I'm confident that I will hold the record for Whiskey Media’s shortest internship. Ryan found out I peed in his coffee. My first day was Friday, July 2. Due to the weekend being dedicated to America’s birthday, we had a four-day weekend. I feel like I worked hard for my internship. Unfortunately, Friday was probably the worst first day of work I have ever had. I got to the office around 8:45am. After getting my desk prepared for the day, I received a call to go on a mission in Afghanistan. I had to be home by July 13. I didn’t tell anyone immediately, plans in the Army change every hour. Next Wednesday came with no new information for me; it was time to tell the staff that this would be my last week.
The Whiskey Media staff couldn't be more supportive about my leave. At first, I feared they would down on me for leaving so soon. Tested’s Will Smith was helping me in finding out proper ways to care for my electronics in the harsh Afghanistan environment. Comic Vine’s Sara Lima was especially sweet, giving me heartwarming words of encouragement and imploring me that I’m welcomed back at the company whenever I can come back.
I want to deploy and do my part, it’s what I singed up for, but my mission came at the worst possible time. A sister Infantry Brigade Combat Team needed a few more Scouts to accomplish their mission. A year ago, I knew the internship was a possibility, and I wanted to go on this mission. I decided to kill two birds with one stone. I made a deal with my chain of command that I would do extra duty and volunteer for the deployment to get the leave time Whiskey Media would demand.
For general tips to aspiring interns here's what I have for you:
-Have English skills.
-Have a real reason for wanting the internship.
-Don't show up to your interview looking like shit.
-Be prepared to prove you know about stuff without looking like a creepy nerd. I was asked about the last movie I saw (I'm thinking Babylonian didn't get asked that). Jeff asked what my favorite game of 2011 was and why.
-Understand you won't be doing quicklooks, writing reviews, and most likely not appearing on any Whiskey Media podcast other than Internal Affairs.
-Don't be camera shy.
-Understand it's like any other job. You must be able to contribute to the office atmosphere positively while also being very productive and being another gear running the Whiskey Machine.
-Don't have anything else on your agenda like war.

Which wasn't nearly as terrible as it sounds. They provided enough hangout space for me to work on my Mac and the last day they had free Ice Cream. Hostel's tend to be a common ground of foreign travelers. I met a lot of nice European ladies. I now understand why Germany and Italy are popular choices for Army duty stations. For a week, I got to stay for only $150. Not too shabby.
