Too many shooters

Have you noticed how many of the games that got well received by reviewers last year were shooters?

Nobody said you had to play them.

It is a very popular genre that many people enjoy. If you have a successful game, it will probably bring in a good amount of money, so that is why there are "too many shooters."

Besides, you don't have to play them.

it's because shooters are online play's favourite choice by excellence. and plus they are flashy and plus guns>swords

grrr how dare they make great shooters(!) amirite marines?

It's a pretty easy genre to work in. The controls have been honed so well they're practically instinctive. Right trigger shoots, left trigger iron-sight, left stick movement, right stick looking, A jump... etc. There are variations, but for the most part the controls are near perfection for console FPS'. The genre is also easiest to immerse the player in.

My problem is that there are being made great shooters all the time. But we need more quality games that are not shooters!"

Get over it dude really..look at this fall and upcoming things, between Prince of Persia, Fable , fallout(yes you can still play in first person and shoot, but its a RPG before a shooter) there are definitely other options, but complaining about this isn't gonna change anything..as I listed and some others(racing games, even ones on just downloadable services) are still options...its not all shooters...also Mass Effect was an RPG before it was a shooter,especially if you picked classes other than a soldier or vanguard. Thats last year though and it isn't all shooters this year.

I think there are a little to many shooters coming out these days. Thankfully there are still games like Super Mario Galaxy and Little Big Planet coming out.

I disagree that there are too many shooters on todays market, I think it's good that developers are being given the chance to bring the full potential to shooter games. I understand that perhaps with shooters of such quality being talked about so much it might seem a little daunting to a non-shooter fan but as you say there are many other games out there.

I love the FPS genre but I have to agree that there are far too many FPS games coming out now. The FPS genre has a lot of mainstream appeal so it's no surprise developers are making so many of them.

I consider Mass Effect more of an RPG with guns type game...it's focus definitely isn't on the shooter elements. :)

Need more RPGS if you ask me, but I still love shooters.

Needs more platformers, otherwise, it's alright.

That might just be what's popular right now.  A few decades ago, every other game was a platformer. Then it was fighting games.  Years from now people will be complaining about another genre.

Really, as long as it's a good game, keep bringin on the shooters!

You know, going back and playing Deus Ex, I realise that the problem isn't the quantity of shooters on the market, it's the quality.

Twilight complaining about something that isn't on the Wii? Both original and shocking.

I would say that there are too many shooters in general, but RPGs that have active combat are more immersive than RPGs without it. The more RPGs that are shooters, or action oriented like The Elder Scrolls series the merrier.

Thats an interesting list since all those FPS you named are actually quite different.

Halo 3 is more of the same (not that is a bad thing mind you)
COD4 had the rank up system
Mass efffect was more of a RPG than a shooter
Bioshock had no multiplayer at all so its single story campaign had to be really good.
OrangeBox was 5 games in one.

I would see your argument if they all played similarly, but these five shooters are actually quite different, and its that difference that makes them great."
