IGN Layoffs (and why GB is fine as a small team)

So aparently IGN is going to be laying off some employees across all of the IGN divisions, so says Joystiq:

Maybe this will remind some of the people that keep saying that X or Y person should join Giantbomb that times are STILL tough, so maintaining a small team is still key. Best of luck to anyone that loses their IGN job tho

What's with the emphasis on men? I realize that the majority of gamers have a penis, but there's something weird in placing penile advertising as your priority.

I mean, if this memo reached your desk just moments before you (or a close friend) were laid off, you probably wouldn't have much regard for the "hush-hush" from the higher-ups either. "

By the sounds of it the exact list of who was getting fired was still available to change so they couldn't simply give it out for fear it would affect their chances of keeping their job, afterwards they would probably be afraid of losing any sort of layoff money (theres a terms for it but ive forgotten it) or references. Then again being pissed is a strong motivator....

Either way the statement is funny as hell given where I read it lol

Though its obviously bad for the people fired, and by the looks of chris ropers twitter it came as a shock and hes scrambling for a job of some kind.

I haven't followed IGN for awhile, but isn't Chris Roper the most senior member of their Playstation team?  Why would he be the first to go?

I hope they get rid of matt casamassina, I can't stand him, yet I have nothing against him. I also hope they keep jessica chobot, she's great.  
 
I also read in another thread, they got rid of chris roper, I don't like him either.

Roper was one of the few parts of IGN that did not solely appeal to twelve year old boys. He will be missed.

GB is great and all, but man are they slow at getting reviews out. It's probably because there's only 3 guys to write reviews, previews, news and all the other random stuff that goes up. One more guy wouldn't hurt.

I am, he and drew are video guys. Occasionally they will write a review, but other than that most the content is written by the other 3. "

Oh well we have 'Weekend Confirmed' coming from Garnett Lee and Feedback on G4 might be getting an audio form again soon if they have any sense.

Andy Eddy, the dude who ran TeamXbox, has also been fired.  Greg Miller commented on the IGN boards that he is still there.
 
Judging by the two confirmed layoffs, it looks like IGN is cutting from the top and letting the newer people move up the ranks (with lower salary raises, obviously).
 
Whatever you feelings are about IGN, anyone getting laid off sucks.  People who actually work would know this and be sympathetic.

You know why they got rid of the people you actually liked at IGN?  Because, they've been there for a while, and they're bring down the largest salaries.  That's pretty much the answer to why people like James Mielke, Shane Bettenhausen, Matt Chandronait, and so many other 1UP favorites were the ones out the door when the Ziff-to-UGO lay-offs occurred.

I wonder if this includes Gamespy (which is part of the IGN monolith) because Anthony Gallegos and Ryan Scott just got jobs there after being fired from 1UP last year.
