is Rayman Legends, Rogue Legacy and Gone Home. After that Ridiculous Fishing and Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon fight tor #10 assuming Watchdogs gets onto the list.
This year is like every year recently. There are more than 10 games I feel strongly need to make a top 10. It's difficult and even the #10 game will be a hot banger of a game.
I can't narrow it down yet but the contenders are:
DMC: Devil May Cry
Bioshock Infinite
Gone Home
GTAV
Fire Emblem: Awakening
